  1. Has anyone cruised the Queen Elizabeth Park? It was supposed to be open to boats last year, and I wondered if this had happened. If so, any tips? Mary
  2. A friend lived on a boat in Cambridge many years ago. They used to take out the pin, move it a couple of feet and put it back in!
  3. Yes, as cc'er I have had one by email and one by post in the past couple of days. You'd think they'd only do the email to save the cost of the letter, but at least they're sure I've been informed!
  4. And there are an enormous number of flats within a couple of hundred yards already. An old wharf has recently been transformed along with old warehouses and factories. This is one of the very few older buildings left - off the Lea Bridge Road next to the River Lea.
  5. I've been past Great Haywood on many an occasion, and never seen that. I had some work done there too, and they are a most helpful bunch of people.
  6. Yesterday the top end of the arm was pretty empty of water, but this morning the nice CRT chaps came and filled it back up!
  7. I loved the one on the Lea, as we intend to do that soon. My daughter was a member of that rowing club - the hours she spent doing circuits in that gym doesn't bear thinking about!
  8. Staffs and Warks or the Stratford Canals, or the River Soar. When's the birthday?
  9. Just a thought... You've just put your boat name and position on a public forum, and hinted that you're leaving it. If you're worried about theft, this isn't wise in my opinion. I need to leave my boat on occasions, and yes I think you're better near other boats. Just to add, I've had a full gas bottle taken from my boat at Lapworth, some years ago, when I was away cycling for charity!!! Must have been a boater that time too I reckon. Good luck.
  10. I must say, I have known at least 3 boats repaired to a good standard by Onionbargee's "incompetent" welder. One of their family does live on a boat there. At least one of the ladies in the shop (both of which are helpful in my experience) lives on a boat. Also, just a guess as I haven't been around there for a while now, but if it's raining, and there has been a lot recently, it isn't good practice to use electrical welding equipment. Partly as the job isn't as good, but also that the welder would be in danger. Water and electricity don't mix!. It's not a beautiful place. The toilets etc are no worse than some camp sites I've been too (although I can't vouch for the gents!)
  11. Agreed. Mine (Waterbug) has a keel of about 6 inches wide for about 3/4 of it's length, but I wouldn't want to try to balance the boat on it when out of the water! The hull is generally V shaped.
  12. My boat was close to that lock then, and the enforcement chap asked me to move back to Shardlow, as he thought my boat would be soon under water there. He was right, and you told me at one point it was not far below the top of the flood gates. Glad I moved when I did. It took so long to go down! Mary
  13. I insure with Saga, they wanted one as the boat is 25 and (spoken in hushed tones by the lady on the phone) a Springer. Other people I approached wanted a survey to insure, so I stayed with Saga, and they say they never want another one!
  14. So sorry to hear the news Jon. Mary
  15. Any news Jon? My contact at Grove Lock Marina is putting the word round there. Mary
  16. Jon, just thought, he may have trotted back to where I first met you if he got disorientated by the dark. Go up there and ask too.
  17. Hi Jon, So sorry to hear he's missing. There are quite a few houses up the lane, have you asked all of them? I agree the cars do rush along the B road. Ask if you can put a notice up at Grove Lock Marina, and Grove Lock pub. I know someone in the marina - I'll ask her. All the best! Mary
  18. As the mother of a rower, who has rowed many times on both pieces of water, Dorney is far better to row on. Holme Pierrepont is very windy - too windy to become an airfield which was one of the options apparently, so it's fine for sailing, but one one occasion the water was so choppy due to the wind, that rowing boats were sinking. That wouldn't have been great in the Olympics! Races are sometimes won there due to the lane raced on being more or less affected by the wind direction! When milliseconds count, this could make or break a result!
  19. I've parked there several times, sometimes for a couple of days. No problem, and no charge.
  20. I do the same after it's been windy, obviously windfall wood. We are near lots of London Plane trees, and it's great wood to burn.
  21. Saga would not re insure my boat unless a survey was undertaken, and thereby the boat deemed to be safe. This was because it was 25 years old. i have phoned around, and most boat insurers want a survey at 25 years, or when first insured by them.
  22. I don't see why. I live in a house, but use my boat at least once a week, and yes I CC. I sometimes have a 3 hour drive to the boat, but at the moment it's only an hour. I have travelled about half the system so far, some of it twice. My grown up children also use the boat. Do you think house dwellers should be banned from using their boats to CC? Why should I have a home mooring that I would never use? Out and back over the same bit of water every week would soon become tedious! Also, I have to leave it on the cut. it's too big to put in the car and take it home!
  23. There were many in the lakes in Vicky Park in London, and they attacked the ducklings and goslings until there were very few waterfowl at all. They grabbed the little'uns and dragged them under. It wasn't uncommon to see at least 10 basking on logs in the sun. However, they drained the lake and moved them out!
