  1. And what difference will having coolant (antifreeze) instead of plain water make to your problems do you think? It may increase the boiling point by a few degrees but it will not sort an overheating engine out. Just what is the problem you are having? Is it overheating or what? Have you taken the end caps off the Bowman heat exchanger to remove the rubbish yet?
  2. No, Sam is dad, won't post one here again, at least not often as some bastard on the forum keeps trying to break his password as I explained before. I'm hiding from a completely different set of idiots.
  3. If you turned a lock that was set for the boat coming in the opposite direction, you stole the lock. End of. Wardle canal junction is confusing if the boat waiting to come up is hiding around the corner on the T&M instead of being on the lock mooring immediately below Wardle lock. May be simpler now that the water point is not there.
  4. I know people who are old enough to remember when there was a 2.5% discount for immediate cash payment on most invoices. Just saying, not condoning.
  5. !968, Ford Silver Fox and Blue Mink and they were water based primers at the time.
  6. I would guess that the 260 box referred to was a "rebuilt" from Key Engineering. And the best of luck with it. A brand new 280 which is the current production from a main stockist of PRM, Lancing Marine, was bought by me last year for £1434 inc VAT delivered. No further comment.
  7. Bus bar side, nothing between the shunt and the battery.
  8. If you take it off, and I think you will have to as no one would want to cut and weld 25mm bar in situ, try the local blacksmiths. Here is a list from Google your friend. https://www.google.com/search?q=blacksmith in cheshire&oq=blacksmith+in+cheshire&aqs=chrome..69i57j33.10299j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&npsic=0&rflfq=1&rlha=0&rllag=53227840,-2418055,13517&tbm=lcl&rldimm=1421730041659849228&ved=2ahUKEwi0kPKQk57jAhVHURUIHZxUC3kQvS4wAnoECAoQJg&rldoc=1&tbs=lrf:!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:2#rlfi=hd:;si:;mv:!1m2!1d53.467674099999996!2d-1.9266857999999998!2m2!1d53.0096178!2d-2.9725778999999997!3m12!1m3!1d222069.1053824428!2d-2.4496318499999994!3d53.23864595!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i381!2i279!4f13.1;tbs:lrf:!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:2
  9. The lever on the gearbox has 3 definite detent positions, forward, neutral and reverse. It directs hydraulic pressure to the clutches. It needs to move fully to these positions for positive engagement of the clutches. Take the cable off the lever and you will be able to feel the 3 positions, the cable needs to connect without having to move the lever from its proper detent in all 3 positions. You can try running the engine and check for positive engagement by moving the lever by hand without the cable connected. Do make sure the cable is not about to snap, they often do.
  10. Check the travel on the gearbox lever is correct when you engage gear with the hand control, it may not be getting full travel due to wear, bad adjustment or a gear cable that is about to snap. If you disconnect the cable at the gearbox, and move hand lever to reverse. move gear lever on the box to the reverse position, the cable should fit straight in without moving either lever. If the box is warn, a repair with new clutch is not expensive but consider a new PRM 280 current model, its a straight drop in swap and I bought one last year for less than £1400 delivered. The 160 has fibre clutch plates, later models, 260 and 280 have bronze clutches, all will interchange. If there is water in a 160 box it ruins the clutches.
  11. Seems to be a reverse layout with galley at stern,
  12. Most likely cement asbestos sheet if its over 20 years old, or none asbestos "cape" heat resisting board if later. Old asbestos cement used in roofing and garage/shed buildings is safe as long as not disturbed or broken up, there are thousands of tons of this stuff around causing no problem. If you are concerned, paint it carefully with dilute PVA whilst wearing a good dust mask, not a gauze pad cheapy.
  13. If it is properly overplated, no water should get between the original hull and the overplate from the outside. But if the bilge has been flooded then it could well get in from the inside but the original hull would have to be in an exceptionally poor condition. In which case prior to overplating it would have sunk. The seller may be correct, or he may be very optimistic.
  14. If you are convinced that it is the gearbox screeching I would drain the oil and see what is in it. Listen to it with a length of hose close to your ear and the box. If there is bronze dust in the oil I would suspect that the cone clutch is damaged. Ensure that the gear linkage is moving the gearbox lever correctly in and out of gear without excessive travel or free play in either direction.
  15. Water pump could screech but I doubt it would hold back the engine to this extent. As the PRM 80 is a dual cone clutch as far as I remember it cannot select forward and reverse at the same time. Have you asked PRM what the effect of using ATF in a box intended for engine oil could be? Have you checked that there is nothing wrapped on the prop?
  16. When being a recovery driver, occasionally I would "collect" (steal) the wrong car. There were miriad BMC 1100s, Minis, Cortinas etc. around and often 5 or 6 similar cars in one street. Often we had no keys so expected to have to open cars. Just used to take them back and repark them, only one was ever reported as missing and it was back again before the Blue Boys caught up with me.
  17. Sash weights if you find them or lead scrap for maximum weight minimum volume. Of course DU beats hands down for density. And you would need less lights, and have no bugs living inside.
  18. Sure I have seen a cast plaque from one of the old canal companies to the effect that a £5 fee would be offered for recovering a body from the cut. Could be a spoof I suppose. Perhaps 10/- would have been enough then.
  19. There used to be a reward paid for the recovery of a body from the water. Perhaps the Police and Fire Services are claiming it for themselves...................
  20. RCD will have a "test" button on it. MCB will not have. Mcb will have a current rating on it, 6, 10, or 16 amps. exceeding this load will trip it out. Look at the appliances and the water heater ratings. Each kilowatt will be approx 4 amps. Gal Isol is the first thing in the earth wire in the boat after the blue input socket/plug.
  21. Don't wimp it, name and shame the git.
  22. Ah, the Blue Lias Bridge. A breasted pair can get through, but only just. This I know!

  24. Ask the local Beta engineer, he is a friendly chap and has been working on Betas since they started. He lives not far from Macclesfield. Chris Jones. 07887565531 01270884284
  25. I use Lidl jam jars. They have a good screw top seal. Fill them with paint and a drop of thinners on top. Even if you can't get the lids off after its easy to pierce them to pour the paint into a paint kettle. Everybody does use a paint kettle don't they? I like the stone idea. Chucking the skin away will alter the shade and make up of the paint I would think.
