  2. Wrong. There are British/International standards: please refer to BS EN ISO 10133:2001, compliance is required for the RCD. It applies to all boats, including narrowboats.
  3. methinks the OP should spend a week browsing this forum where all the matters raised have been discussed to exhaustion.

  5. sorry, you need to keep up. since political correctness came into vogue the rigour and the basic laws of science including chemistry have been relaxed and now anything goes, as long as you can fill a sheet of A4 with your explanation in the exam room.

  7. there certainly appear to be 'continuous residers' there. I launched on their slipway in 2014 - there was a singular absence of any management, the toilet block was a shambles; it seemed that one of the 'residents' was looking after the place informally.
  8. some people believe in roses and castles and false rivets..............................

  12. a roller inevitably leaves pimples/mottled appearance. a good brush leaves it smooth with faint ridges which should even out and go dead flat within a minute or so, if the paint consistency is right. there was a video showing a roller and brush expert painting his boat - someone will provide the link. EDIT: ...................... crossed in the process with post #9
  13. I wholeheartedly agree that cyclists using shared paths should use a bell. ................... but you must realise that using the towpath as a workshop is not in the spirit of a shared path. ...... yes, I noted that you say 'beside the towpath' but I assume that your work impinges on the towpath otherwise you wouldn't be bothered about cyclists.
  14. I found this link to the nobels manual but it came with a virus warning: http://takemyfreethingsplease.com/nobels-bow-thruster-manual.html

  16. if right-handed work top to bottom, right to left, in vertical stripes narrow enough to allow you to keep a wet edge.
  17. a mini (short) set of metric ring/open-end spanners and mini (short handled) hammer. I have a garage/workshop stuffed with tools, but I mange to get by 99% of the time with a few simple tools in a small plastic toolbox, plus the necessary power tools of course (cheapo B&Q drill/driver and a Bosch multitool fulfil most requirements).

  19. fascinating how really small some of them were, especially the last picture. I believe the smaller ones were mainly used to ferry men off the beach to larger ships.
  20. what pees me off on a river (Avon near Bath) is when I moor up at 7pm and settle down for a quiet evening, and then several plastic cruisers come bombing past in the twilight, at 9pm+ obviously trying to get back to their berths before it is totally dark, and usually sporting beer glasses because they've been on an evening trip to the pub.
  21. actually I find it doesn't bond very well unless the surfaces are degreased and slightly damp. it is very sticky but doesn't actually seem to bond to smooth surfaces. when cleaning it off it is easy with a spatula, even on wood. it just comes away in flakes leaving the surface clean. but for a ceiling lining it will do just fine as long as you don't hang a swing chair from it and bang on the roof with a sledgehammer!
  22. just looked a bit suspish to me - I imagined a lurker under the canopy - must be my mind
  23. hey! what you doin under that cover?!
