  1. Thanks for all the responses - very helpful. The answer seems to be likely to more picky than less, which is probably what I guessed / expected. Many thanks.
  2. Sorry, should have thought to include an example! https://www.zanussi.co.uk/laundry/laundry/washing-machines/front-loader-washing-machine/zwf824b3pw/
  3. So far as I understand it, inverter motor washing machines use the inverter function to control the speed at which the drum rotates and helps iron out voltage spikes. Does this imply that an inverter motor machine will be more tolerant of a ‘dirty’ input current, and therefore less picky about what DC to AC inverter in supplying the AC current??
  4. We have just had the ‘alternator on the way out’ experience. Symptoms were the buzzer not going totally silent on engine start and, when I looked closely enough, the domestic alternator warning light was glowing faintly. I took the old alternator to Electrostart in Daventry, who ran it up on their test rig and confirmed that it wasn’t working properly. They gave me the option of them rebuilding it, fixing the failed diode pack and whatever other problems they found, or just buy a replacement, which would be quicker and cheaper. They transferred the pulley from old to new, checked I had the right electrical connections, and altered a fixing point on the alternator to suit the bolts I had. Friendly people, excellent service, and the only retail place I have ever seen left hand twist drills on sale! Recommended. https://electrostart.co.uk/
  5. Northampton gets more weedy and shallow the closer you get to Northampton. The section through the Washlands is brilliant; mooring is a little sparse on the river generally but much better if you join the Friends of the Nene - I see you have already had the link. You might want to check if the river is still on reds but the river itself is a nice place to be. Oh yes - Oundle has a Waitrose within easy walk of the stone bridge after Aston Lock, which is probably the easiest shopping spot after Northampton and Peterborough; Elton has a good little village store.

    Licences

Computers systems are not cheap to have in operation; staff are not cheap to have just “sitting there”. If these things are not actually doing stuff, they wouldn’t be there e.g. smaller servers would be running at higher capacity, fewer staff sitting there doing nothing.
  7. This stoppage is due to be completed on March 1st. Does anyone have a view on how realistic that is?? Thanks in advance. Forget that - I’ve just received the mail saying it’s been finished early!
  8. Any chance of a link???
  9. Genuine question - how would one do that test?? The only way I can think of is to run down the LA bank to 20-30% of capacity and then start recharging at tick over. Any better ideas?
  10. I have used bio-ethanol as the fuel for Gauge 1 locos - it works ok but, used indoors, smells just as bad a meths!
  11. A litre of boiling water will convert to 1600 litres of steam, though you would probably notice that much condensation in an exhaust pipe or that much loss of coolant.
  12. That machine looks perfect for long-arm quilting. Better hadn’t show my good lady!
  13. Fair comments. The full story is that we went down the Arm, through the Middle Levels, nosed around the Great Ouse, Cam, Lark, Little Ouse and Wissey before retracing our steps back to the GU. That little lot took best part of a month. Perhaps it was the time of year, but that section of the Arm, together with very shallow sections on the Levels, around Whittlesey and March, meant that that section of the trip was, quite literally, a drag. The rivers were great! So, perhaps I should rephrase - we don’t plan to do the Northampton Arm again in our current boat, but then we don’t plan to change boat!
  14. Seventeen of the blighters, to be exact! There’s enough space to wind immediately before the last lock as you go down the flight, but the section leading down to that was very shallow mid-September last year, with plenty of weed to enhance the fun! We don’t plan to do the Northampton Arm ever again.
  15. Which is fine, right up to the point that National Parks find their funding reducing - as has already happened.

  17. We have about 350W of Solar to keep the batteries topped up over winter. When we go boating, we move every day, for a minimum of 2 hours, to ensure the batteries have regained all / most of their charge and to get hot water. If the weather is bad enough that we stay put, we run the engine for a minimum of an hour to get hot water. I’m not totally sure that the panels were the best thing I ever did for the boat, to be honest.
  18. Genuine question: What is the relevance of the boat being “basically stationary” in all this? If it acts as a ‘block of water’ when stationary, what is it acting as when not stationary?
  19. Cheshire Cat advertise ‘ladies only’ training courses, which your wife may prefer. Prices are on their website, but that doesn’t look completely uptodate, as it reckons the next course is in August!
  20. If an item is sold as needing 12v, you would hope that it has inbuilt voltage regulation. It might be unwise to assume that it actually has.
  21. Unfortunately not, as these license increases are an attempt to mitigate the effect of the reduction in DEFRA grant.
  22. Genuine question - given that LiFe batteries have life-spans quoted in 1,000’s of cycles, is what constitutes ‘long term storage’? I kind of imagine a year or two, rather than a month or four?
  23. Presumably they require a pilot hole that the part before the thread can fit into?
  24. Correct. However, it is highly likely that most boaters do not check electrical cables for chafing, etc, so having the BSS bod do so, and advising if any defects are found, is “a good thing” - no?
  25. Disagree - how often do you check your electrical cables for nick's, chafing, etc??
