  1. thank you Richard i will go back to looking at 2kw ones. cheers
  2. i understand the the float time , the last few percents of charge will take hours but say to reach 80%, would running the generator on eco do it ?
  3. Alan De Enfield, after reading the edit on your kind reply , i suspect that the leisure batteries can just as adequately be charged with the generator set to eco mode ?
  4. Richard 10002, i am not on the boat right now and ashamed to say i do not know , i know its a long rectangle device , sorry for my ignorance right now, thank you nightwatch, i have considered the honda but the price doesn't justify the amount of times i will actually use it , if you see what i mean, rather spend that amount on other things, thank you though
  5. ok i think i get it , i will check all specifications and decide then , no point rushing these things, Mr De Enfield you are a star.
  6. Thank you so much for the reply, we are very considerate boaters and understand all the etiquette so no worries , also thanks for the safety tips, all understood, while we are on this subject do you think a 2000kw or 2200kw model charge my batteries in the same way and time or would a 3000 as mentioned before be better, thanks again Mr De Enfield. happy easter too.
  7. hello all you wonderful people, i am not a liveaboard and have my 46ft narrowboat in a marina ,but visit at least twice every ten days, i have no access to shoreline but wired for it , i had the pleasure of using shoreline last month while blacking it and finally got to fully charge my two new 110ah agm leisure batteries via a sterling battery charger, it took around 7-8 hours for the float charge to finish but well worth it , since then i have had to recharge them running the engine, sometimes in idle which i believe isn't good for my barrus shire 1200. for those reasons and maybe using the vacuum on occasions i have decided to buy a Hyundai HY3000SI Generator inverter or something similar, it comes with 13 to 16 amp caravan adaptor leads , now , does that mean i can plug it in to where i would plug in the shoreline and let the sterling battery charger do the rest or would i have to charge each leisure battery individually , sorry for my ignorance but electricity is not my strong point, any info is of great help, thank you very much and happy boating.
  8. WELL SHE'S HOME IN HAREFIELD. MADE IT CROSS THE THAMES FINE , THE ONLY HICCUP WAS, 2 LOCKS BEFORE BULLS BRIDGE WE HAD A DUVET VERY TIGHTLY WRAPPED ROUND OUR PROP , IT ACTUALLY STOPPED THE ENGINE AND TOOK ALMOST 3 HOURS TO REMOVE USING A STANLEY BLADE, A SHARP KITCHEN KNIFE, A SAW AND A SICKLE WHICH A FELLOW BOATER ADVISED US TO USE, BUT I SUPPOSE IT WAS A GOOD LEARNING CURVE, THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THE CONSTRUCTIVE AND WIITY COMMENTS. HAPPY CRUISING
  9. Thank you all for all your suggestions and replies , we are buying the boat on sunday and will consider all points , we have a secure mooring for the next 3 months to size everything up, i will let you all know how we got on and what we will decide to do , thank you all again.
  10. thanks, i'll talk to a few helmsmen and see what they suggest there is also the case of balancing time off work etc,
  11. thank you neil2, i'm beginning to change my mind slightly, i will look at the map again, i thought i would have to take it east all the way to Brentford, join the brent river then the G.U , never thought of the oxford canal, and the thames is calmer towards oxford, will give it some serious thought now , that's great stuff Neil2 , thanks again
  12. thank you Rich M, cupboards are the least of my worries really but there must also be a few charlatans out there , would they be insured ? my policy does not cover the thames i dont think, it is a category D vessel after all, maybe i'm just been over cautious but the idea of loosing the boat on our first long cruise shivers me timbers to be honest , i will for sure investigate the option though, thank you
  13. THANK YOU DITCHCRAWLER, BUT I SIMPLY WONT RISK MY LIFE SAVINGS ON THE THAMES, ALSO WORRIED OF THE WASH CREATED BY BIG BOATS WHICH ARE COMMON ON THE THAMES. SO ALTHOUGH MORE EXPENSIVE I'D RATHER PLAY IT SAFER, THANKS FOR THE INPUT THOUGH
  14. Thank you very much Alan de Enfield, i am trying to fill in a boat transportation form,i may have to move the boat from the reading area to the grand union but it involves navigating the thames for quite a stretch and i am not confident enough to do it so may move it by land, thank you for your advice.
  15. hello all, i am in the process of buying a 46ft fully fitted second hand narrowboat and need to know the approximate weight of it , it has a draft of 2 feet 10mm base plate and never been overplated. i wondered if anyone here may be able to give me an estimate weight, thank you all , happy cruising.
  16. thank you Rusty, can you tell me how much its costing you , thanks
  17. Thank you Rusty, can you tell me the approximate price, where it is done and if you had to have it out of water? Much appreciated
  18. Thank you mister brooks, it is a prior purchase survey , the insurance is apparently transferable the owner tells me and still has 8 months before re doing , i hope that will be ok when applying for the crt license, i will also have to have the boat taken out of water again soon anyway as i have to have it tranported from abc aldermaston to uxbridge, otherwise it needs to navigate the thames and i am not confident to do that , so could have the welding done then i suppose, this weed hatch business is important i realise but has left me perplexed as to how to go about it. thanks

  20. Yes, a typo it must be , it is a draft copy he asked me to read before he prints the hard copy, He also states that, " the weed hatch trunking is very low and needs to be higher but that otherwise that the splah plate, welds and water tight seal are in good condition with the quick locking mechanism free to turn and no sign of leakage". then later on in the report it has a number 1 recommendation , 1 meaning urgent, and a i quote, " 1. higher the weed hatch sides to increase the free board to ten inches " , it is about 7 inches at the moment. would that mean that the arm of the splash plate needs needs extending too and can it be done on the water or out ? any thoughts on that you fabulous people. THANK YOU all for all the replies so far
  21. hello all, i have just read a survey report for a 46 ft narrowboat, it says that the boat is mounted with a 31hp barrus shire 1200 engine and also says that it has 4 cylinders , shouldn't that read 3 and not four , iv'e checked the manual but does not mention cylinders, i have included a picture, it looks like 3 to me, any ideas out there , thank you all for your time
  22. Thank you all very much , a bit of history at last, you've all been brilliant and it will help a lot come the survey and iy will please the present owner (not for long i hope) he wants £24000 for it and if it is all good i'll make him a serious offer , the owner is an engineer and has kept the engine and bay in real good condition, i will let you all know what happens anyhow , happy cruising all !.
  23. Ah yes that all checks out as a friend told me that he seemed to remember them being based somewhere south of the river fee but in Wales , that's great thanks very much mate.
  24. Thank you Linnit, that's good news at least it may be a solid boat and of good steel one hopes, must admit the fit out was a little standard but it good shape, may I ask you where you got your info from. Thanks
