  1. Since 2009, NABO (the National Association of Boaters) has been keeping an eye on the cost of boating, so that we can build a picture of how costs are escalating. This informs us in our talks with the navigation authorities and government bodies. We are inviting all boaters to submit their costs to the 2011 NABO Cost of Boating Survey. It's helpful to gather your figures together beforehand. For details, click on this link. The report will be made available to all on the NABO website in due course.
  2. Our NASA meter has one major drawback - it is limited to recording a charge of 102 amps. Once the system is charging at 103 amps it registers a Discharge of 101 amps! So to keep its calculations below 100 amps we do not switch our Travelpower on until the original engine alternator charge is less than about 45 amps.
  3. Any chance of a scan or transcript of the whole thing?
  4. Easy to say now, you might say, but why is it that such a venture was even suggested in the current financial climate? When I first heard about it I said that this was yet another case of BW making yet another poorly judged investment decision. Could it be because the BW CEO seems to be an eternal optimist with no realist component?
  5. Maybe I'm too late, but.... On Epiphany we have a cross-bed that provides us with 6'2" x 5'. (approx 4' and 2' long mattress split). We are cc live-aboards and although I am 6'5", we find it a very comfortable bed. As suggested, loo "facilities" both sides of the bed make provide a non-climbing-over-at-night regime.
  6. So, as a BW customer, by typing in IWA20, I can get 20% off tickets? But there is no connection between IWA and BW is there? (and no form of subliminal advertising). And if I am neither a BW customer, nor an IWA member, what is there to stop me entering IWA20, I wonder?
  7. So why don't BW's Gold Licence applicants get this?
  8. Now at Gunpowder Wharf, Kidlington - topping up his diesel tomorrow. What a star he is - Thanks Dusty!
  9. Anyone know if Dusty managed to get moving - and if so how far?
  10. Have booked into a hotel in Market Drayton for Saturday night. Anyone else staying there the night?
  11. Late Arrivals at the Audlem Banter.... I can get there and back, but......... Anyone like to suggest a floor or room anywhere nearby that would provide me with somewhere to sleep for the Saturday night? A while ago there was a B&B with a vacancy (but it's a few miles away) which I may well book if there are no offers very soon. But..... here's hoping..
  12. I thought the cables under BW's towpaths were already fibre-optic?
  13. Orange customers can now access T-Mobile if they can't get an Orange signal (if T-Mobile is any better in the current location). You need to follow the instructions at: https://kareena.orange.co.uk/share/opt-in.jsp?embedded=false Here in Banbury we seem to be alternating between the two (automatically!) And T-Mobile customers can use Orange now: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/share/

  16. Try http://diesel.fibrefactory.co.uk/ as a rough guide, then ring to ask.
  17. So how do you define a lock landing? When is it OK to moor on the far end of a stretch of bollards/rings that are adjacent to a lock? In the Richlow Guide to the Chesterfield Canal (p.12) it says, "Good moorings above Shaw Lock". The only possible place this may refer to is the end of the lock landing. There is room for 2 60' narrowboats on that landing/mooring and as there are very few boats on the move on the Chesterfield Canal, it seems reasonable to moor one on the end. But I guess it's open to interpretation?
  18. There's an official update as of 3rd August on the NABO website
  19. Talking to one of the BW union officers recently, he said that BW are talking about not re-employing their paid summer lock staff, but hoping that they will volunteer to help on a rota basis in subsequent years. How can that be right? From what I know of summer lock keepers, they rely on the pay they earn as a living wage. I can't see asking them to be volunteers as being just. It doesn't put bread on their table.

  21. So will the owners be presented with the bill?
  22. Daniel said: Our piece of 3" x 2" wood is double ended - I put whichever end doesn't come to hand into the gear mechanism. This picture shows one end (the groove isn't necessary): Picture of end of C&H SPike Any of the pictures where you can see either end of the spike shows what is needed the other end, if you see what I mean. Martin, I'd be happy for you to add a link to our page on your site.

  24. We have just arrived at Stanley Ferry having completed the Huddersfield Canals and then the Calder and Hebble from Cooper Bridge to Fall Ings. We did the Calder and Hebble last year as well. Must say that the Huddersfield Narrow E locks near Aspley Basin were the first and only ones where we needed the extended windlass and we had two locks that leaked like sieves east of 32E where BW leave you to your own devices - needed to use a rope to open one top gate as the water wouldn't find a level. If you want to read our up to date C&H experiences, look at our blog from here onward. I felt no danger of breaking our spike (a plain, planed, pictured piece of 3x2 hardwood) on either cruise. It seems to me that taking everything as you find it and taking it slowly is the way to go. Plenty of people ready to talk the canals down - but patience would often have overcome their problems. I agree about flaking paint. Isn't this something that the Huddersfield Canal Society could be remedying? BTW, Martin's PennineWaterways site is invaluable!
