  1. Hi Janet,

The day was good, really hot could not have asked for better. Stopped at the pub called the coy carp which could not cope with the amount of people that was there, but our food was good, and so was the wine.

Boat is not so good...... the amount of comments we had about the smoke was quite embarrassing. We have been given some more ideas from various people at the locks we went through. Family conference tomorrow night as to what to do next! (it's a family boat)

We are hoping to moor for the summer around the Venetian Marina, Cholmondeston. Which is on the Shropshire Union Canal (Middlewich Branch) - that's if they sort the engine out in time!

    Mrs Panda

Pleased to see the boat not emitting the noxious fumes this weekend after surgery !!

Glad I could point you in the right direction

    :)

  2. Hi can anyone recommend a good Dayboat to hire for a day. i have hired near Chirk a few times , but might change this year.

    Thanks Colin

If you are "Down South" Denham Day Boats ( Denham Deep Lock Grand Union Canal Lock 87) 01895 271070

have a nice dayboat for hire

  3. can you believe it, just as im singing the praises of my nifty old fixed bike with its bontrager invincible tyres than someone, some thieving scummy bugger has nicked it off the roof of my boat late at night while iwas in bed.

its quite distinctive, or it was..

so if anyone happens to be around the GU Cowley area and sees an old thin metal racing bike frame ( made by jeff bird in the 1960's), possibly still painted dark blue at the back blended to metallic turqoise at the front, with old fashioned sweeping forks, cow horn handle bars with one shimano brake on the front, fixed wheel at the back on a campag large flange hub, mavic rims ( from the 80's), shimano spd pedals, a grey racing saddle, a twin under saddle bottle holder and an orange bell with flowers on it.

please let me know and I will be around there will my rolling pin to batter said scummy buggers knees in.

actually, id just like it back so if anyone knows of a bike fitting this description propped up in a hedge or ina skip...

im not fussed where its found, its kind sentimental.

we even tried searchng the canal bed in case the perpetrator threw it in the water after discovering how hard it is to ride.

Hiya HR I will have a good look on my way home later.. ( Swan and Bottle to Denham Deep)

    Baldock

  4. And if you are still confused 'Baldock' is on the left right

Sometimes even I have to work out who is who in the pics

Mrs B on the left hand rear of pics and Cara ( nee Baggage) is the well fed one !

The dog still has a complex about being seen with me in daylight !! lol

    :D

  5. Well what a lovely afternoon for a banter and what a lovely banter it was!

Wonderful opportunity to put yet more faces (and real names) to the characters who hide behind funny psuedonims I feel I know so well.

I can report that if Moley has too many people boarding his boat at once his drawers fall down!

I can also report that Moley was heard on the phone to Mrs Mole saying he would be 'down there to tie her up in a minute'

Sorry Moley but you forgot to pay the bribe to keep me quiet!

Ahhhhh....... what a perfect way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon in the company of good like minded friends!

Here's to more Banters! and here's to really great friends :(B)

Twas indeed a good banter, and I can confirm the Moley offered to tie Mrs Mole up ..but she was stuck on a ledge ?? the mind boggles.

Mrs B spotted a tall and short person cycling into the pub car park and exclaimed that looks like a mole and molette ( she was correct) something about a loose belt delayed him ...

Thanks all who came and made it a brilliant Saturday afternoon although a long drive for a pint , natter and nosh

Cheshire Rose has an invite to come Baldock boating ( anybody got a butty I can borrow to put her stillitoes in )

    Cheers one and all

    Baldock and Mrs B ;)

  6. Yep, I'll be up for this, prefer Wheaton Aston as we are actually going the other way at easter (From Norbury), but dont mind either really.

Just say what time and where and I'll stick my head in and say hello for a couple of hours or so.

Fairly good chance Mrs B and I will make it Moley, got to sort out something for Sat night first but if that pans then we will come up for the banter ( Ok and the beer I owe you)

  7. Why is it over?

Chris Coghlan felt that the Old working boatmen who were still around are now not able to participate in the run , this was the reason I have heard ( please correct me if I am wrong )

I did hear a rumour that NBOC may take the mantle up next year BUT i am not sure??

We would have liked to taken Baldock ( even with the full length cabin) but as always time/work got in the way

  8. I have a lockgate 'upright silver cylinder' stove - generally it runs very well. Last week it went absolutely mental; I lit it, after a couple of failed attempts and left it on setting one. Then working through a lock I could hear a strange poping noise from the boat. The kids appeared at the hatch shouting that the stove was on fire. I darted inside and found the stove so full of roaring orange flame that the hotplate lid at the top was being blown open by the flames (that was the poping noise)! - I cut the fuel supply and eventually the inferno died. I have not been back to the boat to investigate what went wrong yet but the knob was still on setting one (low). Any thoughts?

We have had this situation a coiple of times with our Diesel stove, you probably have got a slightly Larger than usual puddle of fuel in the burner pan , when this has caught light it has gone into an "overheat" situation

The popping could have been caused by the fire trying to draw more and more oxygen in to feed the flames.

All you can do is turn it off LET IT COOL THROUGHLY check the fuel inlet area for carbon and relight

  9. Message loud and clear, I'll go away and won't bother trying to offer a different perspective or simply help with something in the future.

Good luck with your campaigning, boating or whatever makes you happy.

    Eugene

Eugene, please don't fall into the trap of thinking the loudest speak for the majority. I, for one, always value your input.

    Regards

    David Bridle

Totally agree David, at the end of the day any differences people have with BW etc are VERY secondary to the larger picture

I also appreciate the input Eugene puts in to this newsgroup if only for a perspective of "the other side of the fence"

Cuiusvis hominis est errare; nullius nisi insipientis in errore perseverare

(Any man can make a mistake; only a fool keeps making the same one)

So much truth in that Moley !!

    :mellow::D:D

Mind you I suppose when I saw the state she was in , bursting into fits of laughter was probably NOT the correct thing to do at the time....opps

  11. Yup...fell in  not in the normal albeit embarrassing unpainful way. No no! I decided that I would slip while taking the gas tank off the boat. Managed to generally bash and scrape the skin off right left leg as it plummeted to its watery doom AND land on my left knee and groin on the jetty.

Its a good job the tank wasn't full!

I can't really walk now  AND I've got a wet foot!

Look on the good side...at least you didn't have a bucket and chuckit in your hands ... ( Like one of my ex wives did once !!!!!.. I had to hose her down on the towpath before I would let her in the boat !

    (Now with a pump out ! )

  12. What is the point of a protest by canal boats on the canals? Nobody apart from some boaters themselves is going to be inconvenienced and few outside the boating community will give a damn. All we would be doing is making the point to ourselves.

The purpose of a protest must be to bring the subject to the attention of those outside the affected community, those in control of the matter about which the protest is being made. Otherwise no effective protest occurs. Those in control in this case are certain politicians.

For example to block the Thames in central London with a load of narrowboats, if that were possible given the tides etc., would be an effective protest. It would inconvenience other river traffic and is likely to attract the attention of the media, an important consideration because getting publicity for the cause is a large part of the battle. Something along those lines is the kind of action needed.

Gathering at a few canal spots round the country is not going to make our point with any impact. We have to make an impression on the public and politicians outside the boating community to do that, requiring something with bigger clout than a canal gathering.

    rgards

The point Steve is that with enough people gathering around the country on the same day, with local MP's , the press etc etc in attendance WE WILL gain maximum publicity for what is probably one of the most important causes if you care at all for the Canals

I personally feel that trying to blockade the Thames is not only a no go to start with but also highly dangerous but having localised protest in key locations will get the message over far better

  13. You can cruise for days around the BCN without seeing another moving boat - even in summer!

    Tony

One day all the boats in all the marinas will all decide to go boating at the same time !!!!

    Arghhhhhhhh

....... mind you how many will be licenced I wonder

  14. Chris,

I'm not sure any of the older photos I have are of Baldock - I'm pretty certain what I've posted here is Bletchley, (but not absolutely certain).

I would love to see some of her now though, if you have them.

    Alan.

    Alan'

  15. Coleshill & Virginis are still at Foxton if you're interested, my dad saw last night when taking Cragdale back there :P

What is it you want to know? My brother is at Foxton at the moment so can ask Tony if you want any info

Thanks , I spoke to Tony the other week about Baldock ( I know him through the Day job )

he said he would try to look some photos up for us

What I am looking for was anyone who had photos in their own collection of Baldock either in working trim or converted

we are trying to build up a history of the boat

    Many thanks

    Chris B

  16. Yes...........................................................................it is to catch the licence dodgers.

As the BW patrol boat was going up the GU Cowley section the "dossers" were all one lock ahead going North !!

Once they had stopped for the evening most returned to "Their Moorings " :P
