  1. Lizzy Lou you asked a question orientated about the safety of the financial transaction. You got a plethora of good advice overall, yet you eventually decided it was not what you wanted to read, correct? You can always "trust" everyone........I'm sure it will be alright on the night.........on the other hand.....
  2. If a broker isn't using an Escrow service, one needs to ask them ....why not?
  3. Could always weld two NB's together I s'pose...... (Where there's a way, there's a weld)

  6. Where is dunchurch? I am looking at all marinas within a 45-60 minute drive from home, which is 20 mins west of Chester, cheshire. Aqeduct/tattenhall/ABC (Northwich)/Northwich/Venetian/etc etc. Chirk seems to be the nearest and best all rounder (from a countryside perspective). Aqeduct is the best in terms of layout, standards and ameneties by far. But it's not cheap!
  7. http://www.lse.co.uk/ShareChat.asp?ShareTicker=KDNC&page=2 How's this for Lithium demand!
  8. Tree monkey - while youre on...whats chirk marina like? It's on my short list for a mooring. Regards
  9. Crikey - I forgot about that! Do they have a tow truck big enough to tow it away? More worrying though - some crazy mum and her kids might scratch the hull when they park next to it, with their shopping trolley!
  10. Don't take it too seriously ADE. Who cares?? I'm discussing spray can logistics and you pick me up about lifestyles?? Surprised you didn't comment on Lidl management complaining about a narrowboat in their car park! Smile, jesus loves you.......
  11. 850 cans @ £2.50/can = £2125. 10 cans/carrier bag = 85 bags@ 10p = £8.50. 40 cans per trolley = 21 trolleys. 10 carrier bags per car boot = 9 full car boots. 5 miles from home = 10 miles x 9 visits = 90 miles@ 30mpg = 3 gallons. (£18). And then all over again from home to your boat! All the above on the back of a fag packet of course! Cheaper to road haul your boat to the Lidl car park and do it there across half a dozen car slots!!!?
  12. How rigourous are the CT in policing ......and prosecuting such misdeeds? Do they have 'teeth'.

  14. Thanks all for your views. I'm not looking for a live aboard (far from it!). I'm looking at a weekender now and again, lazy day trips, good scenery and off the beaten track pub lunches! I am 'almost' decided on type of boat but it would be foolish to rule out "the other option" (WB) once the subject was raised by a colleague of mine. Due dilligence (and all that) suggests various issues be considered, including - moorings, distance from house to boat, scenery, running costs, maintenance etc etc. Some of you have now helped me with some of those issues - thank you. I'm almost there with my choice but every time I see the inside of a WB - I 'wobble' - there is so much space and light and freedom compared to a "sewer tube" (horrible connotation!). Having looked at a lot of NB's now, there is so much sameness (dark and dingy spaces/shiney brown varnished plywood/tacky bathrooms) below say £45k....choices are extremely limited. As mentioned above - you get what you pay for. (Frankly this 'sameness' doesn't seem to manifest itself in the WB world, so much (if at all). Having poured over Northern and NW canals for widebeams this weekend it is becoming apparent there are restrictions in my operating area and that WB's may not meet most of my criteria (above)...shame really....I'd love one in theory. Thanks again.
  15. Thanks guys. Apprecieated. Richard: 45 mins from Runcorn, so a drop in the ocean if you'll excuse the pun! Anything further than that (say an hour) will make the hobby unattractive. But are the (widebeam)canals and surrounding scenery as beautiful as the llangollen canal and surrounds! I have to say - the widebeams are gorgeous below decks and I 'think' they would suit me better, but I don't want a 'nice house in a lousy area'! Widebeams seem to be the same price as their equivalent length narrowboats. Strange! Do widebeams roll more than NB's? Is insurance the same? Running costs the same? Thanks FN
  16. I'm fully aware that widebeams won't fit on the llangollen canal. But where can they access on the shropshire north of nantwich, please? Search engine isn't helpful.
  17. thanks for a constructive response
  18. I'm sure there is a section on widebeams on this canalworld forum...Could someone point me in the general direction please? I am on the verge of buying a narrowboat but latterly a friend commented on widebeams as an alternative. I live in N Wales very close to the Llangollen and shropshire canals (middlewich/chester). Thanks in advance FN
  19. Most insurance covers other persons in charge but I would suggest you remind anyone who ends up driving your boat that alcohol and insurance companies don't mix. If there is an incident and alcohol is involved.......it'll end up in your lap....... (not the alcohol, either!).
  20. Depends where you are? Marinas and towns I have experience of: Tattenhall - Clean sprawling and organised marina. Close to town which is typical "Cheshire set"! Chester - no marina but you can moor for a while. Beautiful and historic bustling Roman city. Locks are challenging! Northwich - small marina, pretty average. Dump of a town. Uplands marina is a dump. ABC marina next door is small and no character. Anderton boat lift is unique experience/coffee shop/mooring only. Nantwich - Aqueduct marina - New - very clean and very professional and well laid out marina offering everything. Nantwich isn't bad either. Chirk Marina near Ruabon, N Wales. - Gorgeous landscape including the world heritage Pontcysyllte aquaduct. Chice of Wrexham town (okay) or travel down the canal to Llangollen (v nice town).
  21. Two fish or not to fish...............
  22. Brilliant thread??? Herrings can be quite dangerous in the wrong hands! I've seen it all now - a drilled SQUARE hole!!!!
