  4. That Chinese engine was very loud, I didnt have any neighbours so it didnt matter but I did eventually bury the exhaust in the ground. That generator was left in Greece when I moved here to the UK. Those engines can be found very cheaply on Ebay, New I paid 250 pounds about. Any high speed, 3000rpm, diesel would do. A lister petter would be better. The couplings are easily found and a few minutes with a lathe, job done. Belt drive would be easy to if the bus/coach alternator had a pulley. 24v landrover alternators are on Ebay.
  5. Here is a picture of a Chinese diesel engine that I bought and coupled it to an old alternator of a coach. 120A at 24v, diesel was doing about 2500 RPM.
  6. Panels are max 30v each. Controller has 150v max input. No problem with that.

Dont forget to connect the controller to the battery first so it can detect your battery voltage and then connect the solar panels afterwards. Make sure you get the positives and negatives correct check everything twice before the final connection.
  8. Diesel fuel attracts and absorbs water it is hydroscobic. Normal diesel contains about 0.02% water and when it absorbs more and more up to about 0.1% then the water starts to drop out into the bottom of the tank. When the fuel is warm, summer, it can hold double or triple the amount of water than in the winter. So in every 100 litres of fuel it is normal to have 1/10th litre dissolved water.
  9. Unfortunately those cheap MPPT regulators are not MPPT. They are just regular pwm regulators with MPPT written on them as a NAME. A real MPPT regulator will boost the output amps, easily measurable with a clamp on DC ammeter, ie input 10 amps output 18 amps. Also a real MPPT regulator is fairly chunky, it has a large high frequency transformer inside. BUYER BEWARE
  10. Excellent thread I hope everyone is reading and understanding.. There's certainly no sign of it by peering into the cells. All lead-grey and lovely. The plates should be alternately grey and chocolate brown with no white spots(sulphation)

  14. All flooded batteries need about 50 cycles before they reach their full capacity. Just charge them at 15.5v for 3 or 4 hours (equalise) after you have fully charged them and they will be fine. From Trojan website.

Option 3 is incredibly expensive, for that sort of money you could buy 3 Rolls batteries with 1280 cycles to 50% DOD and a SEVEN year warranty like the RB-31HT120 http://www.windandsun.co.uk/products/Batteries/Rolls-Batteries#.VMfjbi4prWl You will notice that those American leisure batteries do not publish how many cycles they are good for, In other words steer clear. At least with the Rolls batteries you know you can run them down at least 1280 times, probably 8 years if you run them down every 2 days. Most if not all leisure batteries are only good for 200/400 cycles to 50% DOD if you are lucky. How about a pair of RB-S550 6v batteries at about 500Ah that should last a week!! only 248 pounds each before vat and 120 kilos in weight!

  22. BS 7671 Appendix 2 section 14. The UK supply 230 V +10% - 6% 216.2v to 253v. If your voltage drops outside this you must inform your supplier and they will install a measuring device at your property. Then they will upgrade the transformer so this no longer happens.
