I have followed this and the many other threads on this subject and being totally non-qualified, I will relate the way I understand alternator controllers. All alternators have controllers Elderly ones (alternators) have a controller that operates around the 13.8v mark (the actual age I am not sure of) Fitting an external controller will raise the voltage to about 14.4v In theory/practice this will aid charging. Modern alternators have a controller that operates at about 14.4v, so does not require the external one. Note: the 'about' is because different battery types require different voltages. Of course I may be talking out of my posterior.

Well Fishface, welcome. I do admire those that want to live outside the norm, I don't by the way, just one point finding an allotment maybe more difficult than finding a mooring. Local news (Midlands) went to an allotment the other night and the waiting list was ten ( yes 10) years. Apparently everyone wants one because of the cost of living rises, another I don't. Good luck
