  2. I'm not reluctant I just have better things to do with my time, they are commonly used phases easily found and you are an intelligent man who is perfect capable of working these things out for your self; as for anything being noted I'm not sure that I care whether it has been or not or what relevance your notes have to me.
  3. If you put "gaslighting meaning" into the internet search engine of your choice and then separately do the same thing for "gatekeeping" you will easily find the explanation you're looking for. No - but but if you really have never head of the term then you are better to find the explanation for your self rather than have me try to explain it to you, plus Danish Oil and my MacBook and/or iPhone are not compatible so I'll leave to to it so I can get on with what I'm doing.
  4. I didn't, did I. That is it in comprehensible English. Just because you haven't come across those expressions don't mean they don't exist or aren't well known and understood. She posted posts stating that she was posting in the context that she was a she.
  5. I think this thread was just the last straw, she has had some bullying and some members have followed her round the forum to be deliberately not very nice; our resident psychopath did his usual gaslighting and gatekeeping routine on her, though she handled him quite well. Because there was a little group that did seem to see winding her up as good sport (ranging from petty and snide to down right uncalled for) this may have lead her to be slightly more defensive in other conversations were she might not otherwise have been, which in turn compounded the problem, as often happens. I can't say we were friends, but it's always a shame when the forum becomes a little less diverse.

  9. I came across this the other day but it's probbly more for the newly initiated - well it is, but worth a peek and a link for anybody thinking of exploring these sorts of avenues. https://plainenglishfinance.co.uk
  10. The Week/MoneyWeek can be interesting but you have to tip toe through a fair whack of waffle sometimes, never thought I'd see a narrowboat in their investment section though. Ms Merida's other by line for today is about a Sunseeker Hawk 38 so she's going for a very boaty valentines. https://moneyweek.com/spending-it/toys/600809/sunseekers-alarmingly-rapid-superboat
  11. Blimey, there's a blast from the past. Being an outdoorsy gurl both by leisure and profession I used to see (and use) these quite a lot, thankfully you hardly see them any more, they were such a footer, and have probbly gone the way of the lorrymans wrench (or hitch depending what part of the country you hail from). They may be a footer but they are easy to do to the point where you can do them by feel so as easy to tie in the dark as in the day, and you're right they can be done from both sides, and if you can get the tension right can be undone quickly by running your hand up between the two sheets. You used to get them on covers for lorries and trailers where the loops were slightly elasticated and secured at the bottom by hooking the bottom lace/loop over an anchor point of some sort, the elastic allowed you to pull the whole thing tighter making it less prone to trouble from the wind; but of course the elastic didn't last for ever. If I was fitting one I wouldn't be using a knot at the bottom, I would have the last lace elastic so I could easily pull it over on and off a hook but my experience is that the wind will always find a way to get in about this kind of tie method so it needs to be really well made with a good over flap, the correct length laces, and the last lace really tightly secured or you just give the wind something to play with which will eventually cause damage. I wouldn't say this method is any more robust than a really good zip but possibly for different reasons; I'm not trying to sound like a rain cloud but unlike with a zip every one of those laces has the potential to provide the wind with a little pocket to get in and buffet around, so can work well if made well but can can also get trashed pretty quickly in bad weather if not. I think they look really nice cos I like things like that but on a more practical note the rope laces may have the potential to out live a zip but the stitching of the seams would need to be extra secure, a sturdy over flap thingy (I'm not sure what you actually call them) that maybe also had heavy duty snap fasteners or velcro and either a good anchor point for the bottom lace/loop or don't make it a loop so that you can tie it in a better more secure way, would be my suggestions. Sorry that's a bit rambly
  12. When you're thinking about the domestic / marine wind generator then it's not so must high winds or winds speed that you need to take into consideration it's the quality of wind you might get at your mooring. Wind turbines and generator only work at their optimum efficiency when they are powered by smooth air flow, which is why the big wind farm are up the side of hills, out at sea or wide open spaces, rather than urban or wooded areas. They type of wind generator that you would be considering are the type that work well on yachts because they are mounted up a mast and the air flow is undisturbed, this unfortunately is less likely to happen on a canal; that's not to say that it can't happen but it is definitely something you have to take into account. The marine generators that you can get these days are very much quieter that they used to be and can be quite handy if you can get them set up in the environment that they like best. I strongly recommend that if you want to research these little beasties that you look to yachting videos on YouTube but that you also look into how quality of wind flow will effect whether or not a wind generator will work for you in the places that you tend to moor. Rutland and Silentwind are two that I know of but there are defiantly more available.
  13. It looks like a really fun job to have but I suspect it's much more difficult than it looks.

That's the crux of human nature, innit.

    VNC

Actually I'm too tired to try and find the stuff I need to find to be able to work out what it is I need to do to make it legible. I can't help thinking it would have been easier to just get rid of the politics section rather than go through all this hoohah. It's not like we need it any more anyway. I seem to have the whole of this thread but all jumbled up on the VNC - which now seems to not be the VNC anymore. Funny stuff software, innit. But I can see that people have posted screen shots, so I guess that the answers to how you fix it, but I can't make them make much sense just now.

Why is the VNC full of stuff on the VNC? Why's it all gone weird?
  18. Yes Please don't make me listen to it again. I noticed that, so far I'm good with David bowie and the Dubliners, but I haven't got to the end so I may recognise some more yet.

  20. I'm not saying that 70s stuff doesn't get played or covered or that some of it's not good, but I think you and I are going to different music clubs/pubs and definitely on different nights cos I had to go look up what freebird was and can say that I don't ever remember that being played in a pub; as for elvis impersonations they're just a little too cringy for me.

  22. I think that could be said of every decade, it's just that you notice the 70s cos that was 'your' decade. Has there ever been a decade where someone didn't release a cover of the 50s hit I Put A Spell On You.
