  1. IRONIC REALLY While this forum carries on having a go at volunteer lock-keepers, I can report that a few minutes ago, a boater who insisted on working the locks at Hillmorton himself, slipped and fell into the lock and went under his boat but thankfully was pulled out by the lady volunteer lock-keeper whom, I assume was the target of the OP in this thread. The boater survived and has been taken to hospital with a broken collar bone. Police praised her actions. The other volunteer lock-keepers who are at the locks raising money for MacMillan Nurses, took care of his boat and moored it safely. Perhaps the OP would like to make a donation.
  2. End of??? Oh how we wish it was - but you will keep repeating this fairy tale, over and over and over...……………………...
  3. Can that boat really be only 12 years old!! Must have had a tough life.
  4. Or, indeed, a higher percentage of all whingers at all locks?
  5. You don't have to do that though do you? - or haven't you noticed that all of them are suddenly busy elsewhere when you turn up. As more boats go through Hillmorton Locks than anywhere else in the country, they will of course get a higher percentage of whingers than at other locks.
  6. A very fine piece of informative writing. So why do we put up with being sold rubbish diesel fuel that ruins the old engines when the proper fuel for which they were designed is available?
  7. Thanks for the tips people. Decisions Decisions!!
  8. Having bought various torches that didn't last long or started flickering five minutes after guarantee ran out, or just were not powerful enough or needed charging at the vital moment, mid tunnel etc, can you all please suggest what type would be best.
  9. So what we see in the picture is against the law, but when the relevant authorities (which in this case are CRT on whose property the offence is being committed and the police who apparently paid a visit to the boat but did nothing much at all) condone it and take no action, then what other laws of this land is it OK to ignore?
  10. Unfortunately its a bit late for you to tell H&W that they were wrong.
  11. According to Harland and Wolff, boats with a National 2DM had a Brunton 2:1 reduction gearbox and a 24/17 prop
  12. I'm beginning to think there are two different couples operating Corona.
  13. Whoever it is, they are contenders for the rudest, most bad humoured boaters on the system. Whatever you do, don't give them a hearty hello and mention the previous lovely owner...………………………...
  14. Thankyou, I love that simple little song. But be careful, it gets stuck in your head. (I knew someone on here would have the answer - I emailed their agent to ask but no reply yet).
  15. Never mind all this other stuff on here - this is far more important. In their latest song, Chas and Dave sing about fishing in the canal. Chas's Pal caught "gudgin" but in the next line, what did Chas usually cetch? It should rhyme wiv "week".
  16. Absolutely agree. I went into Wickes to buy one replacement blow lamp gas cylinder and each customer in front of me in the checkout queue got the same utterance from the young female on duty "youriiiiiyte - doyer wanna add 50p to your bill for xxxxx charity"? Each customer said NO.
  17. But when CRT send me their demand for the four figure licence renewal, I shall so send them that quote by return.
  18. But that nice Mr Leighton is on the CRT website right now proclaiming " Eight million people live within 1km of our canals and the best thing about them, in my opinion, is they’re free for everyone to use and enjoy". So unless he includes boaters in "everyone", then he must mean that we can use and enjoy the eight million people for free!?
  19. So we can assume from all that moaning that you have no intention of assisting this seemingly worthwhile information gathering, just in case it may hit home with CRT. I have already volunteered to submit some relevant info and I know personally IWA Officers who not only definitely do not have the attitude toward live-aboard boater that you describe but also actually have, and do, live-aboard themselves.
  20. Well being as how I don't feel any happier and healthier today, is the new branding not working?
  21. I assume the bald, unshaven, scary man is representing Canal and River Trust when he states :- "Eight million people live within 1km of our canals and the best thing about them, in my opinion, is they're free for everyone to use and enjoy". That must mean that nobody has to pay for a boat licence or for a mooring any more!
  22. Andy - I wish I had the answer for the bad times you have, and are, experiencing but from what you wrote here you are obviously a good and brave person and has done a great deal for the boating community in general and lovers of old boats particularly. Try not to give in to the blackness and do trust that it could get better.
