  1. I can't find the link to read the comments that have been made. I suppose that I am having a senior moment but it seems to be a very long moment! Nick
  2. Quite close to the "limit of navigation" there are secure moorings. We hired from Alvechurch a coule of years ago and had no problems. The only bit of trouble that we had was at the Edinburgh end. Some chaps leaped aboard at ten in the evening singing "Rosie and Jim" and we amazed when I popped out and protested. The seemed more than a little non plussed to think that there was someone sleeping on the boat! Nick
  3. Considering the high cost of hiring these days I was wondering if it would be cheaper to crane out, transport up and crane in again rather than to hire. Anyone know off the top of his/her head how much that would cost? Nick
  4. As regards the fishes eye view. Total internal reflection means that the fish can see nothig above the surface which is more that about 43degrees from the vertical so the camouflage is largely redundant. Nick
  5. A subsidiary question. Can you install an inverter on its end. ie with its side up? Nick
  6. Perhaps we should email a link to this topic to AW! Nick

    winter hols

I can quite understand his motives. I really don't feel the cold on my legs and once yo have been out of longs for a day they seem very restricting. Nick
  8. I have neither at the moment but 230V fridges are cheap and I will need to get an inverter anyway so I thought that this would be the cheapest way. Nick

    Mud Weight

I do agree. A thoroughly nice place to be! N
  10. Just a thought, since noone has mentioned it. Any given weight will have the maximum effect if it is placed as far from the centre line as possible. No a diversion to consider the list corrector for the narrowboater who has everything. the device is a wheeled weight on a track which runs across the boat. It has an electric motor driven screw which can move it across the boat at the flick of a switch. Better than that, the motor circuitry is connected to a clinometer arrangement which detects any list and moves the weight across automatically to correct it. Don't forget that I suggested it first and want a cut of any profits! Nick

    Mud Weight

This discussion leaves me thinking. I have a substantial Danforth anchor which I will always have handy on rivers in case of emergency but it seems to me that a mud weight would be a useful thing to have as well. Do you use them with just rope or is a chain advisable? Nick
  12. Since it looks as if I am going to buy a new inverter I have been studying the data on the internet. Just one of the modified sine wave inverters that I looked at said that it would not run a fridge because of the problems with an inductive load. The other MSW units that I looked at did not mention any problems in that way. I wonder if it is a problem of damage to the fridge motor or damage to the inverter. Can I overcome the problem, if it exists, by derating? I would be interested to hear your views. Nick.
  13. I'm not at all convinced that you can use a diesel engine with gas. No carburettor and how do you inject gas? I would think that a gas engine would have to bee on a spark ignition cycle. Nick

    Mud Weight

Just to show my ignorance. Is a mud weight a sort of anchor? Nick
  15. Early on we decided that Theodora's lavatorial arrangements are not as we would like! We have decided to take the portapotti route (Now that statement can lead to some entertaining exchanges, I am sure!) I am sure that the obviously sensible thing to do first is to have it pumped out and thoroughly rinsed out. What then? How is the tank fastened down? how heavy is the empty tank likely to be? BTW is there a send hand market in pump out loos? It is really in very good condition and could be fitted in a more convenient way, I am sure. Nick.
  16. I am sure that your gut feeling is correct. I bet your pump could not push water to the top of School Hill! Nick
  17. Never, in al the thirty three years of canalling (32y 10m of hiring and 2months of owning :-) ) have I had any bother with fishermen. Ihave had cheery "good mornings" and dour looks but never an insult or injury. Nick
  18. I was most impressed by the welcome that Dave gave us. A tour around and the proise to adjust mooring lines ans the river levels change. cheaper than most too. Nick
  19. Before we bought Theodora my sister and brother in law generously lent us Blake for fairly extended holidays. The JD3 sounds lovely and the brass trimmings attract much comment from the gongoozlers. Most people believe that the sound is from a vintage engine. The engine itself performs beautifully: lots of bottom end torque, which, coupled with a fairly coarse pitch screw, gives really good stopping power. This is unlike Theodora, whose stopping power leaves much to be desired! Nick
  20. Using heat shrink sleeving looks like a really good idea and makes a neat job. How do you apply the heat? Match? Blow torch !? Nick Edit: Oops! You can't edit the title. I mean, of course, "Shrinking" Thread title modified - Dhutch
  21. One of the improvements that I have lined up for Theodora is a bit of sound proofing. The (rather long, nearly cruiser) traditional stern has the engine underneath it (back to front, with a belt drive down to the propshaft which then runs under the engine. Do I line just the lift up plywood boards or do I line the sides of the engine space as well, ie the boat's skin? Nick
  22. It sounds delightful. the builder made it sound even better by fitting what looks like a silence but is, in fact a resonator. It makes it go "thunk" instead of "thuck". Nick
  23. Could you tell us a little about the Peukert factor? Nick
  24. I would suggest that there can be a number of reasons why you would want a separate generator. 1. The size of the generator's engine can be matched to the electrical power output. This means that you don't get the problems associated with running a diesel on very low load. 2. The diesel generator can be very thoroughly sound insulated so running the washing machine is not accompanied by the racket of a JD3. 3. I suspect that the fule efficiency of running a propulsion engine just to generate electrical power is rather low so by having a dedicated machine you will do less environmental harm. Nick
