  1. Great news, nothing like a simple free fix to brighten up a day :-)
  2. Ok, good luck with the oil can.
  3. Dean, As far as I recall, the first thing going 'into' the gearbox behind the selector lever is a small o ring seal on the selector shaft, so that keeps muck out of gearbox. It is separate from the problem area around the detente ball. If you have the PRM manual with the drawings in it, the bits we are talking about are- C4 operating lever C5 steel ball 6mm C1 spacer C12 'o' ring Etc. The grating sound when operating the lever in my case was from the area around the spring actuated detente steel ball. Whilst we are talking about that particular seal, C12. On another occasion after we had put a "few" hours on the gearbox some years later we started to get a small but persistent oil leak out of there. Didn't understand the arrangement at that time so just kept cleaning it up. Then, one day the oil ring failed (split) and it leaked profusely. Expecting a big bill, I called in at the boatyard at the top of Stockton locks to get it sorted. Twenty minutes later and just £10 lighter it was fixed with a new seal and was leak free once again. Great service. Good luck, Bob.
  4. Same as Waggers just said. I had exactly same symptom and it was very simply a tiny build up of debris/corrosion between the gear selector lever on the gearbox and the gearbox casting in way of the detent ball. A liberal squirt of oil between the two and worked backwards and forwards several times. Quick fix and just like new. Problem was inherited from the previous owner who had not used the boat much at all. Good luck.
  5. Very recently had same with my Eberspacher DW4SC. The heat exchanger had failed and allowed coolant into the furnace chamber and thence out through the exhaust. Clouds of white smoke obliterated the marina. Check your coolant header tank, you may notice a lowered level. Mine failed fairly quickly and ended up flooding the Eberspacher and exhaust line with diesel and coolant.
  6. Nope, Pheonix V and Tugby are different (my boat is now Andromeda though, no longer Tugby). I have looked at the stat and cut out settings on my immersion heater today. The stat is set to 60C and the cut out was set to 85c which may be too close to the Eberspacher output temperature causing the immersion safety cut out to operate regularly. This means I have to take all the bed stuff off to get to the tank to press the little reset button on the cut out, and like the poster above, one day I will forget to turn the power off first as it becomes a routine and boring activity. I see that a link above shows heater elements that have a the cut out set at 98C and coincidentally I have wound mine up to 95C today so will see what happens when the Eber runs for a couple of hours first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks for all the input. More people must experience this unless they have immersion elements without the safety cut out as they are still widely available and permitted in certain arrangements. Bob.
  7. I have a twin coil calorifier. Coil 1 on engine coolant circuit, Coil 2 on Eberspacher heating circuit. Horizontal calorifier under double bed in aft cabin. Additionally, there is a 2kw electric immersion heater. This heater has a controlling thermostat set about 60C and a safety thermal cut out to prevent tank boiling in the event of the controlling thermostat failing on. I understand this is now a legal requirement in domestic/housing situation. I think the cutouts were brought in when a tank boiled, went up into the plastic loft tank which then burst, with the result of scalding water pouring through the ceiling below into a bedroom and onto a sleeping person. Anyhow, the thermal cut out on here has popped out a couple of times recently needing the little black button pressing back in to reset it in order to get the immersion to go on. We have only just started using the immersion seriously now the eberspacher is back on part time duties. I THINK, the cut out is tripping because the calorifier tank gets above the immersion safety trip temperature when the engine or the eberspacher has been running and presumably taking the tank temperature up to 85C or so? Does this sound plausible? If so, can I safely link out / bypass the safety thermal cut out on the immersion heater given that its purpose is not relevant in the location the calorifier is fitted? What do you think? Many thanks.
  8. PFU - header tank does not have a ball cock valve, it is a closed circuit system not unlike the engine cooling system. Investigation Update - having thought about it overnight ... If the antifreeze/water mix missing out of the header tank is not in the cabin bilge or engine bilge, then it must have left the boat! A few years ago on an earlier boat with a Webasto heater I had a similar experience when the heater exchanger unit in the boiler became perforated and the heating circuit liquid crossed over into the exhaust and left the boat via the exhaust system. So ... Decided to drop the exhaust hose off the bottom of the Eberspacher as the first action and low and behold, dirty water and unburnt diesel dropped out into the bilge. Eberspacher unit removed and now with Halls Auto Electrics in Yate just north of Bristol. I am hoping it is nothing more than a broken gasket, but they will investigate and advise. Will update with the results. Bob.
  9. Came back to boat after a few days away. Eberspacher dead, was set to run 3 x 3 hour burns a day just as it has done for the last 4 months with no problem (going off at 8pm each evening). Symptoms: 1) All coolant gone from header tank, vanished! Was ok just before I went away - no obvious water accumulation in either cabin bilge or engine room bilge, no evidence of damp or damage anywhere. 2) Faults codes read from 7 day timer - Seems to have had three failed starts, code 052, then locked out on code 050. 050 Too many no start attempts Safety time counter reading exceeded. Reset control unit using 7 day timer or fault code retrieval device to unlock control unit. 052 No start safety time exceeded No flame detected on start attempt. Check fuel delivery and fuel supply, Check exhaust gas and combustion air ducts. Where has the coolant gone??? Bob.
  10. Moored about 1 mile south of Sellars Bridge overnight Friday 1st March. Gent with the German Shepherd called Roger (if you know them you will know which one is Roger). I owe the gent an apology and would like to make it or have it relayed. Thank you.
  11. This morning, at the Etruria Museum moorings, we rescued a young black Alsatian cross type bitch from the canal in a distressed condition - the sides are high hard concrete and she couldnt get out on her own. A walk around all the nearby boats didnt turn up an owner. The dog is now with some big soft hearted guys at the BW maintenance base at Etruria as they know the local contacts / procedures for lost dogs. Posted here as the dog wanted to get on any boat she could as we walked around so maybe a lost boaters dog. Bob & Nicky Fleming nb Andromeda
