    Hi All

With Summer coming I'll be sorting out the outside of the boat and painting. There are a few spots where its rusty/been rusty when the surface is uneven and if i prep/paint over it, it will be very noticeable - no big holes, just rough!   I'm looking to find the best light/thin filler i can use to take a way the slight rough area.... I have P38 and P40 from ages ago and wondered if these would be ok to use or if the team would recommend something more suitable?  thanks as ever!!!!!

I like 'Big boy bodyfiller' from Toolstation. Goes on nice and is easy to sand. Get it in the 600ml tub and it's good value.

  2. 5 year rule

If a craft is entirely built (including the shell) by a DIY boatbuilder only for their personal use it is excluded from the RCR provided it is not placed on the market within 5 years of its first use as a boat. The boat does not have to be complete for the 5 year period to start, but does have to have been used as a boat (e.g. cruised on a waterway). The '5-year rule' does not apply to sailaway craft that have been completed by the first owner, as such craft have to be assessed under Post Construction Assessment by an Approved Body.

  3. Hi all,

I was hoping someone would be able to identify the wiring connection on the back of my alternator. It's been on my engine for a few years, but never had a belt or wiring, so I'm going to see if I can get it going.

There are no markings next to the 2 terminals with spade connectors on them. Would the blue arrow be the B+ , and the red arrow be the D+ ? There was a black wire connected to one of the mounting bolts that went back to battery negative.

I have wired an alternator before but the terminals were all marked up, Any advise appreciated thanks.

Will A Lister STW2 be powerful enough for a 50 ft narrowboat on the Severn or Trent.  Some have said 20 hp, some 28 hp ?.   Looking for a thumper but not much room on boat.  Any idea's please.

Have a look at Sabb or Bukh.

This is an outright informed guess so perhaps you should wait for  SirN or one of the Vintage engine chaps to come on.

large terminal on the end - battery negative

The other large terminal - battery positive

The two smaller terminals are for the "solenoid" coil so one negative and one positive from the ignition switch start position.

    Thanks Tony

Your wiring instructions were spot on. Got it going. Thanks again.

  6. Hi all,

I have an old starter motor and I'm struggling with the wiring. It's a cav CA45f12-35m , where do I connect wires to get it going ?. I have read some of sirnibbles previous posts but I can't find any wiring pics.

    Thanks

    I've circled the terminals.

Time to time i need the water pump diaphragm and now no spares are left. I only know Sleeman but they charge 40 pound for one 70mm rubber diaphragm !!! Are there any reasonible part supplier available ?

I bought a sabb 2j from Marine Enterprises, Dorset a couple of years ago. Sean there had 2 complete engines and 4 more stripped for parts. As part of the sale of the engine to me, he replaced the water pump diaphragm. So I think he would be worth a try. http://www.marineenterprisesltd.co.uk/

But (almost by definition) if it's stolen you didn't let it go, it was taken?

Not when you hand a stranger the keys and expect to be paid in instalments, over the next so many months.

(Not saying this has happened in this case)

As is always said on here, boat theft is never as simple as it first appears.
