The battery voltage when on charge is 14.9.

I have 3 x 270a/h Elecsol open wet cell batteries that are 3 years old and still as good as new. The charging voltage has been 14.9 volts since they were new. When I bought my Smartgauge I suffered the same error code as you do, so I followed Gibbo's advice and disabled the alarm. I did check with Elecsol about charging at 14.9 volts and they confirmed it would not harm the batteries in any way. tosher

  2. Yikes a bowthruster on a 45 footer !! hope I dont meet u on the cut  Truthfully though they r about as much use as a chocolate fireguard spend it on beer instead, as for the tupperware, are they not deliberately put there as fenders..............

Would you share your experiences of using a bow thruster with us all, must be pretty bad to make such a damning statement.

  3. I don't have a problem with pumpouts it is self pumpouts that I have a problem with. Elsans were designed for cassette toilets not for people who cant afford a pumpouts. In October I had to wait for nearly 1 hour while a boat pumped out at the elsan and by the time they had finished there were 3 boats waiting and the smell was terrible, they could have gone to the marina round the corner and had it done for £12 so don't tell me its not about can't afford!!! The sooner these discusting things are banned from all Elsans the better.

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- We all pay for sewage disposal in our liecence fees so why sould cassette owners empty thier sewage without an additional charge when pump out owners have to pay extra in marina's. It's just the same stuff both are emptying and each human being produces roughly the same amount. It seems unfair to me that all boaters are paying for a facility that only some of them can use. If BW cannot provide sufficient self pump out stations then they should reduce the liecence fee for boats with pump out tanks. (or charge for cassette emptying to level the playing field?) tosher

  4. Just a thought but I can't see any reason why you couldn't buy red and declare full 'non propulsion' and then buy standard ULS 'white' from a petrol station then put this into your tank.

You'd not be evading any duty and would be in theory at least be 'improving' the quality of the fuel if you are of the 'red we buy is of a lower grade' line of thought that is often a topic on the forum and if you don't subscribe to this view then you must accept that mixing the two is certaily not going to make the mix any worse than 'standard' red.

Good idea, that's just what I intend to do unless of course someone tells me it's illegal ? As well as keeping a record of white diesel purchased, the mixture in the tank should be proof enough should HMRC take issue and sample your tank contents. Surely the equipment they use to analyse the fuel would detect a mixture of red/white diesel just as it would if it were testing a car. tosher.

  5. If you were fitting a new gearbox would you go for a PRM, Technodrive or Hurth on a 1500cc Beta?

    Brian

My boat has a PRM 150 which works very well and is smooth to operate and I am very happy with it but here is a tale about the robustness of Hurth gearboxes that might help you decide. - For many years I drove a rich mans yacht around the Med for a living. It was a sail boat and had a Perkins auxilliary engine coupled to a Hurth gearbox that after 15 years service reverse gear became very difficult to engage, which made stopping a bit of a hit & miss affair. It was decided to have a complete new engine/gearbox installed and so an engineer from Perkins visited the boat to measure up etc. During his inspection of the old installation he found that the Hurth gearbox linkage was in fact connected up with forward and reverse the wrong way round and that the folding prop had been reversed to to compensate and make the boats direction of travel agree with the direction of the gear lever. So for the previous 15 years when we had been travelling forward the gearbox was actually in reverse, I commented to the engineer that I understood there was a time restriction on using manual gearboxes in reverse because of thrust bearing loadings, yes there is he said there is---15 to 30 MINUTES! Neadles to say we stuck with Hurth for the gearbox. tosher.

What is the best product out there? Ideally, I would like something that I can install and understand myself without making too many changes to the existing wiring and system.

I fitted a "Smartgauge" a couple of weeks ago and all seems to be working well with sensible readings being displayed. I bought it direct from Gibbo who was very helpful with the questions I had regarding it's suitability for my system and advice on fitting. I feel much happier now I have an accurate measurement of the status of my services batteries and can modify my charging regime to suit. tosher

  7. Edders

Had the same thing happen a few weeks ago. whats happened is the float bobbins which operate the magnetic switches, have crudded up and are stuck/sticking on their sliders. You will need to disconnect the wires (noting which coloured wire is on which switch), or you will have fun with the sequence when you reconnect.

When the wires have been disconnected you can then unscrew the whole unit from its mounting flange. remove from the tank strip and clean.

If you Google Tankwatch 4 there is a manual that you can download, easy job about 45min start to finish just a bit mucky. Cleaning the unit that is not the download

Had the same problem, cured axactly as described above. I now make it a yearly routine job. tosher

  8. I wish I'd have known you were there Carl. I could have met you for a pint. My boats only a couple of miles away at Tully's in Rotherham.

    If you pass again...

Sorry to be slightly off topic so hope this is allowed -- Does any one now where red diesel can be bought in this neck of the woods??? Iwant to fill up all my containers while it is cheap. Purely for heating and battery charging of course. Cheers. tosher

  9. this type me thinks

    http://www.midlandchandlers.co.uk/ATTWOOD-...-12V_A1UW9.aspx

personal view on these they are prone to over flowing if the impeller gets hair wrapped up in them causing it to pump slower than it should ,float switch is not the best and prone to breaking(its just a ballbearing that rolls back and forth hitting a micro switch i had one that managed to flood the boat 3 times in less than a year so i do not rate them at all ,,A dedicated shower pump like the whale gulper is a much more reliable pump

Yes that's the one. It's getting on for 2 years old now and to be honest it's never given a minutes bother. The strainer prevents hair etc getting to the pump and If it fills completely it does not leak at all but because the pump removes water faster than it drains in from the bath/shower this seldom happens.

  10. Cheers for that info - that's good news. Does yours have a float switch which turns it on automatically? Having cleaned my existing shower pump for the first time after buying the boat, recently, I can imagine why they need cleaning out now and again. I see what you mean about the vent pipe - makes sense!

Yes, it is completely self contained and has 2 drain inlets, one vent, the pump/float switch/strainer and discharge pipe. It is made by "Attwood". Hope more suggestions come in as I don't have the option to resite it. Cheers.

  11. Hi all,

Right, I've finally kickstarted the plan to rip out and replace the bathroom and bedroom on my 40ft '78 GRP-topped NB.

Been planning this for ages, and I've a week off work, with my best mate on hand, to do this. I've most of the bits and bobs aligned and I've just picked up the tiles for floor and walls.

My last conundrum is how to access the floor under the bathroom, where I'm planning on situating a sump-box for the bath and basin to drain into.

I've been thinking about the sort of metal trays you can get for block paving, where you can pave inside the tray and still have the thing lift out. Other suggestions have been something similar from a swimming pool shop or wet room supplier, but I've drawn a bit of a blank.

My only other suggestion is to leave one tile in place, with the access hole underneath it, bedded on something other than tile adhesive, and 'grouted' with silicone (or neoprene strips) so it can be levered out if needed.

    Any ideas?

Also, I've been reading and thinking about the sump boxes, and I've noted that one or two manufactures suggest that they need "extra sealing and ventilation" (!) of the lid if used with a bath - presumably, due to the head of water in the bath when you pull the plug. Does anyone use one in this way, and is it actually a problem?

    Cheers,

    PC

Hi Paul, I will watch with interest the replies to your post as I too would like to tile the bathroom floor and my bath drain sump box is situated underneath it. With regard to the sump box it works very well with no leaks at all, there is a vent hole in the side of the box that I piped up the inside of the airing cupboard to a level above the top of the bath. I did this because I once emptied the bath & forgot to swith on the drain pump which resulted in the bath contents going into the bilge through the vent. I also have to clean the suction strainer in the sump box quite regularly (every couple of weeks) which tends to block with hair etc so access under the floor is vital. Hope that helps.

  12. Mine is not licenced at the moment, but it is insured and it has a new safety certificate, but importantly it is in a private marina

Is that correct that boats moored in a private marina do not need a valid licence?? BW staff regularly visit the private marina my boat is moored in, checking on boat licences, they check every boat on every mooring.

  13. On my engine installation (Isuzu) I have a vertical calorifier and the header tank is mounted higher up in a cockpit locker. I noticed that the pressure cap on the header tank is the same calibration as the pressure cap on top of the engine heat exchanger, ie. both settings are 95kpa. When the engine is working hard, expansion takes place ok into the header tank and the level rises but I also loose a bit of fluid out of the relief valve on the engine pressure cap. Are these calibrations corrrect ??? or should the lower cap be a higher setting or even a blank to ensure expanding water goes up into the header tank? tosher.

  14. Inverter chargers. I'm in the market for one at the moment, and being a Yorkshireman with short arms and deep pockets I'm naturally drawn to the "value" end of the price spectrum. Which is where the Sterling sits... now having read the forums for a while, I get the impression (rightly or wrongly) that the quality control for these units isn't (or wasn't) too good, with a high percentage of returns. But what I'd like to know is: when they do work - do you rate them? Are they reliable? Do they do what it says on the tin? Help me decide where to spend my hard earned!

Any other feedback would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Ott3r.

I have had a Sterling 3KW Pure sinewave Combi Inverter/Charger, a Sterling 210amp Alternator to Battery Charger and a Sterling 50amp Battery to Battery Charger for 18 months now. After about 14 months the Charger part of the Combi Unit would occassionally trip out and required a manual restart to to start charging again. Sterling replaced the complete unit with a brand new one with no problems or fuss at all and the new one works fine and appears to do everything it says on the tin. That is the only problem I have had and everything else has worked faultlessly. It gets well used as we spend about 6 months a year on the boat and the batteries seem to be very healthy. Hope that helps - tosher (as Yorkie as they cum!!!)

  15. RDCOs' responsibilities

If you supply red diesel to private pleasure craft, you will be required to charge the purchaser the full rate of duty on fuel used for propulsion and pay the duty to us. This is a new requirement for fuel suppliers.

You are not responsible for ascertaining whether the fuel you sell to an individual is for propulsion of a private pleasure craft, although, if you suspect that is the case, you should remind the purchaser of their legal obligation to make a declaration and pay the full rate of duty. You are not responsible if the user fails to make a declaration or makes a false declaration.

    John

The above states "supply red diesel to private pleasure craft" How will this work if you buy red diesel in containers from a garage forecourt that is many miles away from any canal ?? will agricultural users and construction firms who buy red diesel in this way have to make the same declarations.??? interesting.

  16. My 3 thingy is driving me NUTS.

I have a contract with Vodafone for my internet but quite often infact majority of time can only get a 2g signal and most of the time this is ok for me. When checking networks on my Vodafone I noticed that at most places 3 was showing a 3g signal so went to 3 shop and purchased a pay as you go 3 broadband thingy. Well it goes great for a while and says I am receiving a 3 - 3g signal then sudenly it will change to 3 HSPDA and I can no longer open internet pages. Anyone else had this problem??

    John

Same with me and my 3 often drops off line all together but I usually get a signal in most places. Also the speed is quite slow even though a pop up box appears when the connection is made saying "connected at 3.6mbs" the actual speed is normally around 150Kbs. The max I have ever seen using the speed checker 1.5mbs (last night) but that speed is unusual. Having said that even the slower speed is fine for e-mails etc, it's the dropping off line that annoys me most. tosher

Many thanks for this info "Greybeard". I'm sure it will be very helpful when I service mine. tosher
