  1. The guy seems to sell model tractors and cars, perhaps it to big for him? Looks like a senior couple on board, perhaps he can't be bothered, the boats been unused for 3 years.
  2. Frequently there are beginners wanting a cheap boat. Many look at the disaster projects that are always hanging around, mostly money pits that an experienced boater would never look at. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Narrowboat-Dawncraft-Highbridge-30ft-fibreglass/114062354252?hash=item1a8ea5674c:g:MWAAAOSwFPpdJ6Nk Now, here is what looks like a good solution, no rust, no welding, no blacking, needs cosmetic work and a bit of TLC. Boats of known good pedigree. Must be quick, ends today.
  3. Many years ago the tinkers and pikeys turned up in Stockport and occupied Wharf Meadow which was to be developed it a HQ sight for the Gas Board. Asked to leave they told everyone where to go and stayed making a right mess. Told to leave they ignored too. Oddly, there was a terrible fire that burnt most of the vans and vehicles. They never stop in Stockport now.
  4. And thank to you for the thanks and coming back to say that it works,,,, most don't bother.
  5. Fire flue on PORT side is best, not in the trees when you pass an oncoming boat and centrally lengthwise heats the boat not the great outdoors.
  6. First to consider. Its a short boat, any steel you add will drastically affect the draught and the trim so you will have to ballast it when it is afloat and you have added most of the fitout weight, stove, cooker, mattress, etc. Leave floor panels removable, not trapped under bulkheads etc. so you can add ballast where it is needed. Scrap steel takes less room than bricks, sash weights, steel billet offcuts etc. and don't soak up water to cause more rusting. Remember filling diesel and water tanks will seriously alter the draught and trim. Sounds like a very old Springer with a timber top, you are far braver than I to take this on. It was probably built with 4mm or 3/16" plate, take care, insurance companies are refusing to insure if any part of the hull is below 4mm thick. Secondly, The timber top is an annual repair job, it will leak where it joins the steel hull, always. And round every window and door. Be warned, not discouraged, but this could be a real money pit, both now to get it back in use and forever going forward. What engine/gearbox do you have and what condition is it in?
  7. You mean RCR? Another boater caught out, its an ongoing saga. I'm always intrigued by the diagnosis "it needs a new cylinder head". In all my years in the motor and boating trade I can remember only 3 occasions when it had to be a new head and one of those was because the wrong pistons were fitted and it was expedient to change the head. What exactly was wrong with the original head? I've even had cracked ones repaired and they have been fine.
  8. Then you have to cut out more of the inner lining to get at the nuts holding the collar on the roof...........................................nobody said it was easy.
  9. A panting panel is one that changes shape subtly from convex to concave or vice versa when heat from the sun warms it up.
  10. Stopped or moving? Sunny side of the boat? Panting steel panel?

  12. Do it right, do it once and use the best stainless steel pipe you can find.
  13. Thanks, sorry to trouble you looking. I'm still hopelessly confused. Tending towards android but no clearer what make or model may be better for me. £200 sounds an awful lot, my Nokia 1200 cost the equivalent of £9 in the Philippines 14 years ago, its had 1 new battery and 4 new cases, needs another and now hard to find. Ideally a 1209 case is better as it has hard buttons not rubber. Hence the thought to update to smart. Its a bit of a Trigger's broom but all original, never gone wrong.
  14. Unless that shaft has a hole right down the center it will have a stress crack in the middle and will break soon. Classic half shaft failure twist.

  16. Are you going to have to pass a Habitual Residency Test? My friend back from the Philippines had to after 23 years out. But he needed housing benefits etc. Nationwide Building Society are very easy to get a bank account with he found. EE network works for me, via ASDA its cheaper I think. Most Libraries are able to help with re-establishing yourself in the UK.
  17. I got poisoned in the Lake District, spent a day venting from both ends continuously, seriously ill, lost a stone in weight. But then we were living off the land a bit, water from streams lightly boiled, Outward Bound course.

  20. Isuzu are or were the largest manufacturer of diesel engines. For some reason after taking a large share of the inland marine market they abandoned it completely for some reason. Their small trucks are renown as being smokers after a fair mileage. Could be the same engines?
  21. 1.5D also used in the Farina Austin Cambridge/Morris Oxford saloon. a veritable snail. 1.8D powered Sherpa vans went too well, they used to fall over on roundabouts. Never in any taxi or Land Rover.
  22. Ask Sherwin Williams in Bolton. They make the stuff and will advise you correctly sherwin-williams.com Used to be Leighs Paints before the takeover.
  23. Why have you taken it out? Do you know it is faulty? Have you tested the gauge by shorting the wires together? What was the fault with the gauge? What make is the gauge, name on the dial?
  24. I used this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-LTR-GM-GENUINE-CONCENTRATED-RED-LONGLIFE-5yr-ANTIFREEZE-20L-20-LITRE/261725471039?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 cheaper, seems OK. its not been very cold since!
  25. I've never polished a posthole, just put in post and concrete. Seriously, my bronze nav lights were clear coated 14 years ago and they are fine. Not shiny but just bronze colour which is darker than brass. How do you put the screws back in after powder coating and do you coat the screw heads? I think brass looks better left to mature but then I have very little.
