  1. Yesterday I heard a loud shout and a large splash. Looked up and on other side of canal where a man and a boy had been feeding ducks to see a small head pop up above the water and the man immediately sliding into the canal and throwing the child onto the towing path. Two teenage girls were walking along the path and were right at the spot when the two went in the canal, I was relieved to see there were two people on the scene to help but as I hurried to the bridge to go over to try to help also, I was amazed to see the two girls carry on walking with hardly a glance as on his second attempt the man managed to push the boy further onto the path at their feet and then struggle to get himself out onto the wet grass bank. Faith in human nature was restored however as people suddenly appeared from all directions, one man jumping off a boat to help. The wet pair were taken to a nearby business to dry out and warm up as offerings of towels and warm drinks came from different directions. It all ended well but what an insight into human nature.

  3. But what ARE the tiers? - When they were imposed we were told they would be reviewed on 16th December. Did that happen? If so, where do we find the results?

  5. Which plywood is best for covering a cabin side? I bought what was called Marine Ply a few years ago and it has delaminated despite being treated back, front and sides with PVA.

  7. Local Fact One No boater in their right mind would PAY to moor here AND CURRENTLY NONE DOES. Those that fell for it in the past have quickly given it up because of : the comings and goings to the boat village just round the bend - the strong constant stink of cannabis smoke - being immediately beside the "Picnic Area" so loved of the night-time revellers - boaters exiting and entering the locks using your boat as a temporary quayside or for ramming practice - not to mention the fact that your boat can not moor close to the side due to large Oxford Stones that many years ago all fell out of the wall and onto the canal bottom. Local Fact Two Yes indeed, the CRT mooring bods (who of course know nothing about the locality) are asking multiple1000nds of pounds for a permit to moor there. Local Fact Three That boat in the picture is DEFINITELY NOT a new one waiting to be registered. (But hey, if you want to post unfounded supposition on here as definite fact , then fill yer wotsits............................
  8. SORRY TO GO ON ABOUT IT BUT THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THIS SIGN AND THE ATTITUDE BEHIND IT THAT I FIND UPSETTING This is the sign I referred too. What do you mean - you can't see it? Imagine getting desperate for an overnight mooring at dusk with the trees in full leaf. They could of course have put the sign in full unobstructed view but chose not to. The boat, by the way is not one of the scruffy ones - they are just around the bend. But it is interesting to note that it has absolutely nothing to identify it. This is what the sign says Close up of the enforcement company
  9. So sorry to use this forum to "complain" but unlike your assumption, absolutely SFA is being done to move Detritus Village which is growing by the day and now includes a large dirty "furnished tent" beside the towing path net to one of the boats. As for the sign - Yes it is CRT approved and very official but I did not read it all as it is a lot of words.
  10. I have just been for a walk in the lovely sunshine along the towing path below Hillmorton Locks. I found a new sign saying that those who moor there will be charged an amazing £150 PER DAY which will be imposed by a private contractor. Although I do not want to moor there, (and even if I did, I would not want to be anywhere near the scruffy boat village detritus spreading all over the towpath at that point) I did find this type of creeping management by threat from a faceless private company, did nothing to make me feel good walking by the water. And then I had mud splashed up my leg by a passing cyclist!
  11. Having hung around the kitchen of the Dalston one many decades ago, I witnessed that the green part of the liquer could be parsley but any green-leafed vegetable would also do. The liquid was made in a huge couldron by melting beef dripping, mixing in flour, then adding stock made in another huge pot from the beef bones that had provided the meat for the pie. They didn;t do jellied eels but I understood that all of the liquid that the eels were cooked in was reduced down and left to set as the jelly so is it is unlikely there was any left to also make large pots of liquer. Of course - each shop had their own way of doing things. The only essential ingredient for any proper Pie and Mash Shop is the beautiful dark green wall tiles.
  12. Even Tubby Isaacs stall is now history....................
  13. There used to be a great pie and mash shop at Dalston Junction where the two son's baked their own pies at night and then each towed their own power boats, that they kept out the back of the premises, to the sea in the early morning.
  14. If billybobbooth is still on here - he can tell you. Or ask Redshaws of Braunston. Or see the manual I have just sent you (assuming the forum rules allow you to receive it after 2 posts. If not - bang in a few more replies. Sorry - the Manual file was too big to be allowed and it won't accept pdf files anyway. I have sent you my email address so I can attach it to a reply.
  15. I wish they would make, and enforce rules, rather than use "could" and "should". There seem to be an awefull lot of boats going past us on "essential" journeys.
  16. I was just highlighting another obvious discrepancy in the "photo" in that a Large Woolwich would not get through the locks to reach the place depicted. I would still be interested to hear from anyone who did manage to get a FULL LENGTH large Woolwich in a southerly direction down the South Stratford, in recent years.
  17. Talk about wandering off the subject. Is the poor bloke still sleeping in a car.?
  18. Forgive me that I don't know your boat - what Large Woolwich was it please?
  19. When did the last Town class Woolwich to get through even the first three locks going South on the South Stratford? And what boat was it please?
  20. You would be very very lucky to get one boat like that through the poorly maintained very tight locks on the South Stratford, let alone two.
  21. Can I just add that the curry stained recipe was good but you won't get "Authentic" unless you bubble the equivalent to a mulligatawny soup for a couple of days t use as the stock. AND no Indian restaurant chef would stir in yoghurt for 5 minutes to ensure it did not split. They would have a stock of yoghurt that had had Cornflour mixed and gently heated which, when added, SHOULD not split at all.
  22. He didn't claim it was the Falkirk Wheel but that his model was inspired by it
  23. Can you tell us where your boat is? - perhaps someone on here could have a look and advise.
