  1. Another vote for Narrowboatwill. Appreciates the good but also shows the trails and tribulations.
  2. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  3. Not sure how practicable it would be but something like a weak mechanical link possibly?
  4. But what about single handling?
  5. Oh yes that is lovely. Would be a pleasure to cruise to that all day.
  6. Cheers @Mike Hurley I dont think i could live with that day to day.
  7. Thanks, I just have memories of a lazier, deeper, chugging along type of sound.
  8. Currently watching and enjoying Canal Boat Diaries on Yesterday channel. Been a while since my last hire so not sure if it's just me but the presenters engine seems to need high revs and be noisy compared to my (rose tinted 20:20) recollections of my last time on the canals.
  9. Seemed to have spent a lot of money making it worse except for cyclists.
  10. I am the OP and was impressed the way my first post was going!
  11. How dare you bring this back on topic 😆
  12. It is the age of entitlement and if you dare speak out you are damned. Manners and consideration for others seem to be gone.
  13. Thanks for a very comprehensive reply Tony. As you say most of the time I would be able to choose which days I was out cruising so that aspect is maybe not so important. I'll try hiring a semi-trad and trad to see what I make of them. Maybe that'll help refine my search or maybe I'll just realise that I could get by with any type of stern.
  14. Named after a racehorse that my friends and I would put a few shillings on a while ago when i registered with the site, unfortunately can't seem to change user name now. My mid-late life crisis has me getting the urge to go slower rathrr than faster.
  15. I think so. You pay your money and you take your choice. In terms of safety, discipline and being aware of the risks are maybe more important factors.
  16. Marina purely as a base when not using the boat, otherwise out on the cut for extended periods.
  17. Good point, should have elaborated a bit more in the original post. It would be used for continuous use over a matter of weeks or months. My primary concern in asking the question was in getting on and off safely especially at locks.
  18. Thank you both. It's been interesting to have a bit of a poll of members opinions. First boat could just be a learning experience and if I find it unsuitable for one reason or another I'll know better what to look for in another one.
  19. Thanks, I've only had experience with cruiser stern to date. The overwhelming opinion appears to favour traditional stern and have been given a link to a company that hires them and accepts dogs so will try and see how I feel it would work.
  20. Yes, this is the creature in question - on a Kates narrowboat
  21. Sounds like it's a trad for me then!
  22. Trad's outright leaders Many thanks to @Loddon for the link, I've ordered a copy in anticipation of being afloat
  23. Thanks, trads certainly coming out top, will hire the boat from M_JG's post and take it from there.
  24. Thanks. Seems all types have their pro's and con's and are a compromise in one way or another. Have experience of cruiser stern but think need to hire semi-trad and trad before getting the cheque book out and see what I feel most comfortable with.
  25. Thank you. Seems all types of stern are 'do-able' as a single handling but other considerations need to be prioritised so has been a very worthwhile post for me.
