  1. Nitromors contained Dychloromethane. It was the stripping agent. Two things to know are that there is no threshold for Dychloromethane as a carconogen. Secondly, it advises no smoking on the tin leaving people to think it was flammable. Not so, Dychloromethane vapour when drawn through the the ember of a cigarette produces phosgene, a gas which attacks the central nervous system. It has been banned worldwide for good reason.
  2. We have been at Ely cathedral marina for 3 years now. My wife works in Cambridge and enjoys the walk to the station. Ely is a lovely City with all amenities. It is not an inexpensive mooring, but you get what you pay for. We take our boat out at every opportunity and especially in the summer it can be difficult to find an overnight mooring. 3. As I understand it, there is no such thing as a permanant live aboard mooring. You have to be off the boat 30 days each year. The boat can stay, but you should not. I have no idea who polices this as people come and go. Holidays etc. It is without doubt the best decision we ever made to buy a boat. Good luck.
  4. I am moored on the Ouse at Ely. The rowing coaches have purpose built catamarans. Ift they go past at anything other than a crawl they have a terrible wake and plenty of rocking ensues. the problem is they let the rowers have a 5 minute start and then rush to catch them. As for proper mooring technique, This river rises and falls by over a foot in no time. tight ropes are not an option.
  5. My pumpout fittings are on the port side of my boat. To get to the pump out station I need to go to the left hand side of the river. I have been doing this every fortnight for 3 years now. I use horn signals when neccessary and most people are fine with that, but I have been shouted at a few times by helpful boaters telling me that I am on the wrong side.
  6. We too are on Cathedral marina and have been for 3 years now. We have investigated many options for moorings, but If you work in Cambridge you need to bite the bullet and see if you can get on here. While the argument continues over the 48 hour moorings, they are all full. Best of luck. It is Erica. It is moored in Ely. I think it is a former tour boat with front steering.
  7. I was told by an experienced boater that (Weather permitting) if you bring your boat to a stop gently, then drop it into reverse tick over it may well go straight. My boat was a monster until I tried this. Depending on wind and flow I can usually get my boat to go straight back. As a side issue, If I put my boat into full reverse when moving forward, prop walk will act as a stern thruster steering my stern to port. I use this to my advantage, bringing the stern in and using the centre rope. Hope this helps.
