  1. Only to make it look good, but not needed for security of mooring.
  2. Yes ,went through it twice in September. And yes it is totally bonkers. I didn't time it but 25 mins is probably about right. I've also still got the small blood blister on my left palm from trapping it in the folding handle mechanism on one of the winding wheels. I also had the thought of sacrificing a key and let the waiting motorists get some exercise - just to protest/show how stupid it is. The thing is as traffic starts to build you naturally try to speed up to minimise their inconvenience. Or at least I do - I'm not bolshy enough. It certainly gave me a work out. I was breathing heavy for a good couple of minutes after. My wife would probably have taken twice as long to do the bridge. When we went through there was a 'security'? person sat in a van by the bridge, who came out to advise me how to use the bridge properly the first time we went through. I'm not sure if this the only function of this person or they are also providing security for the development site (but work doesn't seem to have started on that yet).
  3. Width is certainly not a problem, the Leeds & Liverpool is a wide canal. I am currently on it with a 55 x 9ft chubby narrowboat. There are quite a few 22 to 26ft river cruisers up here, so unless the OP's boat is particularly deep or high it shouldn't be a problem.
  4. Do those bridge keepers have VHF? It sounds like it would be useful, like talkng to the lock keepers on the Trent. They could then tell you if they required you to wait for the green light or to proceed anyway because you will fit under.
  5. Alpine Quest works well with the Waterway Routes qct files on Android and Chromebook. Unfortunately, there is no iOS version.
  6. Today Sykehouse Lift Bridge, New Junction Canal. Doing my bridge keeper role whilst out walking the dog this morning. I think he was a little early and had beaten CRT to the bridge.
  7. Been through Barnby Dun a couple of times this year and there are volunteers there sometimes - usually in the morning.
  8. Very often when the forecast starts showing varying percentage risk of showers it is best to look at the weather map animation to get an idea of whether it is a definite front/band of rain coming through or scattered showers. It's the way they derive very localised forecasts from the projected data. Sometimes if your location is going to be right on the edge of a band of rain the localised forecast can vary drastically every few hours as the expected extent varies.
  9. Commonly used on some northern canals e.g. Aire & Calder, Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation.
  10. The lower end I think is much better because of the amount of new building and increase of footfall on the towpath. However, around the locks at Kirkstall Forge and Newlay is still bad. The lockies huts (containers) are regularly vandalised as are the locks themselves (like trying to set fire to the balance beams!). Three or four years ago we also witnessed kids messing with the Field 3 staircase further up and had to move down to Apperley Bridge because the kids realised it must have been us that notified CRT.
  11. I saw Victoria Plum's Garage a couple of years ago at Stanilands Marina, Thorne looking rather forlorn. However, yesterday I saw this: It has been smartened up and paired with a different boat.
  12. And the Deutsche Bahn locomotives pulling those wood chips to Drax are now supposedly using HVO (or that's what they have painted on the side of them, spotted one a few days ago). Unless they have their own special supply that will be soaking up a huge amount of HVO production.
