  1. Looking at the photo of Zoe I would say he/she is moored at that precise place to get a signal for the sat dish as there is a gap in the trees in the direction which the dish is pointing, further back the trees are taller. Mind you I don't think this is a legitimate reason for mooring where it has but boaters moor in all sorts of strange places for all sorts of strange reasons. Whats your guilty pleasure ??
  2. The boat did have the Hammerite above the waterline prior to it being blacked with Rytex in March but I am not sure how much of the Hammerite got blasted off when the hull was pressure washed prior to the rytex blacking, I know it may seem strange using the garage door paint above the waterline but when I first used it was about the only gloss black paint I could find at that time but I did find it very easy to apply and it did not react with what was put on the boat previously (some bitumen based paint).
  3. Re Rylards Rytex - I had this stuff put on in March of this year, on the tin it says it is a pleasent satin finish, in my case it has turned a matt grey colour which as I am a fully paid up member of the shiney boat brigade I do not find pleasent at all and have been to B and Q today and bought some Hammerite Garage door paint in Black and will be painting over the Rytex with this stuff, I have used it in the past above the water line and it stays glossy and is very easy to apply and re coat when you have bumped into various canal furniture. The Rytex below the water line is another story, at the moment it is bubbleing nicely and falling off in great chunks. According to Rylards it is due to the hull of my boat having been primed from new with a epoxy primer. This primer is beige in colour and obviously sticks out like a sore thumb where the rytex has fallen off around the water line. The jury is still out at the moment ????
  4. Thanks for the info guys, have decided to stick with the 3 network and use the marina wifi for a back up .
  5. The marina I am in has just gone live with its Wifi service, it is using a insecure system provided by a company called Park Wifi so there is no security like wep encryption like you would use on a home internet connection. You have to log on with a user name and password to use the system but I am a little concerned re the ''insecure'' part of the set up. I am asuming that the set up we have here is similar to what you would get in wifi hotspots in hotels and airports etc. I am new to hot spots etc and have been connecting to the net via my usb dongle from 3. Does anyone have any experience in improving the security when you use this type of internet connection, I use the internet for banking and shopping on line so I am reluctant to use an insecure system for this. I have tried to research a thing called VPN but it lost me quite quiclkly, at present I use a free anti virus software called Avira, is it a case of buying a decent Internet security software such as Kaspersky or similar to allow one to use these hotspots safely ?????? any advice would be appreciated thanks
  6. Very sad news for all concerned. I have never witnessed a boat fire and have no wish to do so but I do have a question for anyone that has more experience than me in such matters. How easily does a fire spread from one boat to another ? I know it is a little bit of a how long is a peice of string question but any input would be welcome. The reason I ask is becuase I sometimes worry about how near some boats moor to one another, I try not to moor within 15 yards of another boat and nose to tailing is a strict no no for me. I know some moorings are very popular and are always jammed packed but surely boaters who do moor so close run the risk of someone elses mistake taking there boat down too ??? or vice versa. Sorry to be such a gloom and doom merchant
  7. Listening to Jeremy Vine show today on radio 2. Subject was people living in static caravans and not paying council tax (Henious offence). One lady caller to the show remarked that she lived on a caravan park next to a canal and said people should be more concerned about the DOSSERS that live on the canal who do not pay council tax and just swan around from town to town, a bit harsh me thinks but on looking up the Cambridge distionary definition of a DOSSER might give an option to debate ---DOSSER - ''SOMEONE WHO HAS NO HOME OR MONEY'' or ''A VERY LAZY PERSON'' Now I have very little money, my boat is my home and I have been known to laze about and drink cider - So maybe the caller is right - I wonder how many more Dossers there are ?????????
  8. I e-mailed British Waterways just yesterday asking for an update and they replied that they expect Shebdon to open as scheduled on the 24th October.
  9. Bow thrusters have been done to death on this forum, as is usual there is a definate divide in the camp and these have been derided as ''GIRLY BUTTONS'' by the purists, when I ordered my boat I did not have much experience of canal matters and so as I could afford it at the time I had my boat fitted with one, as you gain more experience in moving your boat they become less used but if I was asked again I would have one fitted, the Aqualine has an option of just having the tube fitted and the rest at a later date, I would not go down this route as a retro fit of the thruster and electrics would be a right faff. They are a definate boon when wishing to move your boat in a tight space when travelling at very low speeds or when stopped. Just my opinion of course.
  10. We have a Aqualine Manhattan, and have been living on it for nearly 4 years now, I can obviously only speak from personal experience but I can not fault the Aqualine range, built in Poland the workmanship is to a very high standard and the range now offered combats the off the peg tag that some people think is a draw back. I think the higher secondhand prices for these boats reflects the quality of these boats. I believe the Madison is the reverse lay out i.e. bedroom at the front - kitchen at the back, I have never seen the advantage of this set up but that is another can of worms that can be opened later. Good luck with your search
  11. E-mail reply today from BW after I enquired about the progress on fixing Shebdon Embankment: The situation at present is that we hope to re-open the canal at Shebdon Embankment by the October half term which is w/c 26th October however we cannot guarantee this date at this stage. We would advise that you keep an eye on our website www.waterscape.com for further updates/information
  12. I could not believe my eyes when I saw a boat called WET DREAMS, it was some time ago now and I can't remember where it was, the couple onboard were of over retirement age and I just wondered if they knew of the alternative meaning of the name ??????????
  13. I too have always been interested in the Linux operating system but until recently I could not find a distribution that worked with all my hardware and software requirements in particular the mobile broadband dongle from 3 that I use onboard. My last attempt was with Linux Mint (which I believe is Ubuntu based), the 3 dongle was plug and play straight from the off so I was very pleased with it except I then had a problem with no sound which I believe has been a problem with the latest version called Gloria ???. Anyway I shelved it again to return at a later time. As for netbooks I can reccomend a recent purchase of mine the Asus Eee 1000he, It only has a 10 inch screen but it is a very nice piece of kit and am using it in the bedroom as a web surfer, small tv and anything else one uses a computer for, these netbooks mostly come with windows XP installed so you have none of the Vista complaints. Hope this helps in your decision regards
  14. Thanks very much - appears we have another ''character'' on the tow path
  15. Unless I have missed it do we have a description of this Mr Finch i.e. age, build etc. so we can all keep an eye out for him. I had a an interseting meeting with a chap when we were on the Leicester Arm of the GU just below Foxton a couple of weeks ago, a chap knocked on the side of the boat and asked us if we would fill his water bottle for him which we did, he then asked if he could buy a tin of beans from us, we did not have any beans so could not oblige. He then asked where the next village was and was pointed in the direction of Foxton locks, he set off that way but a very short time later came back and headed south again ?????, the following days when heading south we noticed someone had been lighting fires in the middle of the towpath and we suspected it had been this chap on his overnight stops. This chap was in his late twenties, thin, light coloured long hair and very unkept look (I suppose you would look like that if you are sleeping rough). He had a pushbike and had a few posessions on a trolley type thing that he pulled along behind the bike he also had a small brown dog with him. The next sighting we had of him was just the other day heading south on the GU below Stoke Bruerne. I have no idea if this was Mr Finch or if this chap does get up to anything illegal but he certainly seems down on his luck and it appears he now has punctures in both his tyres on his trolley thing. !!!!!!!

  22. If you want to stay with a conventional white tile look you may like to consider a plastic tile that is sold in Wilkinsons. When our boat was new it was tiled with a ceramic tile and after about a year started to shift, as I am not the worlds best tiler and have always found it difficult to cut ceramic tiles we went for these plastic tile, they are easy to cut with scissors and very light weight. W e stuck them on with ''no more nails'' and then grouted them with the ready made grout that Wilkinson sell with these tiles. They are very shiney and easy to wipe clean.

  24. We did the Lancaster Canal last year, Ribble Link is a experience in itself, the canal is well worth visiting and any extension would be welcome.
  25. Getting back to fishing on the K and A -----I think you will find that most of it is leased out to various angling clubs and the river sections at the eastern end observe the close season. Once on the canal section there is no close season, i found the fishing excellent for carp once past Pewsey, you also lose the railway for peace and quiet. As I remember most of the angling clubs dont allow day tickets either so if you dont join the various clubs you will be being naughty. I am all for paying my way when I fish but the no day tickets idea is annoying and smacks of angling clubs not being broad minded and anti boating. Maybe B.W. should make it a condition of leasing waters to clubs that they allow day tickets. Some chance. Happy fishing
