  1. Except there aren't the same amount of job opportunities elsewhere
  2. Feel like I should say something here to stick up for the 'new London boaters' group! In my opinion it is actually one of the better, more balanced and sensible boating facebook groups. Mostly for new boaters to ask questions in an attempt to learn about boating without the risk of a tirade of sarcasm and patronising comments that one can get in many of the other groups! Not sure where the OP gets the idea no one in it is interested in history? Or why that would matter anyway? Although i must say the statement about no CRT employees is odd as there are plenty of questions about CRT guidelines for cc'ing with mostly sensible answers from people who do know what they are talking about...
  3. But I'm sure there is a pound in the Tyrley locks with no landings as there is an underwater rock shelf?
  4. Hi We had to leave the boat unattended at Dukinfield junction on the towpath for quite a few days (due to loosing the propeller in a nearby mattress) and it was fine. If you are staying on the boat it will certainly be fine. There are rings hidden in the grass between the lift bridge and the junction. Or you could ask Portland basin (they also run the small marina at the top of the Ashton locks which may have space). I think marple may have closed again though....
  5. Yes it seems the annual summer beating the K&A takes has begun!
  6. Yes Kennet and Avon canal boaters society (or something like that)
  7. According to Facebook it has now been refloated so lock should open soon
  8. We turned a 57ft narrowboat where the River Coln flows in back in 2011 with no problems, but had a walk past it last week and the trees look much more overgrown now. I think it might actually be easier to turn in the beginning of the canal?
  9. Thanks for posting this. The Paddington arm looks to be shut at Perivale for 3 months! That will be a headache for many depending on what the windows for navigation are like. But glad to see the Lee and Stort where im going for winter are relatively open
  10. Thanks!!...actually looks like tightening the water drain bolt at the base of it has stopped the leak. Done several hours at high revs on the Thames this morning and no leak so far. ?
  11. Will it be ok cruising with it leaking for long enough to get to a boat yard and put on a new filter? I didn't look like any water came out, just diesel.
  12. Thanks, will try tightening everything and seeing if that stops it otherwise will get a new one. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything stupid!
  13. Hello forum! Apologies if this has been answered...I tried searching for it. I noticed a slow leak from the primary fuel filter. Am attempting to drain the water but not having done this before have a few questions. Its an Alco sp967 on an isuzu35/Liverpool hull. It seems to be dripping very slowly from the base of the filter. I have removed the bolt at bottom to let water drain but should the fuel line be open? I shut it off. Or should the other bolt at the top of the filter be lessened too? How do you tell when it is diesel not water coming through or will it stop coming through? TIA Dave
  14. Heading up to Lechlade this weekend. The South Oxford has been very quiet all week, only 8 boats passed all day on Tuesday when it was sunny. Expect the upper Thames will be even quieter
  15. Very interesting! But Peel holdings still own the canal even though this trust run it?
  16. The Basingstoke is well worth it! I went to Odiham and back october last year, it was all in a perfectly ok condition and the locks are better than many CRT ones, plus you have the rangers on hand if there are any problems while you do the locks. I've never been on a canal where the people walking the towpath etc were so friendly and glad to see boats! That novelty make it worth it in itself I think...But the scenery is also fantastic
  17. But the idea nurses are not taught to wash hands is not true! Back on thread (slightly) can confirm Napton elsan is working again despite crt stoppage notice to the contrary (no signs here)
  18. Not true...its because of overuse of antibiotics
  19. Thanks all! Will give it ago with chimney and see. And certainly won't be trying Nells bridge any time soon. Came through the river Tove below Stoke Brueurne today and it was pretty hairy!
  20. Went over the Great Ouse at Cosgrove yesterday and it was over the banks!
  21. Morning all, As per title really. Heading towards the south Oxford at Napton junction and given the current spring-like weather thought it would be nice to keep the stove on. It has been ages since I went this way. Having spent too long on wide canals, I have forgotten whether it is a bad idea to keep the chimney on (for at least as far as Banbury)? Are there any very low bridges?
  22. Maybe they reversed back out afterwards? And guiltily sped off...?
  23. They do still have lengthsmen in some form, I recently met one, but this chap covers some 20 miles of the lower G.U.
  24. I know...and it makes it easier to get out the begging bowl if it wasn't CRT's fault
  25. It says now on the CRT website that the suspected cause of the breach was both sets of paddles on Stanthorne lock being left open, and the increased flow overtopping the canal - as opposed to poor maintenance or inadequate inspections. But could the lock really let water down fast enough to overcome the by wash at Wardle lock and the overflow on the embankment? I would have thought wash from speeding boats would cause more damage? Just seems a bit convenient for CRT to be able to blame 'vandalism'.
