  1. Thanks everyone. I'll work on those ideas. (And I won't cut the red or the blue wire, Alan De Enfield!) Why it's strapped to the exhaust is another mystery, but the previous owner did have some very strange practices!
  2. I found this (part) device tied to the exhaust pipe of my Barrus 2000. It's connected to the batteries and looks as if it was headed off towards the engine. Has anyone any ideas, please?
  3. Wow! That's a lot of information! Thank you all. I'll be in conversation with the local mechanics about both jobs, and I'm much wiser now, and better able to discuss it with them. Roger
  4. If it's any help, these are the guy's words.
  5. Good point, Richard, but the guy said it would improve overall performance, and it's easy to think that that has to be possible, even if there are no obvious problems. But again, how do you quantify the performance of an old diesel engine? Yes, Brian, I'm beginning to feel that way about him now! But he doesn't say anything's bust, just that the jobs would improve performance. I just can't discover if that's likely - or even possible. How do I know if the engine's giving me its best?
  6. 42hp, I think. Thanks for the info, Richard, I couldn't find it. I take it hydraulic tappets don't need adjustment then? And what's your thoughts about the injectors, please? Roger
  7. Barrus 2000. I wouldn't say it's particularly smoky, but that's a very difficult thing to quantify. Others may say it is.
  8. I'm so sorry! I didn't know that there had been any replies to this - I got no notification. Thanks for the advice. The problem has been solved, but I'll remember what you've suggested should it happen again. The guy I paid to solve the problem had a hell of a job! I don't think he knew your solution!
  9. I've been told by a boat mechanic that I should have the boat's tappets adjusted, and the fuel injectors "checked" (Barrus engine). Another mechanic says the tappets do not feature on the makers' service schedule, and that injectors don't need to be checked unless they fail in some way. Can anyone help me here, please?
  10. Thanks very much for all of the help, gentlemen! I'm forwarding your thoughts to the guys who started the job! Roger
  11. Since our Barrus 2000 overheated because of a split pipe between the skin tank and the calorifier, the water heated by the engine isn't getting to the calorifier. The whole system was flushed through and refilled when the split pipe was replaced. The guy who did that job has been back to see if the problem is an air-lock. He did shift a small amount of air from the system, but believes now that there is no more. The header tank remains full when the engine is run. The skin tank likewise. Can anyone here think of anything that we might have missed, please?
