Some folks 'buy the dream' and then 'sell the reality'.

We sold our live aboard in may last year to a couple going CC ing. After doing BSC and blacking it was up for sale offers above £6000 less than they paid us. Big hit for them after just a few months ownership. Broker did them no favours with the listing as well so much he could have said to up the price like, new drive plate new engine mounts just overhauled travel pack alt. Service just done new pumps etc etc none of that listed. Felt sorry for them dream turned nightmare.

That's a great deal cheaper than most householders would have to pay as a call-out fee for their local plumber, sparky, locksmith etc

I had to get change a door lock on a car dealership on Park Lane which was owned by a friend who had gone to Germany for Christmas.  It’s was Christmas Eve and a Saturday afternoon £30  Chubb lock cost me a eye watering £700! However the day before he sacked a employee who still had a key and there was a car with a list price of 7 figures plus inside so £700 seemed cheap to protect this asset. Lock man very happy with his Christmas bonus!

The tank sizes are in the boats documentation and also the sizes and I have checked the volume using the sizes with an online calculator

I havnt dipped the tank as I dont think theres a straight drop into the tank

Theres are fuel cocks on each tank plus a drain valve

I will check the breather outlets when the weather improves slightly

I would imagine that the gauge would in reality only read from one tank and would  assume that both are level

If the tank is square measure the W. L. H multiplying three sides and find total cubic cm divide by 1000 that will give you the amount in ltr ie 1000 Cubic cm = 1 ltr

An alternative fact, made up by snowflake boating newbies.

Agree I had to move when water frozen “couldn’t wait it out” as needed services and as a cc moving when water frozen fact of life. Mind you extra slow past plastic and wooden boats.
also EXTRA care when getting on or off and round locks.
Another point if you do go in stand up and take off heavy coat and woolly stuff as they are heavy then it’s a bit easier to climb out then into a warm shower fully dressed and strip off in the shower. Came to this idea the hard way lol not dead winter but water was cold that was for sure.

Hello fellow boaters.  A friend of mine is having difficulty with his Bubble diesel stove and cannot find a specialist in the North West to come and service it.

Have any forum members got any recommendations?  Thanks in advance.

Weld some chain to it and use it as a mud weight. Mine went in the bin changed it for a solid fuel stove had no end of problems with the bubble.

  6. It’s under offer but the couple we sold it to never used her. However the broker I think did them no favours in the listing many things we did new were not mentioned at all. Also how to run things the people we sold her to would not know in the time they had her they only moved from market Harbrough to Peterborough.
My wife and I miss the boat life but I had a major operation in March and the issue could come back so we sold up and returned to our home which is in Goa and Calcutta India as my half Irish half German wife was born in India, heady mix I know but it allows us to live here visa free as a local as it were.

    They ARE better, loads better.

It's what happens when lawyers start getting involved in building work.

Where in the BSS do you think it says twin wall flues are mandatory?

I was told when our stove was replaced  to take out and refit same stove old flue is good to go however replace with a new replacement stove has to conform to new standard ie double skin flue

Hello all. Hope everyone good and well (whoever reads this).

Does anyone know of a good installer of boat log burners in the North West (I'm in Manchester)? I don't know if there's specialist boat installers or if you can go to a normal house installer. Any recommendations appreciated. 😃

We had one done at kings lock on the t&m very happy with it. Diesel bubble came out solid fuel fuel went in.

  9. Save on metal to practice with on the mill by using a block of expanded polystyrene. This is what people like airbus do when using a new program on a cnc machine run the program then coat in body filler machine again then measure it tweak the program as required and repeat until it’s correct. So practice machining a perfect square etc then you will soon get the hang of it before machining a v8 block engine for your boat lol

  10. Sorry to say we are no longer CCer’s we have sold the boat and returned home to Goa India as my half German half Irish wife was born in Assam India so we have the right to live here so happy days but no boat! Only been back two weeks but do miss the boat life. Major surgery drove the move as I was not sure about being on the cut in a isolated spot and needing ambulance again. Lucky last time we were moored at Market Harbrough.
So all the best to you all and happy boating.

I don't personally 'wish' either way as I enjoy moving about all year around within the current rules.

However, perhaps in the future when I become less mobile I may have to consider moving back on land. For me, living on a boat in a marina or other fixed canalside location doesn't seem that appealing at the moment.

Us to a “T”. Because of emergency operation and follow up stuck in market harbrough since early March. Spoke with licensing officer he had no issues at all because he could see by our cruising record we were not in his words “piss takers”.  I get fed up seeing the same boats in the same location year in year out. One outside Debdale marina comes to mind always between debdale and around foxton locks.

Hello, hopefully this is the correct place for help. trying to find on site facilities to move a 57 ft narrowboat from lorry into canal. Is there a list of boatyards/marinas which have on site cranes to lift from lorry onto canal? Are local knowledge if no list, looking for one close to Staffordshire (so Trent and Mersey or Staffs and Worcester or Coventry Canals in first instance)

    Thank you

Debdale just north of foxton locks

There are currently two active threads on here which both involve new members looking for advice on their first boats which they plan to have built.  In both cases the boats they describe are likely to give them some issues.

It seems that both new members have had their ideas sparked by watching boating channels on youtube.  These channels tend to portray a world of idyllic loveliness which inevitably makes their viewers want to join in.

I'm not surprised by this, since it's the way youtube works.  Content creators get paid from the adverts which appear before and during their videos, and the more people who view, the more they get paid.  So it makes perfect sense for their content to lean towards making the canals look perfectly lovely and focus only on the positives, minimising the negatives.  This is because the majority of viewers are non-boaters who enjoy pretty and relaxing videos of narrowboats chugging along next to flowery hedgerows and under interesting old bridges.  I get it, I really do.  I'd rather watch a video like that, rather than a realistic portrayal of narrowboat life.

But the upshot of this is that more and more people are getting a skewed idea of what boat life is actually like.  A friend came boating with me last weekend because she's thinking of getting a boat.  Why?  Because she's been avidly watching youtube videos and sucking up all the loveliness...

Broadcast TV shows don't have quite the same impact it seems because they're just short series.  But these youtube channels put out new content every week, drawing their viewers further and further into their world.

I don't know what the answer is, but I do blame youtube for encouraging many new boaters onto the cut when they have a very innaccurate idea of what's in store.

Please send my way as our boat will be for sale soon as to me at time writing this recovering in hospital after 2 nd blocked/ twisted bowl operation. I’ve just had 9 days with NO food and lost 7kgs in weight. Plan is sell boat and return to our home Goa India. Maybe straining to open stuck gates/bridges not doing me any favours

So Penton Hook lock is closed, which means Chris can't get down our way for another couple of weeks. Any ideas? We don't need a lot, just enough to keep our heater going until Chris can get through, so I guess maybe a trip to the local petrol station with a jerry can, but I'm not in love with the current diesel prices at the pump!

Penton hook marina just below the lock mega bucks to buy but may do

I don't see the problem, the stuff got re-cycled, just not by the LA, but by a third party.

I've been stuck on the boat for four weeks, and had to conserve all my waste,  two very large plastic log sacks.

Far too much packaging, but that is inevitable unless we go back to 1960s when you went to the grocer and he cut butter off  a block, cheese from a large cheese and filled your own bottle with sherry from a barrel. The wrapping was greaseproof paper, no plastic film.

I don't think there is any way of stopping the use of plastics, everything is dependant on plastic film, bottles, containers. Even waxed paper drinks cartons have plastic,  medicines are in foil and bubble wrap, non recyclable.

I remember getting loose frozen peas as a kid for mum that stopped when she found a frozen wood lice lol. But I agree so much was loose packed in paper bags 4oz of sugar coated lemon drops pls for 6d

  16. Have people here been able to join a boat going up river which has vhf aboard can do the course and buy a set but don’t want the expense. Used to radio use as had DC 10 and Airbus taxi approval when in work as aircraft eng but Lic expired now. Had fun doing that had total radio failure while taxing round Gatwick in a dc 10 and brake failure in a A 300 while approaching live runway crossing all in a days work lol l. Anyway would like to transit with a legal Lic holder

  17. Barrus’s  after sales seem a bit wanting I removed the travel pack alternator to have new bearings installed as it’s run 3000 hrs and prevention is better than cure. If bearings fail a very expensive alternator gets wiped out. While it’s off I removed the tensioning pulley and the bearing was very dry and as it’s done 6000 hours time to replace it. Guess what Barrus who installed the travel pack when the engine was new don’t keep any spares not available they say. Anyway 4 countries marine who is doing bearing replacement will source a replacement and install but it’s not a straightforward job but I am sure he will come through.
Disappointed in Barrus if you supply from your factory a complete engine as shown by the manual supplied you would think they would supply the parts required to service it as they shipped it. 4 countries marine a very good see his web site his work is top notch. He installed a upgraded alt for the domestic batteries and they operation since has been so much better.

  18. Just need to get out from winter mooring in marina. Getting fed up looking at boat next door. Don’t care where we go just get out on the cut. Been in here doing jobs that require being in a marina otherwise we are out on the cut 365 days a year. Sadly boat will be sold in early 2023 as we are to return to Goa India which is a main home after I retired me a Brit wife is half Irish half German born and brought up in India I know it sounds a heady mix but she is 100 % pukka Hindi speaking Indian. She loves the boat life but it will be time to rtn home plus I need a hip replaced and with NHS as it is I will be dead before getting it done here.

  19. Spoke with a electric boat owner a little while back and he said the battery pack which is Lithium cost him wait for it £40k, now if they last for 8 years that’s £5k a year replacement cost even if lithium cost drop by 50% bearing in mind the demand from the auto industry that’s still £2.5 k a year plus a diesel generator running costs so please where is the up side of going electric I ask myself. Also told me that he can get a day’s cruising on a charge well dipper-de-do for that money I would want a lot more than that. So me I will stick with my 4 pot oil burner with 6000 hrs on the clock and still runs sweet as, oil change every 250 hours g/box every 500 hours together with fuel filter. Air filter is K&N so wash once every 6 months so that’s me done for routine maintenance. Lot cheaper than electric that’s for sure.

  20. The CRT logs boats moving and going through locks and you can request a movement report from them which lists where your boat has been seen. So if you are a CC but only seen in one area they would know now what they do about it is another matter. I’ve had my number logged by log keepers lots of times for this reason.
As to the boats with sheds type that stay in one location it’s very hard for the CRT to action and the local council don’t want the person made homeless as they then have to deal with them and not the CRT, so we just have to put up with these type of “I DON’T GIVE A SH*T” owners.

Also checkers have to be careful they don’t run into a nut job that does them serous harm. So no more.

But I bet it was well painted prettily.

I did aircraft engineering for 50 years and any old a/c with a nice paint job was said to had a “Mexican overhaul” wipe over with a oily rag and a paint job. Lol.
I’ve helped a couple of people lady’s broken down in narrowboat and my labour rates are cheap just one or two cups of tea an hour! One lady gave away a bottle of red wine which was her husbands he was happy they were fixed but not so happy being a bottle short after.
