  1. Bottom cup bearing worn away? The top gland type bearing on Pipers is pretty reliable.

  4. But not as much as we worry the volunteers. There needs to be some control otherwise the loonies would take over, and they are everywhere just waiting to pounce.
  5. Oooooh, an anarchist in our midst! ?
  6. Thank you all, but I was aware of that, my choice of reading is my choice. Confusing post.
  7. They used thousands of them to cremate livestock when we had foot & mouth, they burn really well. I believe they imported new ones to burn from Sweden when stocks ran out in the UK
  8. Sorry, the relevance of that has gone over my head, please elucidate.
  9. Ah, I see because I am not allowed, unworthy, to ignore a moderator, LadyG is off the list. Does this mean I have to send a Christmas card?
  10. I have Lady G on ignore, how will that work out?
  11. pipa boat? Never heard of it. Some have a tapered joint in the rudder shaft on the top of the rudder. Some have a split shaft with bolts through the rudder. Some are welded up solid and cannot be removed unless with a gas axe. Never easy in the water.
  12. Speak to Stephany, its she who makes the decision. If the breakdown stops a boat how can it be solely a "domestic" fault? I hate it when firms wriggle to get out of their obligations. Local good electrician, Ace Electrical Services 07969 803439. Ask for Sandra.
  13. I used to employ an engineer who had been at Shotton steel works for many years. He was certain that British Steel never rolled 10mm mild steel plate. If so where did/does it come from? BS EN 10 025 is standard mild steel.
  14. Closed Saturday afternoon and Sunday but its worth staying overnight and fueling up on Monday morning, from I think 8am. Pleasant place to moor too, the services usually work as well. Turners deserve all the trade we can give them, always the lowest price on this end of the country, possible the whole country.
  15. A vote for Jabsco Par Max. 30 years use and only 1 rubber shock absorber fitted, not cheap but exceedingly good.

  17. Best is thick stainless steel pipe, not the thin shiny stuff, last much better than mild steel pipe from the chandlers, buy from steel stock holders. Cast iron also last better but hard to find now. Or you can go all modern with twin wall insulated flue which is mandatory on a new boat anyway. The jury is still out as to the merits of insulated flues, you get less heat off them.
  18. I find that more than 7 or 8 seconds on the heater makes little difference to the starting other than it pulls the battery down and reduces cranking speed slightly, especially if the battery is getting a bit tired or not fully charged.
  19. It can be flow back on the pump valves BUT the overwhelming possibility is that you do have a leak. Do make a total search of all the hot and cold pipes, fittings, taps, calorifier water heater, etc before damage is caused. Check that the pressure release valve is not dribbling. Have you checked that there is no water in the extreme rear of the bilge under the floor?
  20. If you have a non return valve on the cold into the calorifier you need another expansion vessel on the cold. Otherwise tte one on the hot is fine providing it is pumped up and serviceable. You seem to have an adjustable thermostat on the hot out, have you tried setting the temperature?
  21. Moor before the lock at the bone mill or go down to the cemetery, its lovely and quiet.
  22. Damn good point . I forgot that most have 2 alternators, impoverished by single alternator. Greenie sent.
  23. I thought the smokeless zone ruling did not apply to inland boats? We burn a 50-50 mix of anthracite and large smokeless eggs, the eggs keep the former burning slowly overnight, when stoked up the anthracite produces more heat and less ash.
