  1. Never heard of them, and I've no inkling to change that. Seen this so many times, and not just on the canals, people change their circumstances to make what they think is a better life, except they make the mistake of bringing their 'baggage' with them. Their lives end up exactly like the ones they'd escaped.
  2. Just wondering if anyone has had experience of using this website to find parking spaces? Trustpilot has awarded them '85% Excellent' after 37+k reviews. I guess you could soon build a 'relationship' with someone with a space for regular parking as you cruise about. Not sure what car insurance firms make of it. https://www.justpark.com/

  5. You can send an email to the same email address... have a go....
  6. To upload a photo to the forum, open the photo on your camera app, then press the share button (the icon for sharing looks like 3 connected dots) Choose your method of sharing - choose email, then send the pic to your email Open your email from your laptop, then either copy the image onto a forum post, or save the pic to your laptop, and upload from there. Think a variety of pics will help enormously. Sorry I can't help with electrics, think you've got better knowledge than me there ?
  7. When you're moored at the end of a 3 berth pontoon, and there're spaces along the pontoon where there are no boats moored, it's a freezing windy night with ice on top of the water; it's 2 in the morning and you're tottering along the pontoon towards the bank, in one hand you've got a torch, and in the other hand there's a lead with a dog on the end that's eaten something it shouldn't and now it's got a gippy tummy........ got THAT t-shirt! ?
  8. Can't you take a few pictures of the setup LadyG? More the merrier I think.
  9. In new Mancetter Marina on the Coventry, on one side of the marina the pontoons are just one boat deep, and spacing between boats on the single berths are about 12 inches or so apart. On the other side of the marina there are finger berths, with 2 or 3 boats berthed along one side of the pontoon. There appears to be plenty of space for a boat to pass in the middle. Seeing that Rothern own and built the marina, no doubt Mancetter Marina is their flagship, their shop window for marina construction. TBH we're really impressed at the detail. https://www.therothengroup.co.uk/
  10. Follow the link for the recording...? http://www.waterwaysongs.info/Songs/G/grumpy_old_boater.htm Grumpy Old Boater by Ian H Bruce (2016) Water temperature's rising, the oil pressure's low He's coughing out black smoke wherever he goes He should service the engine but we daren’t tell him so For he is a grumpy old boater Baggy jeans, oily tee-shirt, and scuffed leather boots An abrasive old misfit, too fond of disputes For politeness and manners he don’t give two hoots For he is a grumpy old boater Irksome and set in misogynous ways He lives in the past, dreams of long bygone days An outspoken critic of all he surveys For he is a grumpy old boater When boaters greet him he just cuts them dead Averting his eyes he stares straight ahead "How do?" and "Good Morning" and are words left unsaid For he is a grumpy old boater He'll shout and he'll swear at boats passing by 'Cos he thinks they're too fast and he’ll never see why He can’t be a candidate for ‘Mr Nice Guy’ For he is a grumpy old boater Alone on his boat through the long winter storms He's a churlish hothead when the temperature warms It's 'Bah Humbug' to summer and those leisure boat swarms For he is a grumpy old boater That queue at the locks just couldn't be worse While stopped does he chat? No, quite the reverse He'll gripe and he'll groan, he’ll chunter and curse For he is a grumpy old boater So take note grumpy boater, you know who you are On tow-path, afloat, or propping up bar A cantankerous dipstick who just goes too far So push off you grumpy old boater

  18. We did the Huddersfield Broad and Narrow, it was obviously tight for our 58ft plus buttons. We used the pole to push the boat's bow into the corners, in a sort of diagonal manoeuvre. It helped having a round stern. It was a memorable journey, for all good reasons.
  19. Just throwing this in..... Car insurance is the cheapest since 2014 due to lockdown - just saying that boats were in lockdown too? https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance/
  20. Believe VAT can be reclaimed at a UK airport for US citizens. Keep your 'appropriate' receipts, you might be entitled to a rebate, about 20%. https://www.birminghamairport.co.uk/at-the-airport/security-customs/vat-refunds/
  21. My husband's got 'The Celtic Curse', to help relieve it he needs regularly blood letting (no medication necessary)...... think I'm joking? Anyone with Irish blood in them should look it up, it can save a lot of discomfort, and even prolong your life! Sorry for being 'off topic' but I never let a 'Haemochromatosis' awareness opportunity pass ?
  22. Have a play on https://canalplan.org.uk/ all you need to know, including watering points, sanny services, overnight mooring, is on the website. You can add how many hours cruising you're planning in a day - set your criteria.
