  1. Hey so im thinking of getting a project 31 in the future. However its airdraft is about 8 ft. The K and A has many bridges that are 7 and a half foot. So I was thinking could I traverse the K and A by putting a load of bricks into the back and weigh it down by about a foot. This type of boat is fairly high in the water and id like to have a nice size boat with the ability to go to europe but still have some options back in the uk.
  2. Ok thanks for this advice it doesn't seam like anything I can afford will be mych of an upgrade. My current boat is having a cabin built on the middle section. I might see if I can sort the layout out in a way that makes me comfortable and then sort out the gas/water and leeks. Current boat is 27ft x 7ft amd is a center cockpit norman cruiser. If anyone lives on something like this id like advise as to how I could make it livable.
  3. I plan to live around london, Im borroriing the money off my dad and he thinks that in london the boats get knocked around a lot so a steel boat will last longer. My plan is to live on my boat full time and constant cruise between hackney and brentford. Am I being unfair towards GRP because of a bad experience i've had with my previos boat? Heres the GRP boat im interested in. Is there anything I can do to convince my dad that GRP boat is suitable for living on if its built well?   4. what do people tgink of the grp widebeam? Its thick grp but still fibreglass isnt as strong as steel.
  5. I also found a NB its only 26ft tho.   6. I have been moving a boat around for about a year, my current boat is a norman 27 grp, its cold, it leeks. I moved back into a squat over winter. I want something thats livable. Also I found this steel cruiser, how is life on then compared to narrowboats?   7. Hello so im tginking of getting a dutch cruiser. Problem is most have an airdraft of about 7-8 ft which means I cant get through the tunnels.   8. Thanks for your help people. Also in regards to charging my leisure batteries. I have heard that they charge slowly after a certain percentage (think it starts at 50% and gets mega slow after 80%). So should I charge them all the way to 100% or could I get away with charging them up to 80% and discharging them to say 30% rinse and repeat or do I have to keep them at 100% to avoid damaging them. I imagine its a lot cheaper to keep them between 30% and 80% as they will charge at the rated ampage of the charger.
  9. Hey so I had a look at my genny yesterday and found that it is a 850W petrol frame type. My battery bank is 450AH and im thinking of getting a 50amp charger. Have I done my maths correct? 50 amp charger X 12v = 600W 850W *0.75 (3/4 load) = 637.5W
  10. My engine is an outboard petrol 15hp also came with a little camping generator. In regards to petrol not being effecient do small diesel ones exist. Iv only been able to find ones at about 4KWs, to make that effeciant at 1/2 load I would need 2000W of charger which would be a 160 AMP charger meaning a battery bank of 1600 amp hours (Not even sure I could fit that ammount of batteries on my boat)
  11. Right so I have 6 75 ah batteries. I also have an 8 amp charger (8X12v = 96W), my generator is about 1kw I think. Would it be better to get 5 more of these chargers and some extension leads and charge up all 6 at the same time (96W X 6 = 576 so roughly half load). Or would I be better off charging them one by one?
  12. Charge batteries up with a 3 pin battery charger into the generator as apposed to plugging the laptop and other things i am going to be using into the generator.
  13. How much am I looking at roughly to run a petrol genny? I assume its best to use it to charge up batteries instead of running things directly?
  14. So will I need to use a generator in the winter or is there a source of free energy in the winter?
  15. Also practically speaking how much solar do I need, I live in london, uk and our sunlight is terrible especially in winter. I want to run my laptop mainly that is 120w as well as possibly a small fridge. How much power do you tend to get out of your panels on a cloudy horrible day? Is it about 50% or more like 10%? Wondering if 500W is going to be enough in winter for Laptop x2: 120W + 60W Lighting: 60W lamp Total power: 240W 500W inverter (Probabably 100W as I heard inverters are roughly 20%) Battery bank 6X 75AH
