Rochdale & HNC both currently closed again and it's only April 15

"Please be advised navigation remains closed at Lock 28 West on the Diggle Flight on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal due to broken paddles".

"We continue to experience significant water management problems at lock 8 on the Rochdale Canal. Leakage through the lock gates is creating ongoing local difficulties in navigation,"

    What happened to Winter Maintenance?
When will the C&RT apologists realise Parrry & Co are a waste of space?

I'm booked for lock 1e on Friday this week and the 2 flood locks are closed ATM (can't blame crt) if not open by Thursday afternoon I'm snookered as I could miss my passage through stanage tunnel with only 3 boats a week allowed. Next available in May 😱

Could be worse- you could be the wrong side of River Lock/Leeds at the end of May- hopefully anyone that is can wizz through in that week as one (hopefully) opens before that shuts.

    Type: Navigation Closure
    Reason: Repair

    Original message:

Works are required to River Lock as it is struggling to achieve a level and is consuming an unusually high amount of water that on occasion leaves Granary Wharf basin above short of water, preventing onward navigation. To mitigate this we have to date restricted operating hours whilst our engineers have worked to develop a solution. We have now taken the difficult decision to carry out repair works between May and July. We considered waiting for the next winter stoppage period, but had concerns that this was not the right decision for a number of reasons. Carrying out the works now, avoids working in a river in winter. The risk of flooding is higher in winter and our recent experiences of flooding across the country suggested that minimising this risk as much as possible was preferable to ensure as smooth as practical a programme. A further consideration was the unknown nature of the defect to the lock. The lock is losing a lot of water from, a not as yet fully diagnosed defect. With this uncertainty there is the potential it could get worse and fail unexpectedly. As this is a significant structure connecting the canal with the river and the pound above the lock is a popular site for visiting boats, we were concerned that the impact of a failure at this location would be higher than at other locations on the canal. Because of the defect, the lock currently needs to be manned by our team and this takes resource away from the maintenance of the canal. We are not able to man it all times due to resource limitations and so this already limits when boaters can currently go through the lock. We appreciate this decision is not ideal but hope you can understand our reasoning; our aim is to ensure the lock is fully operational as soon as possible.

Spoke too soon. Had to book Standedge tunnel earlier than expected as they have only 1 passage left in April. Now running round to rearrange everything. You watch the bloody river will be in flood again. 😡😡

I don't think we do but we are keeping quiet about it 🙂 . I have heard on the grapevine that some suppliers are quite happy with zero propulsion for any boats but I couldn't possibly comment on that !

If the origin poster is not on a residential mooring. Best not to kick up a fuss. Either pay the 60/40 or get it in cans if possible or allowed by the marina.

A friend was asked to turn a longer than normal tiller handle for a boater who has a square back cruiser stern, as it’s difficult to reach the throttle when doing certain manoeuvres. I found this is quite a common problem  on cruiser sterns. Below is the finished longer handle attached to tiller bar.

I would like to ask members with Cruiser sterns for their opinions on this and do you think there would be a market for them. Thank you.

You could offer a quick fit option for the end to make it into a cabin shaft, keb, weed hatch hook, washing line post. The list is endless. 😁👍

I haven't run my generator since going out cruising in October. Mind you, the boat's been plugged into shoreline all winter... 😉

(and hasn't used any shore power for the last couple of weeks, solar has been enough -- no domestic use though...)

So all electric like I said then.

The fuel tank had 500 litres in when I bought it so haven't needed any until now!

    Your options are.

1 move boat to diesel point and pay the split

2 move the boat onto the canal and use a fuel boat or another supplier who will do self declaration.

3 fill containers from a supplier who doesn't care what you use it for.

4 sell boat and buy another one with a full diesel tank. And repeat when empty.

    Hope that helps 😁

The likes of Whilton give you the keys to 3 boats, you go on your own (no escort), view the boats, go back and get another 3 sets of keys and view some more.

Go in the Cafe and have a monster Fry-up.

Go back to the sales office and get another 3 sets of keys, repeat, repeat, repeat.

Followed by a vist to the hospital to check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. 😁
