  1. That seems to be a possibility, no display or other problems so far but perhaps I can look forward to them in future! At least I will now be prepared, thanks very much.
  2. I am using Safari and I could try a different browser. Before I do I would like to understand more about the "result" of the change of theme and try to understand why the problem should have manifested only 3 weeks ago. I have asked Apple about situations where excess heat is generated without apparent extra CPU activity and am awaiting a detailed reply. I appreciate your effort to help but would ask you to bear with me for now.
  3. As far as I can see it doesn't make it anything (whether starting with a 'c' or not) and I haven't suggested that it does. What it is is a fact, I am trying to establish a cause for this fact but progress is slow because I am not in a position to conduct random trials.
  4. I have switched to the legacy version of the forum and so far, not encountered the problem. However the problem didn't occur with the new site until about 3 weeks ago and is intermittent, it does not happen every time.
  5. Yes, immediately - if I move from this forum to anything else, then the temperature drops and the fan switches off - it takes less than a minute. The thing is the CPU monitor does not show greatly increased activity while this heating occurs. I would assume a hardware problem if it were not that it is site specific. A 2014 Mac book pro retina. I have not tried Chrome or Firefox. I can't see the 'theme' link.
  6. No, that is what's weird. I can watch youtube or the BBC, only this site causes the overheating and only during the last few weeks. I've been using the forum for years and the Mac is 4 years old. Also, no great activity shows up on the activity monitor. It's very strange.
  7. My Mac book pro gets hot and the fan becomes audible after about 3 mins on this site only. This has occurred for the last 3 weeks or so. Can anyone suggest (in the simplest terms) what I might do to return things to normal?
  8. WW sent me the application form in an e-mail, perhaps there was a link, I didn't find it. If the boat is at Crick I hope they will deliver it for free; if it's 'somewhere on the canal' there is just too much to go wrong. Delivery would not be impossible but it would inconvenience me (admittedly not £250 worth of inconvenience but then I didn't know the mooring cost when I conceived the plan). I promise to try harder next time.
  9. I have a disability which affects my mobility a little (sometimes quite a bit) so I thought it best to be close. I admit that I didn't think we were only talking a 100m or so (and I don't think the booking form made this clear). Still, what's done is done. I won't be home at the time, we will be cruising, so delivery would be inconvenient.
  10. I know exactly what you mean! Trouble is I plan a purchase, no longer drive a car, and need to (a) get there and (b) get my purchase to the boat. As we will be cruising in May anyway, I thought it would be sensible to take the boat to the show. I nearly changed my mind when I saw the price! It better not rain!!!
  11. I have now booked my mooring for next year's show (thanks Bruce). So far, I have only had an acknowledgment of my booking fee. How/when do you find out where your mooring is? You know - the general arrangements for the show and so on? Perhaps a naive question but does the mooring fee include entry to the show - it wasn't clear on the application form so I expect not - but the mooring certainly cost enough (£250+).
  12. It used to be possible to find a member by an alphabetic search, for instance if you wanted to PM them. Has this facility gone? If not, how do I find it?
  13. Hey, that's a brilliant idea. I sometimes wake up and wonder if the dog and the wife are alive or dead - neither of them have learnt to manage a deep, robust snore, despite my good example. Strange thing is, if I give the wife a good solid nudge and ask if she is asleep, I get nothing but abuse, quite unlike the dog who doesn't seem to care - or in any event, doesn't resort to foul language.
  14. Having a 70' boat based in the midlands, I have often though of a swap (perhaps for a month or two) with a northern based 60' boat. I think I would have to know the owners, I doubt I could hand my boat to strangers (oddly, I am certain that I could be trusted with theirs!!).
  15. I bought a cheap one (£50 or thereabouts). It came in a case and (apart from a day or so when new) it has been there ever since. A bit like the remote camera which I bought at the same time. And my DC clamp meter, come to think of it. Whenever I think any of them would be useful at home (not very often) the're on the boat and vice versa.
  16. i had all the computing power I needed at work, and someone to sort it out if it went wrong. As soon as I retired I replaced my Dell, running windows, with an Apple mac book pro (I had to beat myself over the head at the price) and have been completely satisfied since. Numbers is not as powerful as excel but it is easy to learn and good enough for my purposes. Pages is more or less the same as word as far as I can see (only problem is I can't ask my secretary for help when I get stuck). If cost is not an insurmountable problem, I would advise you to go the Apple route.
  17. My bilge is in two parts; a a foot or so below the prop shaft entry which is completely separate from the rest (and very difficult to access from above) and b the other 69 feet which are inaccessible apart from at the very back. I have two Rule bilge pumps, one dealing with each area. The rear one is entirely manual (2 wires) but the forward (by about 2 feet) one has 3 wires and a float switch. The theory is that if the tiny rear bilge fills, water will pass back past the drive shaft and activate the "forward" float switch. The engine is 12 feet forward of all this and can be ignored for this discussion.
  18. Ours is ducted so is deep even though we don't have much freeboard. On the whole I prefer it on safety grounds but I wouldn't mind borrowing your orang-utan now and then (or perhaps a gibbon would be cheaper to feed).
  19. It's a forum, it is for the expression of views, I'm expressing mine; you don't have to like them, read them or respond to them. You asked a mildly boat related question but phrased in a way which led me to wonder what would crawl out from under the rock if it was lifted. Some of us then gave it a kick to see what emerged - what we have seen isn't particularly edifying IMHO. Excuse me now, I've got to work on my petty insecure innuendoes, particularly on the spelling!
  20. Yep. You would have trouble guessing it from the answers!
  21. Perhaps the OP meant "migrant economists" not "economic migrants" - an easy error to make. Most of us have had problems with Friedman, Marx, Hayek etc though it probably wouldn't be fair to call Adam Smith a migrant as he only migrated from Scotland. I think babylek should clear this up in case we are all giving inappropriate advice.
  22. I have not. Then again, if I had problems with someone I'd probably prioritise sorting the problem rather than trying to establish their status as an economic migrant flooding Europe. Of course, as a boater, I am against floods as a matter of principle.
  23. I think that I would press for direct contact with the owner in such a case. Certainly if I were selling I would not want a potential sale to fall through because the broker could not be bothered to organise a test drive.
  24. I "just know" that both of the two highlighted phrases cannot be correct. If either is right then the other is wrong (both, of course, may be wrong). I "just know" that I'm right here.
