  1. OT too, but a friend of mine bought a pie at a football match, bit into it and found just half an inch of brown sludge in the bottom. He went back and asked the girl behind the counter what flavour it was meant to be. She gave him a look and said "piiiiee" (badly spelled to suggest elongation of the word). He didn't feel he could complain after that really!
  2. Hi there Some of you may remember that we had a problem a few months ago where our toilet blocked and would not flush. In the end, we contacted Black Prince, who gave us instructions on how to change the electrics so the pump 'blew' instead of 'sucked' and on the odd occassion it's happened since, that has worked fine. This time, we've reversed the polarity to no effect and also the toilet has now stopped making any sort of pumping noises at all, so when we press the button, literally nothing happens. Can anyone give us any help or put us in touch with anyone in the Newark area who could come and fix it? Thanks Karen and Keith
  3. I did think twice about posting to be honest, especially following the post from someone who suggested that people who moor at burton waters are putting on the dog but I thought I'd nail my colours to the mast As a few people have said, it's horses for courses. The world would be terrible boring if we all thought the same.
  4. Sadly, it's very reasonable for the Lincoln/Newark area. We'd love to be bankside but before the mooring tender pilot there were 27 boats on the waiting list and the tender drove the most recent prices for a mooring in Lincoln up to £5250 a year. We're just about to sign a contract at Burton Waters and hope we'll be very happy there. Where we are now is not as nice and is more expensive. See you for a pint in the Woodcock once we've settled in, Phylis.
  5. Thanks for all your help so far. this is really useful stuff. Is there a specific definition of a houseboat then? i.e. not just a boat you live on (sorry to sound thick) EDIT - sorry I am thick - have just checked the link properly and I see the definition is no self-propulsion.
  6. Hadn't thought of that - but surely they have to do a VAT return anyway? Would it create a lot more difficulty for them if some of the fees were VAT exempt and some not?
  7. Hi. I've done a search on VAT and haven't found any topics so apologies if this has been discussed before but... We live on our boat and currently moor in a marina, where we pay VAT on our mooring fee. Our neighbour gets Housing Benefit, which tells me that the Council accepts that some or all of the mooring charge is rent. Surely that means that some or all of the mooring fee should be VAT-exempt? Anyone on here know more about this than I do? I'm wondering whether to have a chat with Customs and Excise. Ta in advance. Karen
  8. Hi Newbird. Some marinas do say you can only get a mooring if you buy from them - usually these are the ones who are full or nearly full so you might struggle to get in otherwise. If you don't mind a commute, we're at Kings Marina in Newark and there are vacancies here at present.
  9. Congratulations. We bought ours 2 Christmases ago and have been living aboard for 18 months. Do you have a moorng or are you off constant cruising?

  13. LOL. We've just gone for an immersion heater and we love it! No more boiling the kettle to wash up! We didn't have a boss to fit the immersion so had to replace the tank - my MIL bought it for us as a belated boat-warming present and it cost £350. Money well spent - especially as it wasn't my money Wish we'd done it ages ago.
  14. "Hekaterine" is also an ex-BP boat; Duchess Class and originally called Dorset. We've had her for two years. I'll get some before and after pics for you. Karen x
  15. You might want to get a copy of Going It Alone - a guide to single-handed boating http://www.canaljunction.com/boat/singleorder.htm
