  1. Just curious, why did you ask about a suitable thickness of steel if you had settled on using 5mm anyway? Being a welder i'd imagine you would have a reasonable idea anyway.

  4. It would of course be a mistake to check the level immediately after running any engine. If he has no visible coolant it would be best topped up before running, it may be useful if you could suggest a suitable coolant if you have the same engine. If it is the first there may be a bigger problem behind it, not usually a good omen losing oil and coolant at the same time.
  5. Backing the nuts off a turn or two would be excessive, 1/2-3/4 of a turn would be ample. Don't be concerned if there is no dripping, a drop in temperature and drag on the shaft is all you require.

  9. You have nothing to lose by backing off the two nut 1/2 a turn, run in gear. After a few minutes see what you've got, i am certain the situation won't be any worse.
  10. The only issue we had with these was due to the contacts being slightly rough, easily solved with a light abrasive.
  11. Mick moved Umea regularly, we were neighbours for a number of years and he used to take her down to the services at least once a fortnight. We saw Umea coming back through Marsworth but that would have been 15 years ago. One of the better sounding Bolinders in my opinion, starts like a cannon!
  12. Yes, Umea is there. I'm not sure what the future holds though. The back end was rebuilt but i would imagine the upkeep of two wooden boats is beyond all but millionaires and charities. I do wonder if the difference in condition between bow, stern and midships causes the tar boats to hog so often?
  13. The vee bottom may be an asset if set into a gravel soak away, having nowhere for water to sit against. Could look stunning planted up with cornflowers, love in a mist, etc. to give the impression of water around the hull.
  14. I am not personally involved in breaking her up but will certainly ask what the plan is for the ironwork, with a view to handing it to someone serious about putting it to use in the future.

    The difference being that when these waterways were in commercial use the maintenance would have been reactive, many of those lifting pawls to save wear and tear would have experienced canals in decline. A situation that has in many areas is returning, with breakages not being addressed and a more likely solution being a bag taped over the paddle gear for a couple of years.
  17. Definitely not, and there are certainly more efficient insulation materials available now. Saying that, i've yet to see a cabin rust out from the inside without other aggravating factors. A big plus for rockwool on older craft is that it is safer for welding repairs carried out without an interior strip out, including early spray foam.

    I'm sure you are correct, and would hazard a guess that as the cog that engaged with the pawl wore out, replacing it would be expensive and involve stripping down to remove as it appears to be part of the entire spindle arrangement.

    Thanks, that's interesting as when you look at them its hard to picture any way for a ratchet to be attached. I assume there was either a problem with failure of this mechanism or an unacceptable level of maintenance required due to being engaged all the time?
  21. I don't see why you couldn't have a temporary one made, possibly bolted together so it could be dismantled for storage. Aluminium won't deteriorate over the occasional long weekend, there are many grades available anyway. If yours is like the one pictured there will be no risk of sinking.
  22. May well struggle on a full length boat but probably good up to 45ft or so, i wouldn't want to be flat out all the time on a motor with limited spares!

    Each to their own, but having suffered one injury i will continue to lift them off and replace manually. Even though they have clearly been modified, the situation now has been deemed adequate and i would doubt the original set up would involve a ratchet.
