  1. Hello Barney boaters, A practical question. In the ongoing work on Barney boat #26 I want/need to repaint the engine hole. I am quite small, but am struggling to reach bits of the floor that need scraping before de-greasing/ painting. I am not removing the engine, so any suggestions?! Also, pls humour me, a before and after pic of #26. Formerly Gwithian now Pea Green.
  2. Apologies for the lack of correct terminology. In answer to questions - no boatyard can't do it, and I have been advised to find someone else, after 4 months of them trying to secure a fitter. No the bss person doesn't know of anyone else other than the fitter used by the boatyard. As to the pathetic / superfluous / patronising /faintly mysoginist? response - how sad. It needs fitting, fast, by someone qualified to do it. i just needed suggestions of names/ places, (thank you for crick suggestion and list of gas safe ).
  3. Hello lovely people... So late last year many of you kindly offered advice on trying to get my old flavel stove up to scratch. I finally gave up on it in Nov and acquired a 2nd (BSS ok) replacement. My problem is that I have been waiting since Nov to get this fitted, the local person was away then too busy etc. I am fed up with tripping over the new cooker in the cabin, plus I need BSS is now due! Anyone know of a corgi fitter who could get this done ASAP? Moored at Welford. Huge thanks pls feel free to private message if you prefer. Kay
  4. All, as always grateful for your time and insight. I have tried to clean the jet, but am struggling to get at it and don't think I did a very good job. Will try again. The cooker is screwed to a wooden unit, and one of the screws has lost its head thread so can't manage to get the cooker off the base and then turn it upside down! The burner is a single piece of cast iron, no screws or ways to get inside except through the burner holes, and where the gas jet sits. There are about 20 burner holes max, and I did dig in with wire and a narrow scewer. Again I will have another go at it and follow suggestions re bicarb/washing powder/. Even the holes in the metal don't look the same size! Yes, the pics show the gas on max, after 10mins of running. Will update when I have more exciting pics to share :-) Thanks again K
  5. Hello Tony Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did remove the burner and have given it hell to try and remove rusty debris!(hammering/soaking/wire brush/compressor/ more soaking etc) It does seem to be more rust that burnt on foods. I am on the look out for a new (secondhand) cooker, but in the meantime would love it if my 'vintage' *hate that term* cooker would get through the bss in April. I may have another go at the burner, especially after your comments re it looking like burnt on junk. As always v grateful for the friendly advice and help. K
  6. Hello again. So I have now followed your advice and used a compressor on the oven gas bit, scrubbed it, dried it, compressed it again. Am attaching 2 photos - the tall flame pic is the before, soon after the gas man ce, the short flame pic was taken today. I know it is difficult from a pic, but any thoughts on whether this is still no good? Thanks as always. Kay
  7. Thank you all again - Mike will acquire compressed air and give it a try.
  8. Brilliant! Thank you. Re the pressure I am not sure, is that something for the gas fitter to check? I'll try cleaning the gas jet into the oven burner, it did look v clean, but know this may not be the case.
  9. It is a flavel courier, popular deluxe b600, circa 1973... I comically contacted flavel and they have no trace of such a product
  10. Thanks all - am with you on the Vanessa, not worth the risk of getting one without fss. Back to the old flavel courier on the boat - today I have had a go at the burners (hob and oven). Wire brushes, wire in holes, bashing them, pipe cleaners and screw drivers, not much grease, largely just rust fell out. Good news is the hob burners are now burning blue, I adjusted the air intake screw too. Bad news is that the oven burner is still orange, the flame is more even, but tips are still orange. I can't find (or perhaps it is access?) any screw to adjust air. Thoughts? Space is v limited - the cooker has to fit with its back to the hull. Does there have to be a measureable space behind /around a gas cooker?? If so then a 50cm square might not fit and it needs a battery ignition (or a box of matches) Grrrrr. This might be the best (that is cheapest) I have seen: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262626498736 Only issue i can see is the fold down lid, I measured height /hull and think it would be ok and reckon I can remove it if nec! Anyone else spot an issue? I feel like the cooker has taken over my life. Thanks all for the input K PS just seen your suggestion of caustic soda mross - thanks for that!
  11. Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282204391487 Morning all, my cooker obsession continues! Any thoughts on this (see link above). Would it fail bss as it may not have flame safety?! Words of wisdom appreciated (regarding ebay cooker K
  12. Not even my courier cooker is that old! Sounds gt though. I will start the clean tomorrow. Not quite sure how to extract the oven burner, top hob burners I have had out before, though. Might be seeking more advice on that one. Thank you to all, gt to know there are people out there to turn to and ask K PS yes you do have to hold the knob in to turn/light gas on hob, grill and oven, there are no pilot lights.
  13. Thank you all, as mentioned previously this is a flavel courier cooker, circa 1973, fitted when the boat was built circa 1973. It has passed bss 2012. As far as I am aware (and I am no expert) it has no cut outs, either on top burners, grill or oven. Ultimately would like to replace, but right now cash is short and if I can keep this going for another year (and bss) that would preferable.
