  1. I didn’t demand anything. I gave a simple plan of what I wanted which actually worked out better for them as there were less windows and that was it. Incidentally I was still charged for the missing window because they had a basic price, funny thing is that if I wanted an extra window I would have been charged for it
  2. I’d heard of a hospital silencer and asked how much it would cost to have one fitted. I got a price of £5000 and I couldn’t afford that so I didn’t go for one. I’m shocked how cheap they are. I’ll look into having one retrofitted
  3. The engine is a water cooled Canaline at the stern with the exhaust at the side i was concerned about the engine overheating with foam type insulation
  4. I’ve searched for the subject ‘engine noise’ and was surprised to find no discussions on the subject, forgive me if I missed it Does anyone know a way to reduce the noise from the engine
  5. All done, the repair guy was on time and did a good job. Can continue cruising now 🙂
  6. Repair man coming today, said he'll be with me within the hour 🙂
  7. Well I've had word this evening that they'll come out to fix it on Friday about lunch time. Not what I wanted but at least they are coming. I think a week is a bit much though Things I've learned 1) Always carry jump leads 2) Never expect a rush, after all, it is a slow life 3) Always have spare water for emergencies 4) Take good advice and ignore condescending comments 5) Pay attention to the warning lights 6) Be humble 7) Learn more

  9. Thanks. I'd rather spend the right amount of money than spending twice.
  10. I'll look at a chandlers like Midland, I would have thought they would have a suitable one The alternator has been charging all day yesterday and also this morning, ~I say charging because the red charging light hasn't come on at all whereas it was on before the batteries died. Would that mean that it's likely to be OK now
  11. It's a new boat I like your photos How could leaving the immersion heater on damage the alternator, I would have thought doing that would possibly damage the batteries but certainly not the alternator. As it is, I haven't turned the Immersion heater on, I've not even tried it to see if it works because the waters been hot all the time as I've been cruising. I did turn the inverter on to see if it would boil a 1700 watt kettle, it turned on but I changed my mind and used the gas hob to finish it off. Other than that I haven't used the inverter at all. I've had the 2500 watt inverter set to charge only the rest of the time which is what the electrician recommended when I'm not using it So where do I get one from. I understand what you say about ebay and that is why I asked for advice on it
  12. It just looked like you said, lots of separate wires and 1000 amp, it sounds a lot to me. I've no idea what I need.
  13. Like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145050495492?hash=item21c5aeea04:g:7wwAAOSwjX9kRlZj&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4JboPZFVuygicr7J6qhdqk4PhxisvFcX9JdNzkoxd5F6gF52yDF4inMdI2zjLcg0zz6fhmU%2FEi2TJ2Zmoqv2GCnOkqHomAPvAvL7s%2B04fm6qkvljhgpy0GpF7%2BsYVLQtHNmk4PWue%2FczhfNeq1mcxy5um3gE7QF2aB2XCbldB2iHvD7P7SMq3sE%2Fp05aKsKbXI0aNfxOBLElWrYlQ7PdoBVK0ELMvonSyyRwHCWU79ftgTWkgBxnnCvIaQNciKAzACAJvUpEMH8sapHWjHI6%2BZxazM%2FOcJkjFIpoR6Y%2FPlMa|tkp%3ABFBMoPLcwoNi I don't mind the £200 but I would like the domestic bit covered. I'm going to Crick and if they are there I'll see what they can do It would clearly be a last resort, and as for actually going that far, why not, I've been successful in the past with the CC. It's very easy to do, but as I said, it's a last resort and hopefully they'll resolve the matter amicably
  14. An electrician said the same but I didn't have jump leads and couldn't get any where I was. I'll get some though for the future because I never know when I might need them
  15. If they don't agree to fix it on Monday I'll get CRR to do it for me and send them bill. If they don't pay, I'll take them to the county court, that's what is more likely to happen. They left me stranded at the side of the canal with access to drinking water so I don't think they'd have a leg to stand on. I don't want it to go that far but if needs must I will The reason I was asking about the AA style cover is for when the guarantee is up. An engine is a lump of metal to me. I know to check the oil and water everyday and now I've also been shown to check the tension on the fan belt. but that's about it
  16. I bought a new sail away and after one week there was a continuous beep from the engine controls, so I stopped cruising and contacted the company I bought from and as it was a Friday, they said I would have to wait until Monday before they could send anyone out. I then noticed there was very little 12 volt power. I phoned the company and told them I had no 12 volt power and couldn't even get water because the pump wouldn't work without the power, but I got the same response. So as I had CRR included with my insurance I contacted them and they came out and after checking the alternator the guy said and it was broke. I contacted the company I bought from again and told them and still got the same response. The guy from CRR said that as it was on the domestic side it wasn't covered with my policy but he told me that they could arrange it to be fixed for £165 plus parts. I contacted the company again and asked if I get CRR to fix it, would they reimburse me and the fella that I spoke to said he would try to get it approved but he didn't get an answer. In the meantime the CRR guy said I would be OK to cruise to a marina and that It wouldn't do any harm but the batteries wouldn't be getting charged, and then at the marina I would be able to charge the batteries, which I did. What I want to know, is there cover that I can get where I can get cover where the whole engine including the domestic side would be covered and also where there would be no call out charge, (I was charged £50 for the call out)
  17. I pushed to have the delivery charge removed and they relented and dropped it. I ended up just paying to have the boat put into the water 🙂
  18. The boat is a Collingwood and the only way of getting without a 12 month wait was to get it through Wincham wharf because they hove slots booked all the time, or a deal with them so they can get a quick window
  19. I hear what you're saying and I know that the expense is daft, but I just thought I should have been told at the outset In comparison to what I've spent it is a small amount but if you went into a retail shop and something cost £489 and they added the extra £1 to make it £490 would you pay it or would you query it. I would query it
  20. I never actually signed a contract and initially I was under the impression that delivery was included because no mention of it was made before I'd paid the £10,000 deposit, and even then there was no mention of the craning
  21. After buying a sailaway narrowboat through a broker and having it delivered to their yard, that they arranged and I paid for, does it sound right to you that the broker charge for the boat to be lifted off the truck and into their yard onto a hard standing. I was not told that I would be charged They've sent me an invoice for the hard standing that was agreed to, but they've included in the invoice a charge for the boat to be lifted off the truck into their yard.
  22. Well I've taken onboard (pun not intended) everything said on here and I thank you all for your input. I'm seeing the builder for final specs on Tuesday and I'll use some info from here to get the system I think will be right for me. You're all stars in your own way
  23. I'm getting a new wide beam and as I've only had a narrowboat in the past I know nothing about bow thrusters. The builder said he's fitting a "Vetus 96kgf bow thruster" and I can't even find it on the internet. Does anyone on here know anything about it and even if it exist, and also what would you recommend for a 60' wide beam
  24. I don't know what this has to do with my question I'm not shouting My eye's hurt when I use glasses and without them I can't see small print. I always thought shouting was using CAPS. The only way I could read your comment was to zoom in which is very inconvient
