  2. the word useful is shirley very pertinent here. perhaps the solution is for all winter moorings (many/most of which are just used as boat storage facilities) to be miles from anywhere, i.e. not useful for the genuine cruising boatowner.
  3. bring back national service, that's wot I say ...................... there'd be a little more respect for the rest of society and a little less anti-social free-thinking loutery.
  4. please don't. we are sufficiently confused already.

  6. .................... according to Biscuits this topic is limited to street-lighting, and no, I didn't read the questions - better things to do .... but Jen, surely the issue isn't about waterproof writing materials, it would be more about whether, during these gloomy winter months, you could fill in the questionnaire while sitting in the bath if the street-lighting in the vicinity is inadequate for you to see what you are doing. I am of course assuming that the socially-challenged boat dwellers in this notorious location will only have candles for their bathroom lighting.

  8. I might comment that many folk who live in boats moored along the Avon and the western end of the K&A canal may not be complying with the Authority's rules related to mooring and/or living aboard and therefore some or most of them are unlikely to give you honest answers to your questions. Are you aware of C&RT's position on these matters? If not, there are thousands of relevant posts on hundreds of threads on this website, which you may like to read as background material.

  11. drag from draught? I assume you are referring to the drag related to the displacement of water while moving through relatively shallow (and narrow in many cases) water rather than surface friction. I don't believe that a well-designed pencil shaped hull moving in deep water (where surface area / friction drag is the main component) will be significantly slower that a similar but more shallow hull (at typical canal speeds), and the directional stability will be better. PS ............... I've just seen your reply to Jen - confirming the drag displacement factor.
  12. if you are going DIY it is well worth buying a heavy duty crimping tool and a cable cutter, you can always sell them on when you have finished, but in my case I found them worth retaining.

  16. Mike, my 2005 Scouseboat sailaway (Annexe 3) did not have an HIN - the only reference would have been a works hull number. The HIN was applied for by the "builder" - the one who completes the boat - i.e. you or me. In my case, as a private person, the HIN was issued by the RYA when I completed the RCD paperwork.
  17. or you could sell the boat and buy another that has no broken windows - yes I know that is a stupid comment but replacing items (even car parts) can be very frustrating. I would be tempted to buy a new window and Nike - "Just Do It" - frustrating drilling new holes and sealing the frame in the cabin side, but a guaranteed result if the overall dimensions match.
  18. just to clarify - that is not an angle grinder fit - specifically it fits an ordinary rotary tool with a chuck. ..... oh, and you don't need to buy two of them.
  19. it wouldn't work Mike. Council Tax is based on the price or value assessed on a certain date in the past - and as Zoopla shows, the value of a home is quite easy to get (roughly) right, especially where 90% of homes are on a street of similar homes. Unless folk all buy boats at an advertised or registered price there is no way that I can think of to assess the value of a boat unless you employ an army of boat surveyor/valuers (who would never get permission to access to the inside of most boats). Few boats (even new ones) are sold at a fixed price, unlike cars (well, that is before the onset of on-line car dealers anyqay)
  20. (b) only applies if you believe in resurrection.
  21. well it would be nice if you could just give us a linky so we can judge the impact of the document for ourselves, convoluted or not ................... I would also comment that limiting the questionnaire to 2021 excludes me because personal issues kept me shore-bound until September and I have only managed short day trips since then. I would comment that having an electrically powered boat leaves me vulnerable to finding that hook-up moorings at locks are already occupied or out of order because the "booking system" is useless mainly because IMHO only one of the lockies with hook-up facilities ever replies to his phone, and the remainder never call back despite inviting the caller to leave a message. ............. oh. and the commitment that I understand was given by the EA to the Electric Boat Association to treat electrically powered boats as a priority has not been honoured. In one case I found a plastic gin palace on the hook-up, and the owner told me he plans and books his trips a year in advance and always uses the hook-up points so he can do the laundry and watch telly without worrying about the state of his probably huge battery bank. Not very helpful for an electric boater who plans his trips based on the forecast of sunny weather in the hope that the solar panels will contribute to the cruising range.

  23. very bad design, deliberately introducing tripping hazards where you are s'posed to put your size nines. obvs no elfinsafety review was undertaken.
  24. I've travelled on the M4 a few times recently and was most disappointed not to see that illuminated sign in the central reservation that used to read "THIS SIGN IS NOT IN USE".
  25. gently put your bow snubber into the side of the offending moored boat, give it full left lock and full throttle. when/if they complain you have an opportunity to edumicaite the ignorant.
