They also had ridge dodger rings, they had a step cut in the top edge of the new top ring so it would avoid the step at the top of the bore made by the sweep of the original ring. Real rough stuff but back then money was tight, unlike the bores.

How can I DIY clean my oil cooler?
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to Vicki Kanninchen's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
Remove and back flush it with a hose, just use your hand to make a seal and run the water in the opposite direction to normal flow. If you run it into a bucket you can see what washes out. If you can see the individual tubes you could poke a pipe cleaner down them to make sure they are clear. Do not use wire ect as you could damage the tubes. Good luck. -
Cheap Narrow boat, Big project

I have read post 20 it refers to the RCD, not relevant to my post or the OPs boat. Hows the weather in Brussels? -

I am not seeing the post in which I claim to have read them? In my original post I offered the OP best wishes and support in his project and said the regulations were not that onerous. This thread is about his boat, an old boat. You pair of clowns have decided to round on me waving your RCD paperwork and quoting rules and regulations that bear no relation to the thread. You don't live in Brussels by any chance? -

If you could quote the bit where I inferred I had read the RCD that would be great. -

As stated above my post predated your RCD/OCD bullshit fest. You chose to presume you know what I meant, your mistake. 5759 and counting. -

You should note my original post predated all the RCD bullshit being discussed. And that is the post you chose to comment on. -

BSS boat safety scheme. BSC? BSSC? IDFK?? And another one! The boat in question is not new, it is not subject to RCD requirements. It will require BSS which is available online. -

The boat in question is not new, the post is not about a new boat so RCD has nothing to do with this post. I would have thought for someone who wastes their entire life on here you would have known that? (Post count noted). -

Good luck with your project, it already sounds like you have the skills and know enough people to make a judgment on the viability of the boat. The regs are all online and not a complicated as some people would like to think. Its a canal boat at the end of the day, not the space shuttle. -
cant get engine to run.. HELP !!
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to crosser's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
A head gasket ring blown between two cylinders will allow an engine to crank , all the valves ect move as usual but it will not start, the compression just passes from one cylinder to the next. It would be unlucky for all three cylinders to be involved but not impossible. Test for such faults or valve faults by placing flat fingers over the intake and feeling for suction when cranking. Do not use your palm or other body parts cover it unless you want a hard to explain love bite. -
Pump Out Charcoal/Blue/Green/Yeast/etc
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to Guest's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
If you have any doubt about the flexi hoses swap them out for rigid plastic plumbing waste pipe if possible. We did ours a couple of years ago and it is a good upgrade. Plus another vote for the bio washing powder, the aldi one is cheap and works well. -
Frozen/Thawed... maybe a leak?
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to JGL's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
On the top of the calorifier there should be a pressure relief valve like a black plastic knob, usually they twist and you can bleed any air out of there. -

Narrowboat Nimrod replied to JGL's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
Have you bled the calorifier? Air trapped here or in any part of the system will Cause the pump to run longer. Might be worth checking. -
Do you need a new engine & gearbox ?
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to Alan de Enfield's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
No story as to why a perfectly good engine has been removed at 2100hrs? I think it would be one to avoid. -
Steve Hudson Boat Fuel Tank Level

Flame retardant clear is available, would this still not comply? -
Steve Hudson Boat Fuel Tank Level
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to mick55's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
If it has a cross pipe between the two tanks can you tap into this with a tee piece and a length of clear pipe so it shows the level. The end of the clear would need to be open to air perhaps with a breather fitted and finish well above the full tank level. -
In the second (rather blurry picture) it looks like your shunt is just floating around on the end of the cables? Has it come adrift?

My big boat convered to electric drive
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to peterboat's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
Other than the UK government in 2019 that has pledged £390 million to hydrogen technology. This is not a one horse race. EV now is great for passenger vehicle technology people travel short distances and go home most nights but commercial vehicles have a different requirement and boats would be better aligned with this. Take your blinkers off. -

It is happening, please check how many manufactures are releasing Hydrogen and Hydrogen hybrid commercial vehicles in 2020. Hydrogen generation will be powered by the same methods used to charge your EV be that fossil fuels or renewables. You get nothing for nothing in this life. The difference is EV infastructure needs to run down thousands of miles of non existant cables and gives vehicles a limited range. Where will we dig all the copper up for that?Hydrogen is like filling up with diesel. Just because they are happy to sell you EV now does not mean it is the best technology for the future. -

Hydrogen is zero emissions IC technology, it has existed for years. -

Technology has a habit of gathering pace but I think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves. The first hybrid car I worked on was in 1998, the Toyota prius, hybrid not EV I grant you. We are now 21 years down the track seeing an increase in uptake with infrastructure lagging behind. I think once we have mastered the EV 40 ton truck, and EV large passenger plane they might think about electrifying the canal network. Most people reading this will be worm food long before we need to stress about how many charge points we will need or where they will be sited. If you want zero emissions narrowboats hydrogen technology already exists that would be ideal and have similar refuelling distance to current diesel. This is the most likely fuel for heavy vehicles in the future. -

Narrowboat Nimrod replied to peterboat's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
The demand in the next couple of decades to recharge cars and a tiny handful of boats will outstrip generating capacity and just cause more reliance on coal fired power. If you buy an electric car or boat you might feel a bit greener but you will still be burning fossil fuels well into the future. -
Tightening the Stuffing Box
Narrowboat Nimrod replied to robtheplod's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
If it wares at the same rate as ours you may only have two thousand hours of cruising left before it needs repacking?. As others have said adjust each side equally until some resistance is felt on turning the prop shaft and nip up the lock nuts.
