  1. It does look indeed like the diaphragm may need replacing! Just stripped the pump down and found this.... I have an old one in a box of bits that may do as a temporary repair, so I'm going to try that once I get home. Hi Tony, I will definitely be fitting a filter, I found some metal in with all the plastic so it looks like it ingested that. Thanks for the advice.
  2. I have had a look at the pump, however I cannot see a filter. Is the filter built-in to the pump? The supply from the water tank goes directly into the pump. I have attached a photo in case this helps.
  3. I think I may need to replace the water pump on our boat, as the water flow has dropped from its normal flow rate to barely a trickle. The pump is a Shurflo Aqua King. I have tested the pump using a direct 12v feed and the flow is no different, so it looks likely I need a new pump. However, before I shell out on a new pump I was wondering if there was anything I could check or if there was a common problem with these pumps.
  4. Thanks for the tips, I shall check the grate. I assume that by squirrel spinner you mean one of these, if so what benefit does this give? Does it help you to control heat more accurately? Thanks
  5. I have noticed that the glass does soot up very quickly, I've only cleaned it using damp newspaper so far.
  6. So far, I've only used ours a couple of times since we got the boat. I have noticed different coals vary in heat. So far its performing well. First night it went out early in the morning but thats because I didn't close the vent enough. It stayed in last night all night and just needed a fettle to get it going again this morning.
  7. Hi we have just purchased our boat and I am trying to identify the make of the stove, so that if I need spares I now what I am looking at. we may also add a backboiler at the future should we feel we need it. I think it may be a Villager Puffin. Does any have a clue? Thank you

  10. In light of recent posts of a similar nature, where various suggestions have been put forward, questions asked and people offering their services only for some of these to be deleted immediately without explanation or people being suspended I feel it is somewhat a waste of breath. However, given that caveat I personally wouldn't have an issue if a post of mine being edited provided the moderation is fair and that the goalposts don't get moved. For rules to work all sides need to abide by them.
  11. I can't quite see what has sunk there... Hang on, I'll have to take a closer look... Is it the Canal World Discussion Forum?

  16. Or, I could mount it on a gimbal so it self levels. Or am I just overthinking things ?
  17. Thanks for all the replies, looking at them makes me realise that I perhaps worded my initial question a little vaguely. One of my main concerns would be efficiency of any appliance we may have. I incorrectly assumed that 12v would be inherently more efficient that 240 volts. I also want to have the option to CC in the future without being reliant on a shore hook up I do like the idea of having a 12 volt system with a decent battery bank and inverter, and the suggestion in one of the posts to have a backup or alternatives. One thing we have decided on is to have a multifuel stove with a back boiler and a separate diesel heater like a webasto to provided heating and hot water. We would boil the kettle either on top of the multifuel stove or the hob, which would elimante one power hungry device. I think a twintub would probably suit our needs, we don't use a tumble drier anyway so I think we can rule that out. I can build a pc/desktop to run off 12volts or use a tablet for most things internet related so that shouldn't be an issue. One of my hobbies is PCs/Linux, so I may build a Raspberry Pi based system for the boat. When I said creature comforts I didn't really explain what I meant, and I suppose creature comforts can vary from one person to the next. Creature comforts for me often just includes a roaring fire, a good book or album and a decent single malt We're not too bothered about TV, we have more channels that we watch as it is and often find ourselves watching things using catchup so we would probably go down the netflix/youtube route. We're far more likely to listen to the radio than watch the telly. A definite creature comfort would be to have a decent turntable on board so I can keep my vinyl. So that leaves the fridge, I have seen another thread on fridges so I'm going to head over there to read it rather than go into it here. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. The discussion has been very informative, given me lots to ponder over.
  18. Hhm, sounds like a good idea. Thank you!
  19. Thanks, that's a really useful point, I hadn't realised that there was such a difference in price. Practicality makes a difference too. It looks like an inverter of some kind is going to be a sensible investment.
  20. Hi all, I have been looking into various options for living aboard for a while now, and ideally we would like to live with as little energy usage as possible, whilst still having most of the creature comforts we are used to. I guess this is a compromise that most people make. We don't watch a great deal of TV, internet is more our thing. I know I can set up a pc to run off 12 volts and that you can get washing machines and fridges that do the same, so I think most gadgets are covered. I was wondering how it is practical to use purely 12 volt appliances, compared with the convenience of a 240v set up. I would be installing some sort of solar array and charge controller, don't know quite what yet as I am just at the planning stage. Is using purely 12 volts a viable option? Has anyone got experience of living just using 12 volts? Many Thanks
  21. Yes, I found it, it definitely exists. I posted a new thread in that very section last night, curiously, it was deleted before anyone could respond. Nor did I receive any message saying why it was removed. I can only assume that I contravened some unwritten rule as I know I didn'the break any, not even the new ones.
  22. Hi All! I've been reading the forum for a couple of weeks now and thought I should introduce my self. I've hankered after a narrowboat for awhile, although as yet I've never set foot aboard one, so with that in mind we have a short holiday booked to dip in our toes in the water, so to speak. This is with a long term view of getting our own boat and eventually living aboard. Initially we would be either in a Marina or on a long term mooring due to work requirements. Hopefully, should boating life agree with us we would like to CC. I shall be trawling the forum for tips and will probably have a few questions along the way Thanks, Chas
  23. Hi Everyone, In a couple of weeks myself and the better half are having a short holiday on the L&L. We pick up the boat on Monday afternoon and will be returning it the next Friday morning We will be starting from Burnley and Heading towards Skipton, we would like if possible to visit Skipton but given the time of year and the number of locks as well as the fact that we are both novices makes me think that this may be a bit too ambitious. We will probably turn back once we reach Gargrave. Can anyone recommend some good watering holes along the way that do good food and real ale? Thanks
