  9. When we hired from Bruce Boats on the K&A it was a requirement to run the engine a certain number of hours a day - and be responsible for any battery damage if you didn't. Mind, these were fully disabled accessible with motorised lifts front and back, charging points for Powerchairs and the like. I was having a gentle "nose" (as you do out of curiosity) at the 240v, 24v and twin 12v electrical systems and found a neat rack of USB data loggers - presumably Bruce Boats had been caught often enough in a "yes we did", "no you didn't" for it to be worthwhile being able to prove "look, Tuesday you didn't start the engine until 10:00 and stopped at 13:00"
  10. Thanks Ray As Ian's other Son, it's good to add yet more background to our knowledge of Ian - we thought we knew him, but Patrick and I learned a few new stories during Dad's funeral...
  11. And others where the explosion happened at the bottom of steep gradients... Same logic.
  12. https://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/docsummary.php?docID=3813 And PRV = Pressure Relief Valve - fitted to all good hot water systems where an NRV (Non Return Valve) may prevent expanding water going back from whence it came... (cold water tank)
  13. Locomotive PRV's are called "safety valves" for a good reason (I'm not sure we've yet had a thread "how do I wire the PRV shut so i can get a proper hot shower" but I'm sure it's coming...) There's a story of a rail fitter in Wolverton works in the 1800's who was "annoyed" by the sound of discharging steam; so he screwed the safety valve down. The locomotive retaliated by slicing his ear off when it exploded...
  14. I was vaguely tempted with applying - I'm on the site at least once a day, although a (relatively) infrequent poster. The main reason I didn't apply is that my Brother, @magpie patrick is a Mod and (I think) does an excellent job. I don't wish to undermine his considerable efforts by being accused, "you're only supporting him because he's your brother" [trying hard to get all apostrophes in the right place...]
  15. "I stand corrected" "Your honour, I was asked to move the boat, I'm now being charged with moving it without permission?" (although, as a Parish Councillor, I should expect nothing less...)
  16. Sorry - I need permission to lift my own boat out? (to clarify - I know I need permission from the landowner to actually lift; I get that I need permission for a large load on a lorry on the highway but do I need CRT permission to reach out over their water and lift a vessel vertically from it?
  17. I'm sure that at one time "Mod's" could not be given Greenies? It looks like they now can.
  18. I told you - stop apologising! An unpaid volunteer (which may not have been you) missed a renewal - unless you are up at 00:05 every night (local time, which may not be UK) thinking "I wonder if it's still working", these things happen. And a DNS renewal also takes time to percolate through the system, that's how it works. Now, thanks for keeping the site up 99.98 percent of the time.
  19. There is a rumour that airline pilots carry enough gold on every trip to refuel the 747 / Airbus and get home again - just in case things go totally T*** Up and "no, we don't recognise your BA credit card"
  20. Are not required - you work hard for this site.
  21. It was also about the 18th December... I don't think Mrs 1st Ade would have been pleased at Christmas with no hob. To be fair, the old hob was well used - what I found surprising was that the (almost identical) new Neff hob had taps that were so light to turn on (or knock on) they would have been a definite hazard if it wasn't for the flame failure device
  22. (Potentially) happens on land as well - we had a kitchen extension just over three years ago where the hob and oven (and, to be honest, pretty much every other fitting) were carefully removed and put aside - during the second fix the Gas Engineer looked at the hob and said "it's nearly Christmas, I'll put it back if you promise to replace it in the new year" - he then explained the potential issues of a boiling saucepan dousing the flame...
