  1. Hello all, anyone used a vitreous flue pipe? Seems to be a commonly used material in houses and is half the price (and weight) of a steel flue. I can't think of any reason it would be unsafe ~ can anyone else? Suggestions and advice please. Thanks
  2. Thank you all for your replies. I'm learning a lot. I have also just spoken on the phone to Graham Cutmore (recommended by Alde) and yes, it would seem I need to switch the room thermostat on, and turn it up to it's maximum (this recent hot spell didn't work in my favour) to kick start the pump on the header tank. I will give that a try this evening when I get to the boat. Fingers crossed.
  3. Can anyone help? I have an old Alde comfort gas boiler which heats the water in my calorifier & 4 radiators onboard. I have recently removed 2 of the radiators & capped them off. There don't seem to be any leaks in the system and I have re-filled the header tank with 50/50 anti-freeze/de-ionised water. But when I have switched the boiler back on there is no hot water! I've opened the valves on the radiators to bleed them with the Alde off and on several times and water comes out but it's not heating up!?! I have tried isolating the radiators and firing up the boiler - the water in the header tank gets hot and the pipe leading to the calorifier gets warm but not hot (I've tried leaving it on for several hours but it still doesn't heat the water in the calorifier) What am I missing here?
  4. I possibly have a leaky water tank. Will investigate fully when I have time this weekend but just wanted to know if anyone has replaced an integral water tank under the well deck with a moulded plastic or bladder type one and if so, how difficult and expensive was it?
  5. There's a 'shredder' down there and you want me to put my arm into it?
  6. Thanks, I could see an opaque tank at the top of the unit, didn't have a torch to hand and there's a bulkhead in front which doesn't allow alot of access or visibility but I will take a torch back and have a look at the level. What if the liquid in the system has been there a long time, does it not require draining? Not sure of the model number. It says Alde Comfort on the unit but nothing else. Do you know where I might find the model number? All it says is Alde Comfort.
  7. Hi, so I've had solid fuel stoves on my previous boats but have just bought a new 2nd hand boat that only has radiators attached to an Alde comfort gas boiler. I've never used one before. Alde have all the instruction manuals available on their website but I'm not sure if I can safely just fire her up or if I need to check the water levels in the system before I do that. Will it all explode if there's not enough water? Should I drain all the water from the radiators and refill them (on the radiators themselves or through the Alde boiler) before starting? I don't want to damage anything. Help! Thank you
  8. Hi. So I've lived on boats for 15 years but have always had port potti's (easy & simple!) But I've just bought a new 2nd hand boat that has a fancy flushing toilet and I have no idea how it works or where to start? Do I start by trying to use it ~ or should I attempt to flush it out (from the outside inlet on the gunnel) and pump it out before attempting to use it? I have no idea when last the boat was used or what state of fullness or empty-ness the tank was left in or for how long. (I bought from a broker who knows nothing about the boat and doesn't want to give me contact details of previous owner - I guess they don't want me finding out how much they bought her for???? - who knows the reason). There is a large integral steel tank under the double bed which is next to the bathroom which contains the toilet which is quite posh looking, it sits on a little raised area with a electric press button switch on the wall) It's a Vetus toilet with 3 buttons, eco-flush, normal flush & then a press and hold button. Vetus' website isn't very clear on how to use it but I really don't want to press any buttons and have waste start bubbling up at me through the pan......... am I being paranoid?
