  1. Interesting about the Canal Shop. When we went down the 9 in 1980 we had great trouble finding someone to take our money and unlock the top gates, let alone a shop.
  2. This is what we did. Works perfectly and can be left in place permanently until such time you want ventilation.

  5. I have a number under the engine but it's not the HIN. I have the HIN on a plate screwed to the wall inside the engine room.
  6. Mine has a HIN, it just doesn't appear on the outside of the hull.
  7. You've never taken the heater out if a 7 series BMW.
  8. I wear mine whenever moving the boat, out on the River or just across to the services. Doesn't stop drunks from throwing themselves into the water. I seem to recall some years ago there were a spate of deaths in the River Aire through Leeds with calls for it to be fenced. Except it already was.
  9. First thing Jeannette said when looking at the picture.
  10. You don't have to have a screed although it's recommended but a screed finds its own level and a boat tends to sit nose high. Ours was laid on LVT underlay which is about 5mm thick to cope with irregularities. We bought a Hug carpet but despite several washings I found that bits kept coming off and sticking to my feet unless I wore slippers. It was replaced by the suppliers but replacement was the same so got a refund.
  11. On the old maps Wharf Street ran from Leek Road to Church Street just to the South of Stoke Station on the towpath side of the canal. Obliterated now by the A500 but Wharf Place exists at the station end.
  12. Surprised at the 10% increase in Gold Licence as the increase the EA have confirmed for 2024 is 2%.
  13. Can recall what time limits and pretty sure we stayed longer than 48 hours last time we were there. They are gated, floating pontoons shared with long term moorers. The only water tap is near the gate so you may need a long hose or share your neighbours. There are more electricity outlets than long term moorers but you will need a MeterMacs account to use them. There can be quite a flow across the ends if the pontoons which can make reversing in interesting. If you look at the tide tables you may be able to pick a time when the tide is at highest when the river discharge is minimal.
  14. Another good picture. I had assumed that all the buildings were demolished at the same time as A38 built.
  15. Certainly the bottom rail of our enclosure is sealed to the top of the tray so gives an extra 45mm of depth.
  16. Ours is pretty low. Tapers from about 15mm depth at the high end to about 25mm at the drain hole in the opposite corner. The overall height of the tray is about 50mm. Once or twice I've forgotten to switch the pump on but soon realise when my toes get covered. We too have a Whale Gulper
  17. We have a Hamlet Solution 5 on our 60 x 10 fitted between the kitchen and lounge (reverse layout) With a fan it keeps the bedroom at the far end at a nicely comfortable temperature.
  18. The 2nd photo is at the bottom of the Glasson Arm rather than L & L. Blackburn Locks used to have paddles with fixed windlass' similar to the first picture. Got a photo somewhere that I'll try and find. And one at least of the staircase locks dropping down to Leeds still has it but pinned to the balance beam so cannot be used. Not sure it had a fixed windlass when it was usable but probably.
  19. And generally pretty useless. Our previous boat had a flat section projecting out below the stern fender. Our current boat has an 'ear' stuck out either side at the stern. Our neighbours boat has two large steps let in either side. But, the problem is getting your foot in or onto them, which are bound to be slippery, at the same time trying to get you hand into something to pull yourself up. Our other neighbour, considerably younger than me, decided to have a swim in the river last summer. He found it impossible to pull hi self out. He now has a folded emergency ladder tied to his stern rail that he can reach easily.
  20. Elite Furnishing at Tamworth make furniture for boats.
  21. The remains of this one are also visible
  22. Think there's been several proposals.

  24. Many wide locks in the North have cast iron or stone what look like handholds which I've read were for pulling boats into locks with a hitcher. Searching hitcher on Google shows this.
