  1. John - your photos are awesome! Wow. We are not going to want our travels to end. Thank you for sharing.
  2. Thank you all once again. I am keeping a list of notes specifically from this forum - things to pack, where to stop, how to stop (!), pubs, horseflies, etc. This is all unbelievably helpful to someone who has never traveled via narrowboat. Those of you who are old hands may have to dig deep to figure out what a newbie needs. Loafer - I will try to post my trip report here afterwards! Mac/Quebec - Thanks for the info on Whitchurch.
  3. Goat - After crossing the Pond, we will be first spending 10 days in Ireland and then flying to Manchester in order to arrive in Chester! Chester looks beautiful and we wish we had more than one night to spend there. Hope to arrive late afternoon and then we have to leave the next day to get to Trevor to pick up our boat. Great minds think alike... Scholar - thanks for the Ellesmere advice. Cricket? I have heard it takes a lifetime to understand! Will check out Whixall Moss.
  4. Love all the suggestions. I am currently making my way through Mac's "Pub Cruise." Awesome list, Mac. We can't wait to scratch the surface. Ok - I have a really newbie question - If you want to make a stop for a pub or whatever how do you determine where to moor in order to reach your intended destination? For example, I am looking at the Bridge Inn (thanks, Mac) in Chirk. I see it on google maps satellite view, but can't tell where to moor to get to it. Perhaps it will be obvious. Thanks for your patience with questions like these. Pie - thanks for the list of water/rubbish stops. Much needed. Arbutus - will take a look at the Collins guide. Thank you. Loafer - I like your idea of going out for maybe just a couple days and then seeing what we want on the way back. I know we can't see it all in one week and will have to return! Tim - thanks for info on Jack Mytton. So the Montgomery? Maybe next year if we are successful enough on this trip. John - Of course I took your advice! That is what is so useful with forums such as these. We will look for the Kathleen on our travels. Ken - thank you for the welcome and advice about Llangollen.
  5. Good morning! It is so sun to wake up here in the US and see that my new friends in the UK have been responding to my post! Thank you. Definitely going to check out the steam railway in Llangollen - thanks for the tip. Mac - your Pub Cruise is an awesome guide. We will take it with us. John - I found your guide a while back and have it bookmarked - it is great. NB - I hadn't thought about how long we would have sunlight. Winter has been quite dreary even here in Arizona lately. Gets dark by 18:00. Southern Star/Graham - thanks for the suggestions. Arbutus - your rambling list is exactly the kind of thing we need. All those things you don't know that you need to know are great! I am going to take it along. Goat - I didn't think about needing to run engine to keep electricity! That's a great head's up. We have been to the UK before, but haven't run into too many grumps! Hopefully we are laid back travelers who don't demand (many) luxuries (we will see about that one...). Looking forward to as much charm as we can handle! Don't stop!
  6. Thank you, thank you! I appreciate the suggestions. Bigste - you made me grin from ear to ear. Keep suggestions/comments/corrections coming!
  7. Hello from Arizona USA - My group of 4 is planning a Narrowboat trip on the Llangollen Canal in June 2016. We have hired our boat from Anglo-Welsh starting at their Trevor base. This will be our first venture with a narrowboat and we are super excited. I asked my question on TripAdvisor forum and it was suggested that I post it here. We are trying to plan our route and it is getting confusing to say the least. Our mode is to go slow everyday, relax and enjoy the short time we have (7days). We would ideally like to plan stops at great pubs for lunch and/or dinner (sometimes we will cook) and also to visit any interesting towns on our route. Easy and chilled out are our words to live by! Here is our first attempt at an itinerary: Monday 6/13 - arrive at base; learn how to navigate boat; take off and travel for 2-3 hours. We will pick up boat around 14:00 so I imagine we will be ready to leave base by 16:00. We are thinking to cross the aqueduct and keep traveling to Chirk. Stop at a pub (where)? for dinner and moor somewhere? Tuesday 6/14 - Travel to Ellesmere (4.5 hours?) Take in the Tuesday market there. (how to get into town?) Moor ? Pub? Wednesday 6/15 Travel to Whitchurch (5.5 hours) Moor? Pub? Thursday 6/16 Mess around Whitchurch town (how to get into town?) for a bit and then turn around and head back towards Bettisfield. Travel 2-4 hours. Find pub? Moor? Friday 6/17 To Hindsford. Jack Myton Pub? (except I just read on here that it is closed?) Moor? Ideally, we would like to moor close to Llangollen so that the following day we can arrive early enough in Llangollen to enjoy the town. Saturday 6/18 to Llangollen. Enjoy/explore town. Sunday 6/19 Mess around Llangollen? Make our way back to Trevor to be close for returning the boat tomorrow. Moor? Pub? Monday 6/20 Return to Trevor base by 9:00. Return boat Ok. If you have read this far - thank you so much! I would dearly love for someone to help out with our itinerary. We need stopping places/interesting sites/pubs, etc. We also need ideas of where to purchase provisions. Yes, We have the Canal Companion Welsh Waters and it is very helpful. Yes, I have scoured the Canal Planner online. It is still overwhelming to first timers!
