  1. At least two of the boats in Crooke Hall marina are owned by good friends of mine. I'm pretty sure they would be more than happy to discuss this with you.
  2. They have been padlocked for three years now to stop the ingress of floating pennywort. The leakage into the cellar used to occur if the lock was left full but grouting of the lock chamber and lock landings early this year resolved that.
  3. I'm sorry to have to tell you this but the sentence in bold is pure fantasy and the second one is mostly so.
  4. Wigan Flight, open 10am daily. Why not 8am I don;t know. Last entry 12pm. Padlocked closed at 4pm. Safe moorings recommended Plank Lane Bridge to Pennington Flash, many towpath users mean the moorings are pretty safe.
  5. So you were assaulted with a windlass and didn't report it? I don't believe it actually happened.
  6. We'll see if I have a similar experience then. Two separate articles claimed that the L&L was now closed for winter which I pointed out was wrong but the latest CaRT update says repairs have gone well and the canal should be reopened this Friday. I don't expect to be mentioned in dispatches.
  7. Funnily enough I was cycling through Wigan his afternoon and there was a cruiser in lock 1 with men on the headgates. I asked the one on the towpath side if all four paddles were up and he nodded the affirmative. I then had a pleasant chat to the helmswoman who told me they had just bought the boat and were taking it up to Scarisbrick Marina. The guys on the gates were straining a bit on the gates so I asked the one on the offside if the ground paddle was up, there being no indicator on it. The paddle wasn't up, he lifted it and the gates opened in about another minute.
  8. Good question. CaRT have had phone calls from boaters "stuck" at lock 1 with only one side paddles open.
  9. Lock 1, Leigh Branch of Leeds and Liverpool. If all four head paddles aren't used you will sit there for hours draining the pound above you.
  10. Some locks don't operate in the way you would hope/expect them to.
  11. The photograph shows firemen working in daylight.
  12. I'll be very interested to see how this work progresses. The original February stoppage had dates of 13th Feb to 16th June. Protests were made on behalf of the Leigh members of Worsley Cruising Club reminding the Canal Company that a rally organised by Worsley for the Federation of clubs on the Bridgewater had been arranged for May Bank Holday weekend, had been planned for a year with the Company's knowledge but would be inaccessible to them. Miraculously the end date was then brought forward to 24th May shaving three weeks off the project. They didn't actually begin until 20th February losing another week. I can't see the canal being drained at all really, I would think the foundations will be a distance from the banks similar to the bridge at Leigh for the bypass. The plans by Peel Holdings are for housing south of the canal so will need to be able to carry heavy machinery and haulage.
