  1. Thanks everyone, we have got it sorted. It is the fridge, we have had someone look at it and the motor is well past its best, so it looks like a new fridge.
  2. Similar question to Jo's (july). We have a small fridge on our Viking river cruiser that is powered from a leisure battery that is either kept topped up via solar panel or alternator from outboard engine when we are cruising. However the fridge cuts out when the battery reaches 60%. Usually after about 6 hours. Is it the fridge or the battery? Or do we also need to look at wiring? We have only had boat 2 months so do not know how it performed for previous owners and do not know how old fridge or batteries are. There is nothing in the, very comprehensive, folder of invoices we received with the boat that indicate either have been replaced during the life span of the boat, which is approx 20 years old.
  3. We can tilt the engine, if only i knew what a shearpin was! The engine is being serviced before we go so will see what mechanic says. Plus i obviously need to brush up on the moon cycles. Beginning to think we might just do the L&L instead.
  4. Thanks, just ordered it.
  5. Hi, we are going to take our first trip on a tidal river next week. Selby to York (Naburn Lock). Does anyone have any tips? Do we need a radio & life jackets? And are there any book/leaflets that show the best course to take whilst on the river, i have seen one for the Thames but no other tidal waters (apart from the sea). We have a Viking Cruiser with a 35hp outboard engine so hopefully powerful enough.
  6. Hi everyone, Thanks (i think!) for you comments. Certainly didn't intend for anyone to fall out over my post. Just to clarify a few things: Yes, with hindsight, which is a wonderful thing, we should not have paid full amount up front. Yes we are moored at Stanley Ferry and before we bought the boat we certainly did our homework. We spent about 5 months researching and viewing boats, including talking to boaters (and them letting us see inside their pride and joys),but as this post proves, everyone has their opinion as to what is right. We also went to Crick and read articles on't web. Yes we had a GRP but wanted something bigger and with more power to get us onto the tidal rivers. We weighed up pros and cons of GRP v steel. Finally decided on another GRP but wanted inboard engine as we were fed up having to find petrol stations near enough to carry cans back to boat (and storing). After a lot of searching the boat at Cas seemed to fit the bill. Plus, there are lots of boatyards that also sell boats, we have visited a few, are you telling me they are all dodgy? I am sure there must be some questionable brokers as well. We now have another boat. So seriously skint now (should have called the boat this), so wave if you see us: Hurley Mist. Will let you all know what outcome is. By the way what does OP mean? old pensioner, old phull, old pisshead?
  7. Parted with £14000 cash on 1 October 2014 to buy a boat and pay for work doing to get her back in water i.e put engine back in, rebuild cockpit and interior. He said it would take about 4-5 week to do. 6 very stressful months later he finally agreed to give us our money back as he had done sweet FA with the boat apart from get the name painted on the hull. That was end of march. over last 2 months he has made promise after promise to give us our money but blames no work coming in so he hasn't the cash to give us. Refusing to speak to us now. Next stage is to take him to court so the confidence bit was just to reassure people i will not use their experiences as evidence, unless anyone want to join us in getting him to court.
  8. Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but here goes. Has anyone had any adverse dealing with Castleford Boatyard owned by Shane Jones, It was previously known as supreme marine which his brother Damion owned. I would be interested in hearing from you if you have been asked to pay money up front for work to be done or to buy a boat from them and then find that they drag their feet over getting the work done or even giving you the boat. Anything you tell me will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
  9. Thanks for comments, me thinks I now need a glass of wine! I thought this boating lark was going to be nice and relaxing. I know now that i know nothing about boat maintenance. How do you know how thick the GRP is? How do I know when i have reached the gel coat? Has the boat actually been painted and it is the paint that is cracked or is it the GRP? So many questions, not enough wine in the fridge!!!!!
  10. Hi, you have provided me with some good information about re-painting the anti slip walkway on my boat, which has worked a treat. Now another silly question from a newby. The top of my GPR boat has a few hair line cracks, nothing major just superficial, can i use a bit of T Wax scratch cover or paint restorer on them?
  11. Thanks for your help, have ordered the paint from link above and will try the sugar soap method.
  12. Apologies in advance, first time i have used the forum so forgive me if this has been asked before. We bought a boat on a whim end of last year and now addicted. The boat is GRP and has a narrow walkway around the edge that is looking a little tired, just a bit grubby realy but will not spruce up with a good wash. So i wondered can i just go over it with a coat of paint or do i really need to sand it all down? The existing finish is anti slip so already has the nobly bits. Plus does anyone know were i can buy 1/2 litre tin of paint as there is only a small area to do. Thanks in anticipation of your help.
