We hired a large 6 berth cruiser last June from Laggan. We were at Drumnadrochit when the wind began to blow with a reasonably large swell in the water and some white tops to the waves. Our boat was taking quite a beating as it slapped onto the waves rather than cut through them making it very uncomfortable with items falling to the floor in the galley. We turned back, going with the wind this time and returned to Drumnadrochit for another night. Just an example of how the weather can quickly change. I imagine it will be difficult to find a type of craft that will meet all your wishes in one.

Both Wroxham and Potter Heigham bridges are too low for most Broads cruisers. If you can clear Ludam Bridge the river Ant leads up to Barton Broad and beyond that to Stalham and Neatishead. The Ant is a beautiful river to explore.

If you go The Norfolk Broads Forum you can find a host of info regarding bridge clearance, rise and fall (for both Spring and Neap tides). If you can clear Great Yarmouth and Acle bridges you can cover most of the Broads. Been there lots of times in the past, hope you too have a great time there

Midges promote the principal of survival of the fittest and this means that Scotland does not become too crowded.

So many questions with so many answers. Regarding cranage, it depends on the size/weight of the boat, one option is to be craned to the River Carron at Grangemouth and enter the canal at the Kelpies. Why don't you walk along the canal and talk with existing boat owners. There may some disillusioned owners who are interested in selling their boat which already on the canal thereby saving a lot of money in transportation. Maintenance facilities on the canal are very limited. Hope things work out for you.

I am sorry that my reference to Marston's Pedigree has taken the topic off the original post.

Along with some friends, we hired from English County Cruisers at Wrenbury in the late 70's. It was provided with an anchor on the foredeck as cruising the River Weaver was an option. I recall my first taste of Marston's Pedigree in the pub across the canal at the bridge. I can still conjure up the flavour in my mind.

From the plan, the marina is on the offside of the canal. At Ratho, Cala has a major influence on the marina.

We had to bring our boat through ice when we had it delivered to Grangemouth. From the Kelpies to the Falkirk Wheel wasn't too bad, but up on the Union Canal we came across a variety of ice thickness. Taking slowly and allowing for the fact that the bow does not swing round as it usually does is what we found. Checking the water line much later on showed minimal loss of blacking. Perhaps we were lucky.

At Gairlochy Locks, the lock keepers lower a rope down which is secured at the lockside to you as the lock is too deep to throw one up. Never came across this before.

Can also recommend Tuckeys. Everything went to plan and got regular updates including from the driver.

We got our gold stars. Even though I am retired I got a bit envious of the kind lady working somewhere as beautiful as Kytra Lock.

Second the vote for the Caledonian Canal, did it in June this year. Beyond my expectations.

Sitting having lunch earlier today in The Boathouse, Auchinstarry and had the delight of seeing one of the local boats out for a short cruise. Thank you.

It has been a while since this was done but I do remember that the mechanic had quite a bit of trouble getting to the switch and getting a spanner onto it. I am sorry but I cannot remember exactly where the switch was located and I no longer own the boat.

Sorry, that I didn't follow up with an outcome. The locally recommended engineer suggested that a replacement pressure switch was the best starting point rather than having to lift the engine out to check the pump. The switch was replaced, with no other issues and the need for a replacement engine was avoided.

Over the last few months we had been preparing for a sponsored walk along the full length of the Forth and Clyde Canal. During that time and also the walk itself we witnessed no boat movements at all. We did see a weed cutter along near Old Kilpatrick. On the morning of the walk, Friday 3rd August we did see some efforts to skim the weed from the surface at Bowling Basin. Last Thursday we walked from Maryhill to Speirs Wharf and again the weed growth was evident except for the area immediately in front of the residential moorings.
