  1. Fill the dedicated stove tank as the 100% domestic rate. If you so have a diesel heater (Webasto etc) which can heat radiators and water, which is fed from the engine tank, then also take this into consideration when filling your tank ahead of winter. Boats with gas central and hot water heating can legitimately claim 60/40.
  2. Indeed, but it all adds to the complication, analogue meters rule for quick assimilation of information on a boat.
  3. In my opinion it would be much clearer if all mooring restricton signs said how many nights you were permitted to stay.
  4. Talking of 'orses, what happened to Mr Oss?
  5. 160 x 0.6 = 96 160 x .4 = 64 So 64 litres at £0.80 = £51.20 96 litres at £0.8 + £0.58 = £132.48 So £183.68 in total.
  6. Back in the 70's when charging telephone exchange batteries, the rectifiers (chargers) had manually adjustable output, adjusted every 15 minutes. We used to charge at a constant rate (C10 IIRC) until the cells began to gas freely, then at 2.67 volts per cell until the tail current was constantly for 3 x 30 minute measurements.
  7. I prefer to drink my beer out of a glass. I find a fridge full at a time tends to leave me comatose! ?
  8. Excellent photo's. Thanks for sharing. Saw many of the boats come past my mooring on the Coventry and met Badger at a bridgehole on a recent cruise.
  9. As I pointed out in post #11. Unless you require extremely precise readings (unlikely in a boat, car of flying thing) digital instruments have no advantage over analogue except for bling value.
  10. I find the best coping strategy for dealing with exceptionally hot weather in the UK is to retire to a shady pub. ?
  11. When i got DQ the hinged lid in the stern deck covering the weedhatch was very stiff and creaked. Fortunately, unlike the OP, the hinged allowed the lid to be taken off. Judicious use if the lump hammer (through a piece of wood) eventually got the lid off. I then applied Copperslip grease, which made opening the lid effortless and silent. This however raised an unexpected consequence. When the boat lists in the right (wrong?) direction, the lid slips off its hinges as you open it. I intend to rectify this by treating the hinge to years of neglect. ?
  12. You won't be able to get any contractor to give a fixed price quote on a job with so many potential issues. It is a 250 year old system built without any standardisation after after all. You would either have to give them the opportunity to investigate for the issues at your expense, or more likely get them to do it at cost plus a fixed percentage, after agreeing labour rates for the skills needed.

  14. No experience of water blasting, but CO2 blasting (beads of dry ice) works well as the beads melt and evaporate, leaving only the paint residue behind. No idea of cost though.

  16. Just seen a boat go past my mooring called Dick Terrapin ? Wouldn't really have noticed him (I was browsing the forum) but he used his bow thruster to navigate through the bridge on a straight bit of canal. This is the second time in less than a week I have seen using a bow thruster to navigate in a straight line ???. On Sunday as I was coming up the two Glascote Locks a replica Small Northwich was using his to steer between the two locks ???
  17. RIP Laurence. I never met you but have enjoyed many of your DVD's and posts on here.
  18. Indeed, we once bought two kittens which my wife names "Bubble" and "Squeak". They never got lost together, and I felt a right fool calling out into the night "Bubble, Bubble" or even worse "Squeak, Squeak" ?
  19. I find things pick me rather than the other way round ?
  20. Perhaps sirweste originates from the Fens? ?
  21. I have yet to find anything round a prop that bolt cutters, a hacksaw and a pruning knife haven't been able to get off (used singly or in combination).
  22. Yes the battery will not quite get fully charged during the winter and might begin to sulphate. However, as the charger will get the battery almost fully charged, I don't think that the sulphation would harden to the point of being irreversible, so a good equalisation charge in the spring would probably restore the majority of the lost capacity.
  23. The test emoji in the above posthe is yellow. Perhaps you are suffering from intermittent colour blindness? ?

  25. Easily resolved at most venues by charging for attendance rather than parking, but the Braunston show is at a very public location. Would charity collection boxes along the towpath raise more money?
