  1. We have no electric on our mooring, we often go to Costa coffee and spend about half an hour in there, they have mains sockets free to use to charge devices, we were thinking if we took a power bank with us in our bags how much charge could we suck up in half an hour without blowing their fuses ? Might be worth it if we could power our tablets, WiFi device, phones, and led lamp for the night ? Every little helps if your off grid.
  2. You could have a canal system without any on line moorings like the ye olde days , and the boats left could cut about the system at 4 mph non stop, you could reenact deliveries to long gone jam factories as much as you want, however you will have to pay the share of all the licences of the boats you get rid of. Good luck with your £10,000 per year licence.
  3. They do stop spinning, they produce about 25 / 30% of their rated capacity.
  4. Do you get the electric boat discount if you have an onboard generator to charge the batteries ?
  5. The more you move away from ICE' s the more electricity you need to generate, and the more you replace fossils fuels and nuclear with solar and wind the less power you can generate , so you're increasing demand while decreasing supply, I'm not a scientist but I know that ain't going to work.
  6. Last time this happened a load of boats came speeding past late at night, woke everyone up on our mooring, and tore peoples mooring pins out of the ground, not to mention abusing the locks , slamming gates, and dropping paddle gears. They have no right to do that.
  7. " sole means of propulsion " is pretty vague. What if you have a generator on board to charge the batteries to power the motor ?
  8. The whole aim of this wasn't to cruise with it, or be more green or efficient, but to get a licence discount until such time as we fit the engine.
  9. We've got a shell that were going to fit out on our mooring starting in the spring, it has a petrol out board on it just to get it here and shuttle it about the local area if needed, can we get an electric boat discounted licence if we use an electric outboard ? What if we had a outboard powered directly from our 6 kva Diesel generator would it still qualify ? ( probably have to built one ourselves )
  10. My small coal shovel I got from Wilco's bent and collapsed in two weeks, does anyone know where to get a proper heavy duty one not made of biscuit tin metal from ?
  11. Living on a boat and paying the licence fees doesn't get you any advantages for housing then compared to living off grid on land. Probably living in a Yurt, or a Shepherds hut hidden in a wood would be less hassle ? ( I'm aware that's not allowed either )
  12. A small plot for £35,000 if its not residential status.
  13. If they can refuse to renew your mooring agreement at any time you would be left with owning land that is probably useless to anyone else. Nasty.
  14. Has anyone investigated into buying offside land on a CRT canal and creating their own mooring ? Does CRT have a policy on this , would they never allow it, or would they consider it ? We want to know because when were out and about on our boat we sometimes see spots that would make a nice mooring and we start dreaming of our perfect mooring isolated out in the countryside, a vegetable patch for me, and the wife wants to open a hedgehog hospital for some reason ! Better we know now if there's no chance of it being allowed.
  15. I recently called CRT customer services and they didn't know where the Grand Union Canal was, so probably best not them about this one.?
  16. I've been offered one of these , they are 12 /24 volt output only, at 20 amps , they are super reliable, cheap secondhand, and quiet, the voltage is set by the rpm, and there is no control of the charging at all, my question is , is there a charge controller that I could use with this ? I want to use it to top up my batteries in the winter when my solar panels are dormant.
  17. I'm not on Facebook, can you copy and post the tables ?
  18. Were looking to order 2 x 100 ah bog standard leisure batteries, we want to go as low cost as reasonable because we don't have the commitment to look after expensive batteries, can anyone recommend a low cost brand that is not junk please ? Are the cheapest Chinese brands good value or not ? Like these... https://www.tayna.co.uk/leisure-batteries/powerline/xv190mf/ Or https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-110AH-LEISURE-BATTERY-HEAVY-DUTY-LOW-HEIGHT-100-AH-AMP-110-AMP-DUAL-PURP/301581095653?hash=item4637a252e5:g:vVIAAOSwpbVbU0yO
  19. What does the optimum charging regime look like then ? Discharge right down then a big charge once a week, or always keep them above a specific voltage ?
  20. What kind of device would cut off my feed from the leisure battery bank so that they are never damaged by over discharging ? I have 480w of solar so there is always some charge going in , so they would at least maintain the minimum voltage until I could charge them again. And how much would it cost ?
  21. I gave them a full charging with a 30 amp digital leisure battery charger from the mains until the unit switched itself off, I've now got the new solar controller installed , and were back in operation.
  22. My solar controller failed and my battery bank has gone down to - 10 v , I have a new Tracer MPPT controller to fit, my question is will the controller power itself up off the solar coming in if the batteries are flat, or do I need to get some voltage in them first ?
  23. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  24. What equipment would I need to get a still camera picture of my boat that I can dial up on my android phone when I'm away ? I only need to check the front doors are still locked the rest of the boat is very secure steel doors. Looking for the cheapest option.
