I completed a run up to the Rochdale summit and return from Mirfield around this time last year and had trouble with this section. I scraped along the bottom between locks 7 & 8. It definitely needs dredging after the prolonged leakage from lock 8 which seems to have filled this section with silt. I know this is not the current water level problem here, but Enigmatic's comment of Pennine Canal Roulette certainly describes using the waterways in this area very well.

I have seen the recent discussions regarding previous owners of White Heather, your son being one of those owners. The last owner provided a lot of history and documentation which was much appreciated.

Only just returned to this thread and noticed the comments and old photos of Progress. I knew some of its history and when i spotted it on the GU and I managed to get a picture of the stern. That was in 1972! A bit blurred I am afraid, but the colours are still correct. My goodness, nearly half a century ago.

I have another photo of the same butty which shows more of the grey and orange paintwork. This was Foxton Boat Services livery and my photo has "Virginis and another butty" recorded on it.

I saw this procedure carried out by Jack Monk on Bletchley many years ago when a mattress got round the prop and stopped the engine dead. He did seem to go about it in a very matter of fact way, probably done it a few times. The stern was securely tied off around the lock gate centre posts, not too much water out and then he stood on the cill. It did involve some climbing up and down the gate. As we had to bow haul the boat it was lucky it happened within reach of a lock going down.
