  1. So, just received this after enquiring about opening times this morning. It appears CRT are ending the winter opening hours on Thursday 28th March 2024 and opening the locks from 9am to 5pm with last passage at 4.30pm over the Easter Holiday. Then summer opening hours as below.

Plus, Vale Royal Lock appears to be open again. Can anyone confirm this?

    Updates

    29/02/2024 13:54

Please be advised navigation remains restricted at Vale Royal Lock on the Weaver Navigation due to an operational fault with the swing bridge.

Our engineering teams are in continued talks with specialist contractors and exploring various options available for the repair.

Whilst our teams continue to establish a method of repair, we are now able to offer prearranged passages to boats that fit within both of the following measurements:

    • Boats must have a max length of 10.3m or less.
    • Boats must have an air draft of 3.6m or less.

Bookings are available to book via your online Canal & River Trust licensing account

  3. I used Elite Furnishings in Tamworth 3 years ago and they were excellent. Came to the boat while down south and measured up, plus brought all the colour samples. Had L-shaped sofabed made to measure and very happy with it, comfortable as a sofa and as a bed, my parents prefer it to the bed.

  4. And there's been an update now due to problems with Lock 68 the whole flight has closed. They're planning to to do that and the lock 69 repairs over the next 3 weeks.

    Notice Alert

    Leeds & Liverpool Canal

Location: Navigation Closure: Wigan Flight, Leeds & Liverpool Canal

Starts At: Lock 65, Top Lock

Ends At: Lock 85, Lock 21

Wednesday 14 June 2023 09:00 until further notice

    Type: Navigation Closure

    Reason: Repair

    Update on 15/06/2023:

Our contractors will be onsite at Lock 68 along the Wigan Flight early next week to set up the fabric dams and scaffolding to repair the blown cill. Following this, our team will be onsite to start the repairs.

Whilst the Wigan Flight is closed to repair Lock 68, we have taken this opportunity to carry out the planned works to repair Lock 69 at the same time to minimise disruption to our customers.

We anticipate these repair works will take 3 weeks to complete.

An update on progress made will be provided by Tuesday 27 June.

PS if this is now the case, it might be worth changing the title of this thread to reflect that the Lock Flight has already closed.

We can confirm every electric swing bridge between Leeds and Skipton has the panel on the Towpath side.  Some of the manual bridges were easy to swing but a few were stiff and one, just to the east of Silsden, took two of us to swing just enough to get a narrowboat through.

    I know that one!

The most annoying ones are those with electric barriers and lights, but swung manually, both from the offside. With no offside landings...

  6. This is a ridiculous proposal. There isn't a problem with moorings in Central Birmingham. I've been through on several occasions in the last few years and never found it overcrowded. Being able to reliably find secure visitor moorings in the city centre makes it possible to visit Birmingham. This change, so that you have to moor beyond Vincent Road, makes it less feasible, I wouldn't moor there. Knowing there are only more limited moorings in quieter areas out of sight makes me less confident about visiting. Its a bad move and unnecessary in my opinion.

    Update on 12/10/2022:

Due to recent improvements in the water levels within Winterburn & Slipper Hill Reservoirs, which feed the Leeds & Liverpool canal, we are now in a position to resume navigation with operating times from Lock 1, Leeds to Lock 85, Wigan from Monday 17 October. This week, our local teams will recharge the pounds along the lock flights and ensure the locks are ready for reopening.

The canal will remain open for a period of 2 weeks to give customers an opportunity to return to moorings for the winter, closing again on Monday 31 October, with last passage on Sunday 30 October. This is subject to the weather over the next 2 weeks, and if we are in a position to extend the opening period, further updates will be provided.

From Monday 17 October, the following lock flights will be open from 10am to 4pm, daily:

    North West:

    • Wigan Flight (65 to 85). Last passage at 12pm.
    • Johnsons Hillock Lock Flight (58 to 64). Last passage at 2:30pm.
    • Blackburn Lock Flight (52 to 57). Last passage at 2:30pm.
    • Barrowford Lock Flight (45 to 51).  Last passage at 2:30pm.
    • Greenberfield Lock Flight (42 to 44).  Last passage at 3pm.

Poolstock Locks 1 & 2, Leigh Branch and Lock 86 on the Leeds & Liverpool canal will remain open to prebooked passages only, you can see more about this here:

    Yorkshire & North East:

    • Bank Newton Locks (36 to 41) Last passage at 3pm.
    • Gargrave (Holme Bridge Lock 30) Last passage at 3pm.

Navigation through Bingley 3 & 5 Locks, and Newlay, Forge & Kirkstall will resume on Friday 14 October as per the following opening times:

    Bingley Three & Five Rise:

    Morning:

    • Passages down the lock flights between 08:00-10:00, last entry at 09:00.
    • Passages up the lock flights between 10:00-12:00, last entry at 11:00.

    Afternoon:

    • Passages down the lock flight between 13:00-15:00, last entry at 14:00.
    • Passage up the lock flight at 15:00, only due to reduced daylight hours.

    Newlay, Forge & Kirkstall:

    • Locks will be available for self-operation between the hours of 08:00 and 15:00 daily. However, there will be roving lock keepers between Leeds & Newlay to offer assistance through the locks if required.

Lock 1, Leeds to Lock 6 will be open for passage without restriction.

Should customers find themselves approaching an empty pound during this navigational window, please contact our North West or Yorkshire & North East Customer Support Teams for assistance on 0303 040 4040, selecting the relevant region.

  8. I got this in response to a query to CRT customer services. Hopefully they will reopen sections on a case by case basis, as and when the situation improves.

"Our team are monitoring the situation closely and will reopen the canals as soon as water levels are high enough. We will likely be looking to open them in stages so boaters can resume movement but this will depend on rainfall across the area and I'm afraid our team are not able to say which sections will be opening first."

  9. As above and as notified by CRT.  Don't know how long it's for, if anyone has any further information it would be appreciated.

    Update on 15/08/2022:

we have reviewed the notice below and can confirm this remains the plan

    Original message:

This notice is to allow time for boaters to leave the restricted area before Monday evening. Customers are asked to avoid the area were possible to maintain levels, allowing time for those affected to leave the area.

  10. I've done the Llangollen a few times at different times of year, including Easter smd summer, and touchwood don't seem to have had the problems you often hear about. Slight wait once at New Marton locks and Grindley Brook, but not more than half an hour. The narrows to Llangollen you have go slowly for and require a bit of concentration but done them 4 times each way and not really had any problems. Also done Montgomery twice and think it's lovely,  plus you get a few locks and the Navigation Inn at Maesbury was quite nice. There's also a pub at Queens Head of you want to break the return/outward journey.

I'd go for what you want to do. Within the space of a week I think it's easily achievable. I've met other boaters who would do much more. As others have said you need to book Frankton Locks onto and off the Montgomery, pretty easy to do online.

    Fantastic to watch.

We went to a van festival earlier in the year at Elvington Airfield. They have a strict no noise after 10pm policy due to neighbouring property.

So after 10pm it was a silent disco.

They had 3 different djs playing completely different music depending which head sets were on which person.

We sat and watched at the bar for a good hour or so. It was so funny to watch 🤣🤣🤣

They have the same no noise policy on some beaches in Goa snd run silent discos. Seems pretty successful.
