  1. I used the existing cabling. It looks to me to be fairly appropriate for the job. Much thicker than any of the wiring for the lights. I also kept the same fuse. However I installed a whale gulper and the previous pump seemed a lot less serious! What size wiring is advised for a whale gulper?
  2. I am troubleshooting a waste pump issue and can't find the solution. Here's what's happened: Installed whale gulper Worked fine for 2 months The speed of pump slowed down massively Pump then stopped working I have tested with multimeter the system and the beep indication of connectivity doesn't go on. Changed fuse - still no power through system What could it be? I'm pretty sure no lose connection, could the wiring have burnt out over time?
  3. Hi all Firstly thank you all so much for your advice. It has been extremely useful and I feel confident with what I should do next. In response to a previous question I am running. 2 kW kipor generator through a victron multiplus. I am going to buy a hydrometer and smartgauge this week and give them a go/ hopefully begin to get to the route of the problem. If I have any trouble I will be sure to ask you again for your kind advice! I will also keep you posted with my progress Thanks again, Angus
  4. I would say on an average day. Maybe 30- 60 minutes 12v iphone charger. One or two lights on for an hour roughly. Water pumps for washing up and one shower per day.
  5. I'm using the reading on what I belive is the solar charge controller
  6. Hi all, I have a query in regards to my batteries that I hope someone might help me with. I currently have a set up of 7 batteries. I charge then using a 2kw generator. When I turn the genny on they go to 99%. I also have solar panels that when the day is sunny take the batteries to 99% Now the problem I find is that whenever I put an appliance on. Say my laptop with 12v charger the battery percentage drops suddenly. It seems to plumit very quickly. On days where I use very little power the battery goes from 99 - 65 And in the morning it's always very low. I am very conscious not to ruin my batteries but I want to be able to use more power and surely I should be able to??!! Any help would be greatly recieved Thanks
  7. Hello, firstly thank you all so much for replying to my message and your willingess to help me. I am also sorry to take so long to reply but thought i would wait until i had more information. I now can tell you more things and have added many more photos to photobucket. please see below. -the starter battery is flat and wont start the engine but does have enough power to work the bilge pump which is attached. - the leisure batteries must be flat as they do not power the water pump or shower. - there is a 240v system on the boat that when plugged in to the marina works. there are several 240v plug sockets which are functional. - there are many light fittings that don't work. there are two sets and one of the sets of fittings say 24v on the side of the fitting (im not sure what to make of this) - there are four batteries and not three as mentioned before - there are also several party unexplained boxes, one of which is certainly a fuse box. link to photos: http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/anguswolf/library/?sort=3&page=1 many thanks and i look forward to what you guys make of my predicament! thanks again.
  8. Heres the image http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/anguswolf/media/photo_zpsf8d5ea1d.jpg.html?filters[user]=140379353&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=0
  9. I have one image of the batteries but im not sure how useful it will be. i could post more photos on saturday but i'm afraid not before. there is a switch stating 1, 2 or both. I am unsure if i am isloating the engine battery after running the engine. all i know is that the engine ran and i had the water pump working last week and that now the water pump does not work. file://localhost/Users/angus_wolf/Desktop/photo.jpg sorry i am struggling to send the photo. will try again
  10. Ok so currently i have the following. 2 leisure batteries and a starter battery the leisure batteries are dead although they worked last weekend but are now drained and i am not sure why i think it is because they are linked to the starter battery which they shouldn't be? the shower pump worked last week and is connected somehow. the bilge pump still works now. there is also an isolator switch. i have not seen any fuse or junction boxes. the boat is in chertsey, surrey
  11. Hello, There are various wires that lead to no here and are now redundant so i had planned to remove them all and start again.
  12. Hello, I am new to boating and have just bought my first narrowboat so sorry for my ignorance. I have done quite a lot of reading on the topic but am looking for some good online help or perhaps a link to a step by step guide to 12v electrics. Currently i have two leisure batteries and a starter battery. what do i connect to the engine for charging? Do i connect the batteries to each other....then..... My plan is to connect up around four 12v sockets and a 12v fridge in the boat from the leisure batteries. how is this done? thanks
