  1. I've used VHF at sea and inland, and am now afloat in Belgium. Also have a HAM licence. DSC isn't used inland - in mainland EU waters this is replaced by ATIS (automatic transmission identification system - not the same as AIS)) but UK has not signed up to this. ATIS is switch-able on DSC units but if you're not coming over here why pay for it. If you think you might go to sea then maybe. Another thing to mention when comparing mobile phones with a radio is that the phone only contacts one person whereas in an emergency the VHF may be heard by others who are closer to you to render assistance. Equally you might be able to help them! Best brands imho are Standard Horizon (Yaesu to HAM ops) and Icom. I have a Midland unit as one of the 2 (yes 2!) ATIS units that I am required to carry and frankly its rubbish. Hope this helps - cheapest isn't the best here. If you can fit a "proper" fixed station then it really is the best way to go - Standard Horizon Unit at £99 or so is a good one (you won't find a new unit without DSC/ATIS) or Ebay for an older Icom model now that yotties are upgrading (not that anyone ever seems to use DSC anyway......!). Antenna another £30 or so but will come with cable and a plug and is pre-tuned so you won't need a SWR meter for it. Tim
  2. Hi Titan. I've only just seen your post, but I have one of these on my Dutch Barge and have no problems with it. It seems efficient and doesn't use too much fuel. Tim
  3. To all my FB friends, may I request you to please do something for me: I want to stay PRIVATELY connected with YOU. However, with the recent changes in FB, the public can now see activities in ANY wall. This happens when our friend hits "like" or "comment", automatically, their friends would see our posts too. Unfortunately, we cannot change this setting by ourselves because Facebook has configured it this way. So I need your help. Only you can do this for me. PLEASE place your mouse over my ...

  15. Does anyone know if you can use a Blackberry Curve as a tethered modem into a laptop? I have oodles of data in my package (er... so to speak) that I'm not using.
  16. Hi Liam - I have just found this post via a search, looking for the same info. My forum name has been Shenstone Oak for some time but that boat has now gone. Is it possible to have my forum name changed to "Barge Maria" please (obviously without the "'s!!)? Thanks Tim
  17. Our dutch barge has been heavily overplated (the original hull is 101 years old this year). It does bring possible problems, but there are loads of commercial boats out there that are the same. It is possible to carefully drill the inner skin, tap a thread, and add a grease nipple through which you can add waxoyl or whatever, but to be honest I agree with the other poster here - go and enjoy it! Other things will go wrong that will occupy your time, I promise! Most boats dies as they rust from the inside out not the other way round. If the survey pronounced the overplating good then you should be OK but make sure you look carefully at the welding and especially that they have used stitching welds in the centres of the plates, to hold them, not just "edge" welds. Good boating
  18. That's what I mean - Small vessels give way to "normal" vessels under CEVNI ass you well know.
  19. With regard to who gives way to whom you might want to refer to the CEVNI rules on pleasure boats giving way to commercials (which Stein's boat almost certainly would be classed as). Don't make the arrogance right though I agree.
  20. I understand why people get pi--ed off with this forum. You presume that I have no interest, and yet you know nothing about me. I've worked for years on classic cars and have saved more than a few from the scrapyard. My point is that there ARE many vessels out there that need to be removed as they are, frankly, wrecks. Perhaps this one wasn't, but no-one saved it and it is, ergo, a wreck now! People who want yto save older vessels - such as yopurself - will do so, and more power to your arm, but it's no good that the overall tone of this forum is that of pontificating that everyone should do so, as some people DO want a new shiny boat (mine isn't btw) so more power to them as well. We can't all be the same, but just because you've been around in canal circles for years doesn't set you above others who haven't. Life ain't like that old son. Rant over
  21. so where were they when this one went down then??
  22. I hate to say it, but do you seriously think anyone's going to save this? If the owners wanted to preserve it surely they would have already?
  23. Just come back from 3 weeks out including the Tidal Thames and non tidal to Oxford - it'd brilliant!! Remember to check that your fuel filters are OK and that the water separator is OK - the Thames is not the place to conk out and the engine will be working harder than normal. Check engine coolant as well, AND that the weed hatch is tight down. The boat that came out of Limehouse with us didn't - AAAAGH!!!!
  24. I agree with the petition regarding removal of online moorings and have signed it, but what's this cr-p about controlling boater elite? Who are they then?
